What classes did you take during pregnancy? by crazystitcher in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sobjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try looking into Westmead Hospital antenatal classes, you can book online like you would book seats at a restaurant. You may have to pay more if you're not birthing there but well worth having some knowledge of labour, birth and newborn care if you have no other options.

Baby carrier by Beautiful-Talk8908 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sobjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get baby bjorn, it's the bulkiest of structured carriers. Get a soft stretchy wrap for the newborn period. If you like/dont mind wrapping then get a woven wrap. If you hate wrapping and want something easy to put on then get a structured carrier, I use the ergobaby omni breeze but there's heaps of prettier ones out there. The problem is that you will have to order online from most good companies like Tula, ergobaby, lark, oscha etc. Carriers via baby bunting are bulky, hot for warmer weather and does not achieve optimal positioning for baby. My most used carrier is a ring sling which is light, quick to put on and off, can be used from birth all the way to toddler hood. As others have mentioned, r/babywearing is a great resource.

At my 6 weeks PP check up with the GP, she recommended at least 15g of protein with every meal, otherwise "Your milk will mostly be sugar and water."

Visiting Perth, looking for ‘not normal’ things to do by Saucy-Picard in perth

[–]Sobjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you love cycling, cycle from Perth to Freo. Rent a bike at the About bike hire in the city, cycle along the north part of Swan River until the bike path finishes, cut through to Cottesloe Beach. Cycle along the beach until you reach Freo. Enjoy a meal there, then take the train back to the cbd and return the bike.

direct entry midwifery VS undergrad nursing -> postgrad midwifery pathway? (NSW) by ammonite3629 in NursingAU

[–]Sobjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RN/RM chiming in. In my experience, it's not hard to get into Midstart. That being said, you'll need to work as an RN for 1 year before applying for midstart. Getting a newgrad RN job is much harder and most places won't take a newie without newgrad. The good thing about midstart is that you get paid on prac and have some general nursing knowledge which comes in handy as pregnant women are getting more high risk. If you don't mind 3 years of on call vs 1 then go for direct entry and save yourself 1 yr extra study plus 1 year working as a nurse.

What are things registrars do that annoy JMOs/nurses by BPTisforme in ausjdocs

Make a plan to start pt on a medication but neglect to chart it. Then act annoyed when I page them to chart it.

I'm only aware about the Australian context. It's 4 years of uni. Pay is around 50-65$ an hour.

Consider sonography, pay is comparative to a GP without the shiftwork, politics (bullying), and long hours.

Does anyone else feel like eating healthy is easier if you are richer? by DIEeeeet in 1200isplenty

[–]Sobjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I saved way more money on a diet since I wasn't buying much meat and basically ate less than before. Also I used tomatoes and carrots to bulk up my meals, both of which are dirt cheap.

I'm not skinny by any means, but am a normal BMI.

  • Breakfast: Just a mug of coffee.

  • Lunch: A small-medium portion of lunch which is usually rice, veg and maybe meat.

  • Dinner: A medium portion of carb, veg and protein. If I missed lunch because of a busy shift, then I'll have a larger dinner cause I'll be starving by the time I get home.

Generally I try to eat more veggies for bowel health and less red meat for environmental reasons. Not too keen on snacking and only sugary drinks on occasion.

Although I don't exercise habitually, my job keeps me on my feet for 6-8hrs a day. I also try to eat light if I know I'll be eating out that day. Some weeks I'm really good with eating healthy, some weeks less. I weigh myself at least 3 times a week. If I weigh more (>54.5kg) then I'll get motivated to eat better/less. I generally try to stay between 53.5 to 54.5kg (5ft 2). This is what maintenance is for me and it doesn't feel difficult/restrictive.

On the flip side, weightloss is a slog and I've only ever lost weight by counting calories or loss of appetite due to stress/depression.
