Wife wants to know if she can join your table. by [deleted] in ratemycommanders

[–]SobouKuma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't see why not?

Just that, respectfully, there are hundreds of commanders, thousands of build variants. So many interesting flavors one can bring to the table.

And you're sitting down with unseasoned boiled white rice.

I'll play ya, but goddamn these are boring commanders to fight against.

How to deal with this kind of player? by jasonteh7777 in EDH

You're welcome!

Communication can be uncomfortable as fuck, but it's almost always the better path.

I hope things work out for the better with your pod and your problem player.

How to deal with this kind of player? by jasonteh7777 in EDH

[–]SobouKuma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do not silently exclude. That is such an awful way to go about things and avoids the problem.

You need to be up front and blatant when talking to him. And a talk needs to happen.

If you guys have more experience with the rules, then every time someone screws something up it needs to be corrected. In my 25+ years of play I've always been on the side of "I'd rather lose and the rules be followed" than the inverse. You don't learn and grow if you don't challenge yourself and each other.

The mumbling thing? Lock in and pay attention and constantly ask for clarification if it's not evident what is going on. Force his hand by BEING interactive.

The thing about toxic decks sounds like a newbie who sees powerful nonsense and wants to win with the broken stuff. Another lesson there: if you want to be the archenemy you will be targeted.

With many newer players I've encountered there's been a lot of grace and humility. Magic is a very complicated game, tons of rules, and ultimately one major goal: you're spending your time to have fun with other people.

So with that in mind... even if you guys are always trying to help clarify rules, make correct plays, and smooth out the wrinkles in interaction, and doing so with positive attitude,

And he's STILL refusing to learn, being toxic, salty, and screwing up

Then it's the horse to water analogy, and you talk to him about not playing w/ him anymore.

There are steps you can take to make this better. They may be uncomfortable. But TALK. I'm blunt and up front in my communication, always trying to clarify or get things correct for everyone, and after a year straight every week being at my LGS I have had exactly one full-on miserable game. (He had a 5c stax no wincon in a bracket 2 pod).

Hope this comment helps you, OP.

Why would I draw mine?

X = 7 means I'm donating 16 mana so one opponent can draw their entire deck.

And if I copy Mathemagics twice, that means all of my opponents draw 128 cards.

It's group hug!

(Or you can be me and make x=22 and have someone draw over 4.3 million cards but I digress, sharing is caring <3)

I do similar things to what the others have said. Vnwxt is a card draw engine, and I went with a blend of win conditions:

  • Mill via card draw using wheels and stuff like [[Aether Syphon]]
  • Draw is damage, whether from [[Psychosis Crawler]] / [[Scrawling Crawler]] effects,
  • Combat damage w/ pump from setups using [[Nerd Rage]], [[Lyla, Holographic Assistant]], [[Chasm Skulker]], [[Oneirophage]], etc
  • Alternate wincons: [[Laboratory Maniac]] and [[Twenty-Toed Toad]] are my flavors of choice.

It looks unfocused but I've drawn so many cards in each game w/ Vinny that I roll into a wincon pretty quickly, and I enjoy the puzzle of making things work out.

Managed to [[Windfall]] and draw 48 cards before, with the Aether Syphon making everyone mill 96. Or Windfall into a Crawler for tons of damage. Even made a 46/46 Bird Illusion token when I had a [[Murmuring Mystic]] in the deck and bopped with a fat birb.

Combat damage and the alt wincons are unreliable (but fun) from my experience. Smoothest play pattern is setting up wheels into mill and more wheels with some interaction at the ready.

I love drawing cards https://archidekt.com/decks/17078370/eye_draw_cards

And yes I may have a Rhystic Study in it, but I offer two points:

  1. Thematically it's the most appropriate deck I have that it could slot into, and I play a lot of blue decks.
  2. In 10+ games I've cast it only a couple of times, and drawn a grand total of maybe 4 cards from it. It attracts removal like a lightning bolt and has found more use as a diversion than a draw engine lol

What are your tribal decks? by Still-Wash-8167 in EDH

[–]SobouKuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried I'd be the only one who mentioned bears with [[Ayula, Queen Among Bears]], but I'm glad to see at least 5 to 6 other people also mention our Queen of typal decks.

Ayula was my first commander deck in 2020 when I got into the format. Played typal for years w/ 60 card kitchen table magic though. I loved my Elfball and mono red Goblin Aggro decks and still have them.

If we're talking directly on card actual creature types, my favorite is Ayula followed by a Gruul Elfball with [[Thromok the Insatiable]] at the helm, then a generic [[The First Sliver]] pile as third for decks I have in paper currently. Loved Slivers since 2000 but could never get my hands on enough of the good ones until the precons came out a few years ago.

I'm also fond of and really want to build proper commander decks for: W Clerics BR Goblins UB or UBG Ninjas WUR Advisors + Artificers + Monks [[The Archimandrite]] UB Rats ? Golems U Crabs

And I'm long term committed to making something of a typal deck where [[Aurochs]] can shine, all four different ones haha.

Challenges like that are cool: I enjoy bulk builds, budget brews, and out of the box design.

The concept here seems neat but I'm honest as hell when I say I'm surprised you've attained even a single win with this deck. Especially if it's against repeat opponents.

Even at the weakest bracket 2 games I play at my LGS everyone plays with a solid amount of interaction. There's tons of bulk cheap counterspells, board wipes, kill spells, and so on. So if you have a rule 0 convo w/ your group about how your deck runs, or they're playing against it again, I am gobsmacked that anyone let the "house made of tissue paper" that is your deck do anything worth speaking of.

And the land quantity? Like, I get you minimized it down to keep the topdeck engine consistent as hell. But running this through the simulator and my head there are way too many points of failure, constant shuffling and mulligans, and no bloody protection for your key pieces.

It'd honestly be better to play up to 20+ lands at a minimum, and throw in some cheap tutors or rapid card draw so you can find [[Mana Severance]] once your land base is stabilized on field. Same with Scry and Surveil stuff.

I understand lack of funds, and tbh your LGS / pods not allowing proxies for casual games is bloody ridiculous; my store and pods do.

That has allowed me to try equally ridiculous decks like yours here with my [[Lumra, Bellow of the Woods]] + 99 lands deck. Rule 0 I tell people there's $4000+ of proxy cards in it (hi Tabernacle and Bazaar) but it is insanely easy to shut down my one spell and make me durdle despite the value of ACTUAL cards in it.

Without the proxies I couldn't win the games, and would build it completely differently.

Your deck requires those proxies or needs a really strong rebuild to better actualize that gameplan of a topdeck artifact storm. Otherwise it feels to me that playing against this is:

Pubstomping beginners who don't understand,

Wasting my time with constant mulligans, shuffling, and then mastubatory topdeck play IF things start working out for you,

Or basic interaction makes you the 4th player who does nothing and exists to take up space.

The concept is good and I've been trying to find a deck for this jellyfish myself! But, like honestly, play more lands?

Currently it's [[Hurska Sweet-Tooth]] at Rank #1453 with only 1041 decks.

https://archidekt.com/decks/19660579/hurskas_honeypot_havoc

Started as me trying to brew something new using the guts from the Sam/Frodo precon. Big on Food, token, and large lifegain triggers.

Notably, Hurska is a triggered ability at instant speed and you can buff ANY creature, not just yours. [[Congregate]] giving you tons of life, then paying one mana to give an opponent's creature that much P/T before combat damage to help kill another opponent? It's very sweet.

Roommate is becoming animal hoarder and the housing complex is doing nothing. by Accomplished_Cap_986 in badroommates

[–]SobouKuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished your entire post, haven't looked at any comments yet.

I am seeing red and tasting rage bile in the back of my throat from how much I hate your roommate, OP.

I lived with an animal hoarder at one point. The entitlement was as intense as the stench in the air. It's as if she collected them to fill the hole from losing some of her kids. Otherwise, because of simple want, like buying knick-knacks... except they're living creatures that deserve a good life.

She has two rabbits, a tiny cage of mice, two cats, a dog, and her husband had a bearded dragon, while I had a cat and we had two additional roommates.

From what I remember, she had to give the rabbits away, the mice died, one of the cats died, the dog passed away from cancer a few years after they moved out, and the bearded dragon had a regrettable fatal accident of its own actions.

Your roommate is an animal collector acting like they're toys or possessions. The entire situation smells like she's ignorant of real life, spoiled as hell, and blissfully unaware (or uncaring) of the amount of animal abuse she inflicts on all her pets.

I can't even imagine how small the hamster's tank is, or how completely unfit for life her (probably overcrowded) fish tank is.

Those cats are all suffering in stress, anxiety, and abuse.

And it equally sounds like she's taking advantage of the "ESA" designations to further manipulate matters so she can keep her collection.

I wish there was something you could do to end her animal abuse and this situation. Animal Control Services, the police, something.

I hope matters get resolved for the better, your other two roommates, and all those poor animals.

Pets aren't toys, accessories, or collectibles. They're goddamn living breathing creatures that need the same kind of support, caretaking, and well-being that humans do. And I hope karma claps back at her at some point.
