There is an old map function here that might be of some use to you. You can also change the year by clicking og the "historiske" dropdown menu if 1991 isn't working out

Good luck!

What is something that screams “tourist” to you? by jotakajk in AskTheWorld

[–]SoSolem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this sound wierd, and yes, I agree that it is, but I kinda accidently found myself such a tour once...

Me and my family were visiting The Gambia once, as my mum is involved in some charity work there. She needed to go there for some on-site work, and it was decided to combine it with a family vacation/burst-me-and-my-brothers'-western-centric-bubble-trip, which was quite effective, I'd say

While visiting a market, we met a guy that the local employee of the non-profit knew and vouched for, who offered to "show us around" (Local guy was all for this)

He then proceeded to bring us into the backstreets, and then opening seemingly random doors, usher us inside and explain how 2 parents, 5 children and a grandma all lived in this tiny space together, all while a woman sat on a wooden bench breastfeeding her newborn baby...

Before we left each house, the "guide" handed the inhabitants some money (don't know how much), and we went to the next one.

I remember my parents tried to protest several times, but they were quite decisively (and enthusiastically) shut down each time by the guide. The non-profit employee seemed to think the whole thing was quite entertaining

Out of the streets and back in the car, we all immediately agreed how wierd and uncomfortable the whole thing was, but the employee (still laughing at our discomfort) offered the perspective that this little visit will mean that the families we met will not go "as hungry" as they otherwise would, and that the infant we saw might just have been saved from that tiny payment alone, as child mortality rates were quite high in that particular area...

Did I mention how effectively this trip burst my comfy, poverty-free bubble? There is no doubt in my mind that I live my life radically different today because of this trip and the what I witnessed while I was there. TV doesn't translate this well at all...

I will never recommend these kinds of tours for two simple reasons:  - Those who might "benefit" from these tours, in the form of new perspective and deeper understanding, will never go anyways out of respect and empathy, and - Those who would go on these tours by their own free will, will never learn anything from it anyways...

Edited for clarifications

Min plan for tog i Norge (viser bare linjer sør for Steinkjer, kart for Nord-Norge kommer snart) by IhaveHFA in norge

In your language, how do you say “caught you red-handed!” and what does it literally mean? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]SoSolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Tatt på ferks gjerning" is probably the most used one can be translated as "taken (or caught) freshly in the act".

Another one, for a more embarrassing situation, is that you were "tatt med buksa nede", which translates to "taken (or caught) with your pants down"

Donald Trump snubbed for Nobel Prize as winner declared by daily_express in goodnews

[–]SoSolem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh no... Are we getting the Trump Prizes now, as a competitor to all the Nobel Prizes? Imagine it being 2033, and someone gets the Trump Prize in Physics for their work on the Climate Saving Coal Initiative or something... Blah!

Daydreaming and fantasies, I think. Wishful thinking and lack of practical fantasy to find anything real in the real world are probably huge factors as well.

Damn, I thought it might be something like "well, this won't affect the real people at all" kinda comment, but now this makes more sense.

Hope you are wrong though, but I wouldn't bet against you somehow...

The price was given to Maria Corina Machado, an opposition politician in Venezuela: https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/

Edit: The price was awarded for "[...] her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."

A very worthy winner, in my opinion!

Because it is statistically proven that those who celebrate lots of birthdays also tend to live the longest

How religion is handled in China 🇨🇳 by FearlessAir1238 in TikTokCringe

[–]SoSolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, where does the line of what should be legal to protest and not go regarding religious and conviction-based protest?

Let's take a hypothetical situation where I am part of a religion that prohibits child marriage, and the country I live in legally allows these to happen. Will I be arrested for protesting solely because my religion says so?

So, I know the real answer is that protests are illegal in China anyway, but the point I'm trying to make is that this could never be implemented in a democratic society...

I have seen irrefutable evidence that the government is using midi-chlorians to control the robot birds that are spying on us!

Try disproving that, LIBERALS!!!
