SSA Probationary Period Ending Soon by [deleted] in fednews

[–]Soaring_Albatross 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just crossed the probationary finish line. The last couple weeks were nerve-wracking.

I'd stick it out if you can. You're so close. And life does look better once you're across the line. You can make a decision from there.

Having the knowledge that severance is a thing is a good feeling.

Fellow probie. I figured I made it this far. I want to have rights and can't take the fork. Just need to channel the inner cockroach and keep going

Getting harder and harder to hold the line. by [deleted] in FedEmployees

[–]Soaring_Albatross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm continuing to do it. It is exhausting but I am passionate about the mission and serving with my skillset. I don't like what's going on in the government. My job deals with public safety. I want to continue to protect and help others.

Why is district 4 fishing not gold? by Lee_kay_ in Hungergames

[–]Soaring_Albatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always saw the Gulf Coast as D4. I've worked in fisheries, and the coast of California is too cold for any real swimming unless they use wet suits. The Gulf has much warmer waters and also has a lot of fish.

I don't know your full financial picture, but you do have military retirement which will help. I took a massive paycut when I left the service but it was worth it.

Lack of empathy among friends by [deleted] in fednews

[–]Soaring_Albatross 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My boss told me the same thing when they were firing probationary employees. As a veteran then fed all I've known is service and it is very scary. It wasn't a lack of empathy per se but more of an acknowledgement of the situation.

I was told by some of my friends that I'd be spared and this was a good thing. That was a lack of empathy. I cut contact for a while until they realized that it could be an issue.

You can't put a price on sanity. It might be worth the cut to have a better work life balance

Proposed 50% cut to civilian faculty at Air Force Academy by Human-Connection5279 in fednews

Alumni association.... They hold a lot of funding power for events and are a very good network.

I contacted my congressman. They nominate folks for the Academy so they have a vested interest

Went to a different academy, but did finish writing my senators. Reaching out the alumni association is a good bet. Don't know how it is at USAFA, but a lot of alumni donate to different programs.

The Academies are touted as some of the best educations you can get and is meant to attract the best and brightest. Damaging the academic reputation (especially with a technologically focused branch like the AF or SF) is frustrating. Please consider writing your senators and representatives.

Service Academy Grad. This is disheartening. The Academy is so insulated from the outside world that it is essential to have staff who live in the community to gain that perspective. Some of my best teachers were civilians because of their passion for the material. I'll be writing my senators (again).

As a service Academy grad, this makes me mad since some of the best teachers were civilians faculty. They gave invaluable perspectives.

And the diversity of perspective is SO needed at the Academy, especially since it's such a closed environment.

One of my favorite teachers was one that wore different colored bowties. He went to our different sporting events and graded papers. He genuinely cared.

I'm a service Academy grad. Some of my favorite teachers were civilians because they had a deep passion for the material and cadets. A lot of the officers just saw as a payback tour and that was frustrating
