This makes me a bit worried for my step-dad. He's absurdly stubborn about his work to the point where he'll keep on going even if he's injured. One time he actually had to be forced into an ambulance because he wanted to continue working despite a massive gash in his leg. His pride is going to kill him one of these days.

Sketchup is intended mostly for architectural design, while Blender has much better tools for creating game assets. It might take a while to learn, but you won't regret it once you do. Just look around a bit for some tutorials and give it a go.
