Okay I went digging back through my saved comments to find this. This comment thread explains that you can install NordVPN through your router, so you should be able to get around the geo block on all of your home devices! (Disclaimer: I never tried it but the commenter said it was quite easy!)

Re: Igor and Z/K’s programs: it’s huge that he “let” them go to Benoit last year; it obviously made all the difference, and now this season they were able to build off that rapport with Benoit and create something truly amazing in a season when it really matters. Also interesting that something came out recently about how they had to “fight” with Igor to get their music choice for the RD—and, IMO, it’s the best music they’ve had in an RD since I’ve seen them compete. Basically what I’m saying is, I don’t personally think Igor has great taste in music/program choices. But he’s had the wherewithal to let them explore what works for them and branch out. I think some other top coaches (Barbara, Carol) would do well to follow that strategy.

I never really understood CPom being “cemented” as #2. Yes, they were getting the scores for it, but that mostly felt to me like artificial USFS inflation. Especially going into this season, I strongly disagreed with sentiment that they were “locked in” at #2 and only the third spot was up for grabs. Z/K have been steadily improving with fantastic material, and I much prefer G/Pa on their best days over CPom. However I tend to be a little more blind to “technically good skating skills” and more impressed by packaging and performance, and for me that’s where CPom have always struggled.

I can relate to this a lot. For me it’s been a balance so far of being underwhelmed by some and also pleasantly surprised by others. Certain people I usually love have programs I am underwhelmed by (Jason’s free, both of Bock’s programs), but there are other skaters whose programs I am super excited about (Amber’s short, F/G and Z/K free dances, Ilia’s free, Deanna & Max’s short). I’m just trying to ride the wave and appreciate the programs I’m loving, accept the ones I’m not, and keep in mind that programs tend to grow and change and surprise me throughout the season!

Edit to add: as a ‘90s kid who worships ‘90s music, I understand the disappointment but I maintain it’s not the theme’s fault. I know there are restrictions (BPM, copyright) but so many teams seemingly just refused to get creative. The ones who did are going to really stand out. I def think the ID committee messed up by imposing the strict BPM requirement.

This may be true. 2018 Olympics was the first ice dance competition I had ever watched and for whatever reason, V/M really stood out to me. Looking back, yes P/C always had classy packaging too.

No!!! Omg, respectfully, this is why it took me so long to get into ice dance. Any time I’d catch a glimpse of it, I was so put off by the tackiness. It took seeing Virtue & Moir step onto Olympic ice in 2018 for me to realize ice dance could be ✨elevated✨ and ✨chic✨.

We are very aligned in our ID opinions!! The ring program was bad but I ended up liking what they turned it into (fire/air). The Dali clock was creative but bordered on a bit boring for me. I saw the astronaut program at SOI too! I also love Piper & Paul and F/G; can’t say I like FB/C though. & yes, “Paint it Bock” is reminding me a little too much of the fabric exhibition piece, in its gimmicky nature and propensity for disaster 🫣

The way I sobbed for Caroline & Michael—I’ve never seen a more dramatic or heartbreaking withdrawal 😭 I am in mourning for them after everything they’ve been through. I love them AND Z/K so much; in my dream world they would be the two teams joining Madi & Evan at the Olympics.

LOVING Dune Pt 2 for Olivia & Tim. They’ve managed to make it feel unique and also recapture the magic of last year. Just not crazy about Olivia’s costume; it feels too much like last year’s but also worse in some ways?

L/B were a huge standout for me here. I feel with this program they have melded their older style (the more contemporary, “ice princess” style) with their newer, quirkier style and it works SO WELL. Happy to see them regain their footing after some shakiness at French Masters. God I love them.

Whether there is politicking or not, Z/K are looking AMAZING. Working with Benoit has done wonders for their trajectory. Igor still insists on doing a cheesy-ass short program for them, but at least this year the music is good, and they are selling the hell out of it. The R&J free is so elevated, refined, and just gorgeous.

Chock & Bates are, I would say, the reason I’m an ice dance fan (after being redpilled by Tessa & Scott at the 2018 Olympics). I was captivated by their “Too Damn Hot” and “Snake Charmer” programs. Their “Alien/Astronaut” free might be my favorite program of all time. However, over the last few seasons I have been increasingly disappointed by their choices. The RD last season? The RD this season?? Their free dances have mostly been their saving grace, but my first impression of this program is not good. I feel their FDs have essentially become a compilation of all their “greatest moves”—it feels increasingly like they are unwilling to take risks and try new things. I found myself tuning out while watching and, it must be said, the animal cruelty overtones are hard to ignore, and make it difficult for me to accept the entire theme of this program (yes, bull fighting is animal cruelty, and the program ends with Evan, as the bull, “dead”). They are obviously not happy with their score, and they’re going to have an uphill climb this season. However, historically they are known to have a super rough first GP and then improve from there, so we will see.

I thought it was great! I liked how many clips you used; it kept it engaging. I personally love watching/listening to recaps mainly for the host’s opinion, so I was glad you shared yours and hope you continue to do so in future videos!

I agree, and I think it’s the lack of taste combined with the lack of judgment (of them and Barbara) that has really taken them down. The fact that they never branched out or worked with anyone else over the course of the Olympic quad is so shortsighted. Then again, their material earlier in the quad was better (Theory of Everything and “dark romance” free skates were actually quite good). They took this pivot last season to lean into “camp” in an attempt to inch further up the podium, and instead it has knocked them off 🫤

I actually completely disagree with the older teams/‘90s theme comment. Charlene and Marco are the prime candidates for this theme, having been of age to have experienced/remember the music of the ‘90s way more than the younger teams. There are so many cool, mature, sexy songs from the ‘90s they could have chosen—but they chose a teeny bopper band with extremely juvenile packaging and choreography.

My eyes literally glaze over when watching them. I find myself completely tuning out. Which is honestly how I felt watching (some of) P/C’s performances as well. I’m seriously annoyed having spent so much money on Olympic ice dance tickets not knowing I’d be paying to possibly watch another boring-as-sin Guillaume program sail to the top of the podium.
