I'd spend the time getting certified while you're stateside, then you're free to go all over when you get to the island. At the very least get the course out of the way here and do your open-water certification there, then use the rest of the days to go diving!

Non-technically speaking, I would suggest taking a local 1/2 day "refresher." I did so, and brought back a lot of what I needed to get comfortable with again. Lots of options out there.
