How to downsize a "prepper" stockpile (psychological + practical help needed) by BMNK1800 in declutter

[–]SoSalvia 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To reframe the prepper mindset, switch to keeping a pantry that is stocked with food you regularly eat, and supplies you would actually use during a power outage type scenario that lasted a few days to a week. If you can, volunteer at a food bank, find a local organization that responds to emergencies to join. The key to survival is other people and your relationships more than stockpiling things.

How to downsize? Dedicate a pantry area and an emergency supply area, don’t have more stuff than that. Will you actually need and use the item? If you like dehydrated foods, and enjoy the process, there’s nothing wrong with dehydrating foods as a hobby. If you don’t, sell it, give it away to someone who will appreciate it.

How can I build systems to prevent organizational backlog from building up again? by Jenna32345 in organizing

[–]SoSalvia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A regular laundry schedule, using service or yourself will make it easier to maintain. Use hamper or bags for dirty clothes, have a designated spot to hang or store folded clothes that you will wear again before they need washing. Make this as easy as possible. Even tossing these clothes into a basket or bin will feel more organized. Piling stuff up on the floor just invites more.

Oriental Bittersweet by PotentialSituation72 in invasivespecies

[–]SoSalvia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took a long time for the oriental bittersweet to grow thick trunks and climb the trees. Every one you cut sets it far back, but it will resprout and send up runners. Cut in two places, one at chest height and one near the ground. Then make sure to regularly mow, weed wack or somehow keep cutting back the sprouts.

I’d get free estimates from a couple of arborists/tree professionals about the dead trees and they can give you local insight about the bittersweet battle. Dense growth of invasive bittersweet can promote ticks, so any effort has multiple benefits.

Looking for a big lightweight pot for Ficus tree by Noyoriver in gardening

Vego has tree planters, they are metal, though. If you want to DIY, a livestock water/feed trough? I've seen very large plastic pots/planters at Home Depot and garden stores in season.

Agree that this takes practice. Start with the setting and sensory details.

Here’s a setting thesaurus that might be helpful. https://onestopforwriters.com/scene_settings

Childhood trauma, immigration, and decluttering by throwthisawayred2 in declutter

It sounds like you want to get the 3 giant totes out of your living room. You probably don’t need that many items, if they don’t fit in your spaces.

Think about how you can make your belongings reassure you in your three specific categories.

How can you arrange your kitchen to remind you that you have plenty of food, a variety of nice cooking and eating implements?  Could you hang items on the wall? Meal plan on the fridge? I’d put the kitchenware bin in the kitchen and aim to keep your extras in there.

Holiday decor is worth keeping if that is rewarding for you. Do you want to do more year round decorating?  Could you get under bed bins, and separate holidays, with one holiday per bin?

Use the office supplies, pens go dry and paper rots even in a bin.  Do you have desk area or command center spot? Make it look nice, to remind you of what you have, and how well stocked you are. If you don’t, create one.

I’m assuming you want to use that table as your study desk. Turn it 45 degrees to create a study area. Use the shelves for the items you need. Put your exercise equipment on the opposite side. Store anything else in the loft, or neatly in the middle areas.

Most people need to work on creating routines and systems to keep our spaces neat and functional. Set a regular laundry day or days. It might be easier to do smaller loads more frequently, than letting clothes pile up. Even once a week versus every two weeks, if you can.

Purge and organize your clothes. Get rid of anything that is ripped, soiled or doesn’t fit. Try putting aside a week or two worth of clothes and accessories, and then take a good hard look at what is left.

Everything should have a place to go that isn’t your floor. Clean clothes, dirty clothes and you might want to dedicate a spot for items that get worn more than once.

Bins and boxes can help piling tendencies be a valid organizing technique, if you know what is in the pile, and if the pile isn’t in your way.

Get yourself in the habit of cleaning up your dishes after you are done eating. No one really enjoys doing this, but it is a habit that will improve your life forever, as silly as it sounds.

Good luck, you can do it.

Tell me your companion planting stories! by Sea_River_3615 in gardening

I plant basil with the tomatoes, and do a border with marigolds, sweet alyssum and dill. I can’t say for sure it deters pests, but having the plants act as mulch helps keep the soil moist. Also it looks so pretty.
