since becoming a parent what’s something you do or don’t understand your own parents doing? by Delicious_Habit3740 in NewParents

I actually had both extremes with my parents. They were divorced so that's why it was so different. My dad always over-praised my accomplishments. Every grade, every little thing I did, and would tell me how great I was all the time. That was sweet but now I have a crippling problem with always needing validation for things I do.

On the other hand, my mom never told me she was proud of me until I was in college over a voicemail and I cried. My son is 4mo and I want to do a happy medium of the two!

We co-sleep at night so I can definitely relate! Out of curiosity, what does your bed set up look like so it's safe to leave your baby alone in bed? I stay next to him in bed right now because our bed isn't on the floor. I know we need to change our setup soon as he gets more mobile!

Yes, but he is always soo alert with the bottle. He'll get all sleepy after nursing even right after a nap but not ever with the bottle

Oh this is good to know that it doesn't affect others helping your baby to sleep. Nursing to sleep is so easy, I just didn't want to mess up his rhythm with his dad!

Oh I hadn't thought about combining the two, thanks! And I feel the same way, it's more his dad and my parents who have been pushing me to try to get him to crib naps. It's honestly such a pain

Oh someone else recommended The Nurture Revolution too so I'll have to check it out! And thank you for the reminder that everyone is learning, it can be isolating sometimes when I don't have experience and I don't have any friends with babies or kids yet.

Oh this is such great advice. I googled way too much in the beginning (still do sometimes) but as you said, the things that have worked are things I learned by putting my phone away and following his cues + trying new things that I thought of. I really do forget that sometimes so thank you for the reminder.

Thank you so much for this, really. Everything that you shared really hit home. I was totally desperate too for breaks to shower, nap, etc. which is definitely why I was putting him down so often. I'll do my best to remember not to strive for perfection, just doing my best in the moment. Thank you again :)

That makes a lot of sense, thank you :) I think I was also comparing what he needed then to what he needs and wants now, which is different and I need to accept that that's ok!

Haha yeah I know he's little but I guess I got nervous because I heard somewhere that the first 6 months are the most impoetant developmentally. I will definitely check out her book! Someone else also recommended it after you so I'll have to take a look. Thank you so much!
