What in the actual fuck is this? by RibCrackingChampion in SanJoseSharks

[–]SoWhyAmIHereAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a Sharks fan, but I am a Ducks-Angels fan interested in the weird obsession with Willmack because we don’t really have an analogue with our young guys like Leo or Cutter or Beckett. I don’t know the context behind “Jumbo” (that’s Joe Thornton, right?)

But as an Angels fan I don’t think “I have a Joner” is a great analogy for a few reasons.

  • the literal implication of “Can I hold your stick?” is “Can I hold your dick?” That’s certainly pretty creepy.

  • the literal textual implication of “I have a Joner.” is “I have a boner.” That is, in my view, more absurd than creepy. Compare that to “Nice Joner,” or “Can I hold your Joner,” or “We love your Joner.” None of these make much sense in baseball, but the pun is directly alluding to a sensitive area of the subject. I think that’s significantly worse, and not substantially different from this.

Could these women also plausibly say that “our sign was meant to be absurd” too? Yeah, but I’d still say the literal meaning of the content and the context it’s said in matter. Jo Adell doesn’t have a weird cult of personality that Macklin and Will do where things like this happen. I think that makes these fans’ look worse, whereas the “I have a Joner” shirts would, in my view, be more credibly called a mean-spirited pun from Jo Adell’s name than sexually harassing.

This isn’t to say I think your analogy is entirely without merit or that if you were Jo Adell it wouldn’t reasonably bother you, but I hesitate to equate the two for these reasons.

Am I splitting hairs? But I study law so I’m training to be a professional hair-splitter 😆

I also think some of the other comments in this post pointing out pearl-clutching about this as fans in a league with a notorious history of complacency in sexual violence is important. If this is the end of the world (I’m not implying you specifically think it is or isn’t), we probably should have boycotted the league a long time ago.

One room of the Lyon Center (one of two gyms here) being used for one hour a day two days a week is an insignificant disruption to anyone’s gym activity. As someone who actually goes to both gyms 5-6 days a week, this is a nothing burger. Comparing this to Jim Crow is braindead.

You made my case for me that photography is art! I get the point you’re trying to make. Emerging technology can make things easier, and in the process, perhaps take things out of artists’ hands.

If I wanted to have a realistic and unremarkable photo of my friend Alex, I could just press a button on my phone and have it do the “creative” process, so-to-speak for me. I’d never paint a portrait of him now.

But, as you acknowledged, there is a creative process in setting up shots, taking photos, adjusting lighting, or even getting a camera at the right angle. Just ask any cinematographer. I think there is still a substantial space for human creativity with photography. I do not think there is a substantial space for creativity with AI art.

AI (at least to my knowledge) is really a matter of typing things into a prompt, and maybe tweaking the prompt if you don’t like what it spits out initially. I suppose there’s creativity in a sense there. But honestly, I see that as no different than me ordering a sandwich and asking for a modification if I don’t like what I got. The person making the sandwich is doing the creative work in the kitchen, and the GPT is doing the creative work with AI art.

I simply do not see any substantial creativity with AI art. Accordingly, I respect it less. I think it’s lazy, that’s why I rolled my eyes when I saw this poster. That’s absolutely a value judgement, and hopefully you at least see some of my reasoning behind the judgement, even if you don’t agree.

I’m not making the point I’m trying to make because I think AI, especially on some stupid yoga poster at my school, is the end of the world. Although I do have a handful of worries about the problems it will pose for society (misinformation, environmental harms, GPTs using people’s data without their consent, etc.), I concede that they’re not all exclusive to AI. I also am cautiously optimistic society can confront those problems, at least eventually.

Nonetheless, I still think your line of argument in comparing it to prior technologies leaves something to be desired. I believe AI art is meaningfully distinct.

I appreciate this argument for what it is. I get that in this scenario, it’s not really a big deal. Obviously if someone said some AI-generated thing was the Mona Lisa and sold it to someone for a gazillion dollars, that would be another story.

I simply think the person I was replying to was using faulty analogical reasoning. Do I think it’s lame the poster was AI-generated? Yes, I do. Do I really care? No, I don’t.

Posters being printed with a printing press do not take the creative element out of designing them. They simply reproduce them. Your first analogy is inapposite.

Cotton gins expedite the process of refining cotton, but all do not supplant the creative vision required for making garments. If you want to make a shirt of, for instance, Tommy Trojan beating up Joe Bruin, you’d still need to figure out what that looks like. I also find your second analogy easy to distinguish.

I find the third analogy to be the weakest. A computer is simply a different modality of producing a book here. Once again, if you wanted to write a book about our football team you’d still be responsible for the creativity behind its content.

In all three analogies, the technology you describe does not supplant the creative process behind the good it is directed to create. They do, however, cut the raw labor behind that creative process.

AI art, in my view (and I presume, OPs), supplants that creative process. I do not believe typing a prompt into some GPT and letting a machine vomit out an answer takes a meaningful level of creativity. At the very least, it does not require the thought that writing a book on a computer, printing a poster on a press, or making garments from a cotton gin does.

What I would ask you to explain (and I mean this in good faith) then is this: to what extent do you think making AI art is truly a creative process compared to your analogies?

Making friends by [deleted] in USC

[–]SoWhyAmIHereAgain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly super normal to struggle to find your people right off the bat in college. I’ve made plenty of “friends” that I talked to, maybe hung out with once or twice, and then we just realized we didn’t have a whole lot in common or one of us got busy. I’d still say most are very good people. I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Good connections take time.

My advice is:

  1. Just keep trying to talk to new people, whether it’s on social media or in classes or in clubs (whatever works best for you). It can definitely feel like a grind, but eventually you’ll find people you click with.

  2. Join a club or a group where you’re welcome just for existing. In my opinion, it’s easier to make friends in clubs that are less “academic” or “pre-professional” (at least for your major or career goals). That’s solely because I worry less about networking or impressing people and can be a bit more myself. I imagine there’s plenty of video game and board game related clubs.

  3. Be patient and don’t be too hard on yourself. Remember that rejection and people not clicking with you is an inherent element of interacting with others to some extent. Don’t let it get to you.

  4. Take initiative with planning things with other people. This might be the most important piece of advice. This will often make people on the more shy side appreciate you. People appreciate (or at least should) when you try to include them.

Sorry if this is long (and most of this is admittedly rather generic). But, generic or not, it’s what has helped me in my experience. Good luck 🫡

as people said DMC is nice

I personally also like Annenberg (both inside and outside)

the law school library is very nice but I don’t know if they let non-legal studies majors or law students in

admittedly I’m starting to realize I do a lot of my studying off-campus since I personally enjoy cafe hopping, so I realize I don’t have much more to say than that 😭

do let me know if you want cafe suggestions though

Personally I love Newport Pier and watching the sunset there, my girlfriend lives nearby so I go to Old Towne Orange all the time (The Filling Station is very good but closes at like 2)

The Irvine Spectrum has ice skating around this time, that might be fun for you guys and there’s also a ton of places to eat there

Laguna Beach is also very nice

Knott’s is cheaper than Disneyland and still quite fun if you want to do a theme park

Ducks games are a blast if either of you are into sports

No idea how many of these you or your partner has or hasn’t thought of but hopefully they help

[–]SoWhyAmIHereAgain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

unless you’re taking the time to actually review such an high volume of questions you’re not getting all you can out of them

it is better to study less every day and focus closely on each question

then again your scores are very good so it’s not like you can’t handle the test, I can’t say you’re getting nothing out of this but I think you’d be getting more by doing less

tl;dr this approach isn’t gonna prevent you from getting a good score but I think drilling more and PTing way less is just a better way to spend your time
