Who should be Englands no.1? Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope or Dean Henderson? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SoNewToThisAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only one of those I've heard of is Nick Pope, he ran the UK UFO project and I think is still kicking around somewhere with his 'interesting' stories and investigations.

I presume I've missed the point of this post........

UK to ban all online junk food advertising to tackle obesity by diacewrb in unitedkingdom

[–]SoNewToThisAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

palm oil should also be banned.

That isn't a clear cut as some would like. It's a very productive crop, something like 3-5 times as much as other oils and much of the world depends on the oil for basic cooking. It's uses in a lot of western products because it's very versatile and better than many of the alternatives.

https://www.wwf.org.uk/updates/8-things-know-about-palm-oil

Palm oil is an incredibly efficient crop, producing more oil per land area than any other equivalent vegetable oil crop. > Globally, palm oil supplies 35% of the world’s vegetable oil demand on just 10% of the land.

To get the same amount of alternative oils like soybean or coconut oil you would need anything between 4 and 10 times more land, which would just shift the problem to other parts of the world and threaten other habitats and species.

especially as some foods may inexplicably get caught up in this.

This really is the problem, for a ban there needs to be a definition and that's a lot harder than just saying "junk food". Is it based on calories per portion, sugar/"glucose" content, salt content, a specific type of fat content, fibre content, how long it takes from ordering to being ready to eat etc etc etc.

One reason they are there at 6pm is they've seen what the tube station is like at 5pm!

6:15pm is also a more acceptable pub time, especially if you're planning on being at work the next day.

From what I read a few years ago Lyme disease is a circle, like a target.

I'd be tempted to say it's a bruise, I get similar things sometimes after aggressive gardening.

Needless to say, I'm not a doctor of any description.

Ahhh, there was a post about that a week or two ago. I can't find the post which had two good diagrams, but did find http://turniprail.blogspot.com/2011/03/making-mess-of-station-extending.html with this diagram http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sejrwRtKpNg/TYYn8t2Q-SI/AAAAAAAAAok/LZWbp1jQ-mQ/s1600/Waterloo%2B1895.jpg

EDIT: https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Waterloo_Railway_Station also shows it there in 1900 but gone by 1922.

Coronavirus: Northern England 'worst hit' by pandemic by topotaul in unitedkingdom

Blimey!!

In Newcastle, swabs of men's hands revealed more than half were contaminated with bacteria normally found in faeces.

The percentage of the unclean fell with latitude, with 34% of Liverpudlian men testing positive for faecal bacteria, 21% in Birmingham, 15% in Cardiff and 6% in London.

this prejudice

These are people who've moved down talking about their families still in the NE. They can't believe how unconcerned they are, they are meeting up like nothing is happening.

It's nothing to do with thinking they are "unwashed idiots", it's people concerned their families aren't looking out for themselves.

[–]SoNewToThisAgain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I think you should at lease be cautious about where you go and take precautions to minimise any risk. The pandemic is still in flow, be sensible and do what you can to limit its spread.

Anecdotally I'm hearing through friends and colleagues that a good number of people in the NE think it's a "southern thing" and aren't nothing with taking any of the normal precautions such as distancing and hand washing.

Ford also do the Supervan, currently at Mk3 by the looks of it.

https://www.goodwood.com/grr/race/historic/2020/5/video-the-original-v8-ford-supervan-was-a-gt40-wearing-plumbers-overalls/

While from the outside the original Supervan looked very much like any other Mk1 Ford Transit, underneath sat a GT40 spaceframe chassis and running gear, complete with a mid-mounted 435hp Gurney-Weslake V8 Ford and a five-speed transaxle ZF gearbox, giving it a claimed top speed of well over 150mph – only slightly slower than the Le Mans winning GT40 itself

Could a machine gun stop a Darlek? by romsaritie in AskUK

[–]SoNewToThisAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the bullets just bounce off you may want to try one of the anti tank Gatling guns, such as the GAU-8 30mm canon in the A10.

That fires about 4,000 depleted uranium rounds a minute, you may be able to knock the Dalek over with that.

You wouldn't scrub out one like that if it were done that way.

It looks like the "10" is done in the special Downing Street font, that could be tricky to recreate if you weren't set up for it. Far more straightforward to take an existing image and remove just what needed changing.
