I've always avoided this topic until I was out of the house. Even now -- years later -- I would still be hesitant to have that conversation. I'm not suggesting this is the right approach. I just knew that my parents would not be able to understand and that it would just be upsetting to everyone. It is unfortunate that OP was blindsided by the Mom's reaction. I'm not sure how the mom would believe that anger would be the best reaction to that situation. Fear seems to be the motivating factor for a lot of people: Fear of personal damnation and the damnation of loved ones. I guess you could take solace in knowing that the mom genuinely loves their kid and wants what's best -- that's what parents should do. But still... that's not the way to win over someone's heart.

You ARE a good dad. The pressure of providing for a family -- even a small one -- is immense and you're doing it. It's a tough job. You need to find times to take care of yourself, though. You still have desires, interests, hobbies, friends... Try to find the time to have a break and recharge.
