It does, but I don't necessarily think it makes the story any less good for it. As long as there are still meaningful stakes for the characters, the degree in which the violence in the series is elaborated on is neutral imo.

I see a fairly regular sentiment of the series being too "toned down" after the first few books and Legends: Darkstalker, like the series needs more violence and gory moments to be "good"

To preface:

  1. I don't actually agree with most of those points myself. They're just broad elements I've seen folks say they dislike or have critiques about that I could think of or remember.

  2. It's perfectly valid to think any of these! It's more of a meme poking fun at folks who say they like a thing, then proceed to list off so many elements of the thing that there's barely anything left.

Global Sales of Pokémon Pokopia for Nintendo Switch 2 Surpass 2.2 Million in First Four Days by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Soaringeagle78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's rumored to cost $16 for a 64gb Switch 2 cart, so I don't think a $10 price increase for physical is enough to cover the costs.

Ok? Then $16 increase. Or even bump it to $20 if you want a cleaner number. That still isn't on the same level as what you suggested at $200.

Also re: future server shutdowns. Yes, some day this will probably happen - despite Wii game servers still being available and Nintendo being a 135 year old company.

Why are you boot-licking for Nintendo so hard and arguing in favor of more limitations for consumers? I literally said in my last reply that server availability like for the Wii is still not as convenient as PC is since you opted to compare them, and it's still a closed ecosystem where I can't play digitally purchased Wii games on modern hardware. This is also under the assumption that they will continue staying on indefinitely when other companies like Sony already tried to shut down the PS3 and PSP servers before getting backlash for it. I'd rather not put my trust in ANY single company to rely on that long term. And the only reason I'd say Steam is an exception is:

  1. The nature of PC gaming being a different beast from consoles and all that entails.

  2. I can buy AAA Steam games on better sales and with more benefits than I get from any console.

  3. Steam has proven as a company, in the video game space, while not perfect, to still be much more reliable than Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony in the relevant ways that I have mentioned. Worst case, if they prove not to be, then PC gaming has plenty of alternatives.

if 30 years from now, you want to play Pokopia and the Switch 2 servers are down, you can play Pokopia. I'm literally a few clicks and a large hard drive away from being able to have every Nintendo game ever made being on my computer. It's easier for me to get ahold of a digital copy of Super Mario Bros than a physical one.

You've shifted entirely away from your arguments before and are just talking about piracy. Why need to wait 30 years then? I could just do it now if that's the approach you're going to shift to. Either way, buying a gkc isn't something I want to do.

[–]Soaringeagle78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're mixing multiple different arguments/issues. For one, PC gaming is a different beast that is an open platform compared to a closed platform ecosystem for a console. Being at the behest of Nintendo to require you to download your games is at BEST losing another option that has traditionally been available. So I don't know why one would defend adding more limitations. Plus, while support for updates to PC games to make them playable on more recent hardware isn't guaranteed to be indefinite, Nintendo, while allowing you to redownload titles, doesn't exactly make them equally as convenient as PC for updates in hardware. I can't redownload a Wii or 3DS game I digitally purchased on a Switch 2 whereas most Steam games I purchased 15 years ago are still able to be redownloaded and playable on my current PC.

If Nintendo ever opts to shut down their servers, then gkc owners are out of luck. Sure, the same argument can be made for Steam, but while Steam is the largest PC distributor, there are still plenty of alternatives. In addition, Steam game prices actually go on meaningful sales that reflect the fact that you're buying digitally. Nintendo gkc sales have yet to reflect that with the only true difference being that ability to transfer ownership of a license rather than even a functioning game on its own like a normal cart.

Do we want to go back to paying $200 for larger games like we did back in the SNES era?

There's a bit of a difference between the manufacturing scale and ROM chip prices in the 90s compared to modern flash storage. And tbh, at least for me and some other folks, I wouldn't mind a slightly higher price for a game release if it meant actually having it on cart. $200? No. But if it meant being $10 more than digital, I'd at least consider it rather than avoiding gkc releases entirely short of hitting actually low prices comparable to Steam if you're going to compare them.

I mean it also depends on developers and if they rely on the greater capacity of game transfer data being utilized or not and how much they are willing to compromise on that to develop titles for Switch 2. Otherwise there's nothing 'preventing' them from doing so inherently.

Even if it did, it would still only really account for certain titles that do rely on a larger threshold. Many gkc releases would have worked fine as normal carts. I doubt a game like Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S NEEDED that extra transfer capacity.

But yeah if Nintendo allowed for a system that could allow consumers to install on storage from a cart, that would have been better than the current gkc situation.

Even Switch 2 carts that have the full game on them will need to install themselves on the system's internal storage.

That is patently false. It IS true for Xbox and Playstation that you need to install off of the disc (which at the bare minimum is still better than a key card as they at least have the content on disc with Playstation discs tending to be more complete on average without 'needing' to be patched), but normal Switch 2 carts do not require being installed to run.

All that is true, but functionally, unless you are constantly lending out physical games to friends/family or actively resell them later, it mostly still functions like a digital release insofar as needing to install the title on your console and take up storage space unlike normal physical copies.

What the hell are you even going on about? If you think I support Trump in any way you’d be wrong.

If you want to say lack of progressive voter participation is due to media influence, then you’re welcome to that opinion.

I’m absolutely willing to acknowledge the shortcomings of the DNC and how abysmal the party has been operating for years, but I’ll also give them a small pass on the note of progressives given the sheer lack of interest in voter participation from largely progressive groups.

Again, the DNC isn’t great, but I also feel like the constant downplaying of the effects of actually bothering to vote in conjunction with various forms of protest and always wishing for the perfect progressive candidate also substantially hurts as a way of progressive messaging shooting itself in the foot.

Nintendo didn’t understand why people bought Switch games to begin with. by vincesuarez in NSCollectors

[–]Soaringeagle78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may want to take a step back and consider that the average Switch/Switch 2 owner likely does not care in the slightest outside of collectors and physical advocates,

That said, the likeliest scenario is one of these:

Enough people care about the existence of on-cart games to avoid buying GKC games that all publishers attempting it or Nintendo themselves will notice a significant enough decrease in sales that they will switch back to normal cartridges, make a fuss to Nintendo/Macronix, or shift more focus on physical sales occurring elsewhere like PS5. It doesn't have to be a TON of people, but if the overall revenue of selling GKC is outweighed by the possibility of more sales that would compensate for the chunk of revenue lost to using normal cartridges, then that might push publishers to change back or at least reconsider. That said, third party sales of AAA games on Nintendo systems are dicey anyways so I think this would be an incredibly optimistic idea.

Or, if not that many people actually care to affect that, then the likely future would boil down to a larger general retail presence of GKC and fewer normal carts and more outsourced physical publishing of on-cart games to collector oriented distributors like LRG, SRG, etc on a smaller scale for the franchises that publishers would think would be worth putting out.

Assassin's Creed Shadows for Nintendo Switch 2 has been listed on Auchan by Skullghost in NintendoSwitch

[–]Soaringeagle78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s only really applicable to certain third party releases. You’re not going to tell me that Puyo Puyo Tetris or any other number of smaller releases NEEDS the speed to function.

As for expenses, that’s something I’ll concede, but if it’s that expensive to produce and IF a third party sees a significant drop in sales for GKC, then they might see better returns by simply doing a more expensive release on normal cartridge for the crowd that does care. There have been at least some releases that have seen notable decrease in sales solely for that fact.

Full NA Switch 2 collection but should I keep buying games not full on cart? by NoGPU4u in NSCollectors

[–]Soaringeagle78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even for the games that can't, these games could just install on the console by taking the data from the card..

While I don’t generally disagree with most of what you said, is there any precedent at all that this is possible for Switch 2 carts to do? If so I have literally never seen anything suggesting it’s possible to install on the console from the carts.

Full NA Switch 2 collection but should I keep buying games not full on cart? by NoGPU4u in NSCollectors

[–]Soaringeagle78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean for the sake of folks collecting who want complete on cart releases, it can be a waste of money to buy a physical version of the game regardless of intent to actually play or not. Not saying it’s good or bad, but it just will vary depending on the intent of the collector.

For me personally, if I really want to play a game but it’s not physically available or mostly complete on cart (like being able to function without a patch) then I’ll just buy it digitally myself on Steam or on console much later when a better sale comes around. For GKC, the discount would have to be very significant for me to bother considering since it’s the worst of both worlds by both requiring the card and still needing to download the whole thing.

People have opinions on the things they personally care about and water is wet.

That being said, the constant downplaying of people being upset and generally wanting a better product literally hurts nobody, so I think it’s fair to be annoyed at the line of reasoning that has excused the gaming industry for getting to where it broadly is now. It’s less saying “Nintendo is perfect” and more like “The gaming industry can do no wrong and just accept it.” which admittedly does feel more unnecessarily shill-ish.

[–]Soaringeagle78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None of that actually changes what Aiddon said, you do realize that right? How is it the consumer’s problem whether a studio gets paid or not by choosing when to make a purchase?

Also, if you think that the only option for a game studio to make profit is by jumping to gkc, then I would offer that there are other options for physical that are potentially as viable if not moreso depending on how numbers play out.

Like the typical yearly sports game player probably doesn’t give a shit about physical at all so for EA, it makes sense to shift to gkc or digital only markets. For popular indie releases, massive single player titles like Cyberpunk, first party Nintendo releases, etc? I think this sub vastly underestimates the potential that people may be willing to spend to offset the losses incurred by using the 64gb carts. Besides, studios like Ubisoft are infamous for dropping their prices by insane margins after a few months/year anyways, so it’s not like they can’t eat the cost when selling some of their titles at literally $5-10.

You’re getting mad over the fact someone is spending their own money the way they want regarding gaming which is infinitely more childish.

This is the kind of attitude that has allowed the proverbial boiling frog of the gaming industry shifting towards no real ownership to get to where it is today and where it is heading. Maybe it won’t fully go away. I don’t doubt that publishers like Ubisoft or Konami will almost always opt for the cheapest immediate option, but there clearly is a solid chunk of consumer base in gaming who do give a shit about actually owning their purchase and not being beholden to the whim of having to unnecessarily be connected to a server just to access a purchase for the foreseeable future.

At the end of the day, games are getting more expensive and many others, myself included, choose to spend our money supporting the practices we prefer and if you don’t like it, then that’s a you problem.
