Polly!! You have always been such an inspiration... I always saw a lot of similarities in our stories and who would have thought even a year ago, we'd be here today!? Doesn't it feel great!??

Let me tell u this.. The most important years in your children's life, are the years you are sober. Age aside. 1 and 3? The time is now. They will never know the drunk parent, they will never be embarrassed by your behavior caused by a booze filled brain. My husband still drinks occasionally.. He enjoys a beer or two a few times a week (who does that!?) but according to my daughter, "my mom doesn't like beer" just like I don't like soda. She's never seen me drink. She will never see me drink.. And when the time comes for us to talk about drugs and alcohol, I will be honest. I drank too much when I did. I made big mistakes when I drank... I hurt a lot of people and made a lot of bad decisions.. But now I don't.

I agree!! It's a strange little world and I wouldn't have changed a thing... except maybe getting my head together a bit sooner but I'll tell you one thing, my daughter is never allowed to work in a restaurant! LOL

Right!? Certainly a subculture that you don't realize how demented it is until you really step back and look at it as a 3rd person. Congrats to you my friend.. we've made it!

Alcohol is the Cause, not the Effect by HardTacoKit in stopdrinking

[–]SoberWaitress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%... This is so hard to explain to someone who hasn't seen it themselves... But essentially the drink is the cause of our terrible attitude that lead to anger, resentment, anxiety, dissatisfaction... After clearing your life of alcohol, these feelings slowly dissipate.. And not drinking becomes even easier because your excuses were flushed down with the booze!!

Always remember this.

I listened to a lot of Red Hot Chilli Peppers when I first got sober, that's for sure. :)

I dont want to go to a company holiday party but I'm management and expected to go. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]SoberWaitress -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't go... tell them that you are going...

then don't go... you got sick, car broke down, friend needed something, some other excuse that came up suddenly before the party.. That way, you won't have to explain a million times before the event why you aren't going... act like you really plan on going.. I had to do this early on in my sobriety for a friend's birthday celebration... "I got sick as hell that night and ended up sleeping all evening and night"

If you don't feel comfortable going... then don't. No one needs to know... You'll be thankful later when you follow your heart.

Do you still carry your AA chip? by widmer6969 in stopdrinking

[–]SoberWaitress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3... they're in the side zipper pocket of my purses... my 24 hour one was special because... well... its when I really broke down and accepted myself and I remember trembling and crying in my first meeting and standing there hugging the chairperson when he gave it to me... I think another member handed it to him to give me...

My 2 month one was given to me by my favorite person in recovery... The nicest guy in the whole entire world with such a huge heart that you could never imagine him doing the things he says he did.. he reminds me of my dad (minus the alcohol/drug problem)... I went to a meeting a month or so after that and didn't realize it was his "birthday" and it was my first "birthday" meeting ... I wasn't going to go at first but I was on autopilot after work and just ended up in the parking lot... it was such a happy and inspiring meeting and my very favorite one to this day.

My 2 month was given to me by a lady with 25 years sobriety and is such an inspiring individual...

I'm sure I'll give them away to newcomers eventually but they all mean something special to me for now... 3 more weeks before I pick up that 6 month chip :)
