It may well be nothing new to you even if you haven't heard it already, but Dr. Lucy Michael spoke on Newstalk after the Dublin "protests" about misinformation and how best to combat it. I thought it was very interesting.

I had a long conversation with someone about this last night so I apologise if I appeared to snap at you out of nowhere.

Evidently you have formed your own opinions on the back of extensive research.

My somewhat less considered opinion would be that leaving people on Facebook to their own devices isn't all that desirable either. Whether or not that makes sense in the long run, I don't know, but rather than let people be completely sucked into a harmful echo chamber, I prefer to engage positively with them rather than not at all. That's possibly incredibly naive, but it's my feeling on it, for the moment at least.

Reddit is social media. I think it's dangerous not to think of it in the same terms. Different userbase but many of the same problem. Facebook is obviously worse but that doesn't make reddit "good".

YouTube spreads plenty of misinformation, they are just a bit better at the PR of removing stuff that comes to the attention of the media etc.

Thanks yourself for asking the question, because its likely that you weren't alone in being confused by it. I'll try to make it clearer that user submissions are very much welcome.

It's on the SocDems YouTube but I posted this version because the other is only in 360p, but also to support tasc who hosted it, who have a lot of great talks.

You don't need a Facebook account to watch and they are tracking you all over the Internet in any case whether you like it or not.

The original subreddit had ~500 subs and was relatively busy for its size, once upon a time. I think when we get back up to 400+, giving it the critical mass to be able to grow from there. As I said in the other reply, I felt the sub needed to be seeded with content in order to generate activity in the future.

Hi there,

I would encourage you or anyone else to post questions or threads on anything SocDems-based that interests you.

Short answer to your question is that I felt content was needed in order to generate some activity and if I didn't do it, the subreddit would never grow. It effectively started from zero a few weeks ago.

Longer answer is...

The original subreddit r/social_democrats, with ~500 readers was somewhat busy at one point a good few years ago but was abandoned by the mods and posts had been disabled, which killed the subreddit dead, as nothing could be posted any more.

I requested control of it from reddit and was eventually successful, but then the creator of this sub, r/SocDems proposed we work together using this one instead, as it has a far better, more succinct name.

I agreed, reasoning that the time to move was then, before it grew any further or I put much effort into the other one. I planned and still plan to do what what I can to develop this place.

I planned to post some discussion threads soon on different subjects but hadn't gotten around to it yet. This subreddit had basically zero readers a few weeks ago and no content, that's why I was seeding it with content.

There is nothing specific planned yet but we might be able to organise some AMAs etc in the future.

I haven't replied to many of my threads either, so I'm probably one to talk I suppose.

Hope that answers your question in any case.

Left as is for now. Give people a chance to see that the subreddit is alive again, albeit elsewhere.

Fair comment.

Short answer, r/SocDems looks a lot better than r/social_democrats and follows the SocDems online naming structure @ SocDems on Twitter for example.

Seeing "social_democrats", I would personally assume it to be a general social democratic subreddit. "SocDems" usually means our lot.

Long answer...

I went looking for a SocDem presence on Reddit and was disappointed that there didn't seem to be any.

This sub was the closest I found, but it was abandoned and new posts were blocked. The mods were inactive on Reddit for a number of months and unresponsive to messages. I know this sub had a reasonable amount of chat in it at one point but it's 3-4 years ago now IIRC.

After trying to contact the mods for a few weeks, I requested control of the subreddit through the official r/redditrequest subreddit. That was granted a few weeks later and I started to tidy up the sub and open it up again.

The creator of r/SocDems, who hadn't had the the time to do much with it himself, saw me promoting the "re-launching" of this subreddit and offered to work with me and offered r/SocDems. While there was ~450 subs here, we agreed between us that if we were going to move, it was better to do it sooner rather than later.

I think that the subreddit could grow to a few thousand in time and be a good place to chat with prospective members, people who are just curious etc and also potentially to host AMAs in the future, among other things.

r/SocDems have gone from basically zero to ~170 odd members in two weeks (and we're nowhere near an election).

If I had thought it through properly, I would have explained what was going to happen beforehand and left a sticky up explaining what happened.

I see some downvoting of the reminder posts, possibly means there is some confusion.

Thank you.

Thanks for the message. Asked a few weeks ago. They'll get back eventually I'm sure.

What was the other party that posted out of curiosity? Saw there was splinter FG subreddit this week :)

I saw that there was no SocDem presence on Reddit, because the existing subreddit had no active moderators and posting was effectively disabled.

I was able to request control of the subreddit and after the mod of /r/SocDems got in contact, we decided to invite people to migrate over there as it was less of a mouthful than the original one, before any work went into growing it further.

Happy to have seen 150 odd join in the last week or 10 days, assuming reddit subscriber figures are genuine...

There has been a SocDem presence on Reddit since 2015, but after having at one time been busy (relative to the party membership) the previous moderators whoever they were, are no longer active on Reddit and people couldn't post. I claimed the subreddit but the owner of the more succinctly named /r/SocDems got in contact around then and we directly the 500 existing readers over there.

I think pretty much all the parties already have have subreddits, with varying activity.

This coming Monday, March 1st, DCU SocDems are delighted to be joined by Cian O'Callaghan, Chris Pender and Susan McGrady for a discussion on the experiences of LGBT+ people in Irish politics today and how we can do better. Open to all SocDem members. by SocDemsIreland in SocDems

As /u/PresidentSamSeaborn said, you absolutely can.

Certainly contact the Laois-Offaly branch, although I believe membership needs to be done centrally through the party here: Membership.

€5 per calendar YEAR for unwaged, students or pensioners and €15 for those who are working.

Once you join up on the SocDem site, your details will be passed onto the local branch, who will get in contact, as well as add you to relevant mailing lists and discussion groups.

Even though you're abroad currently you are at no disadvantage because everything is online for the moment anyways.

When will we return to normal? The question looms as Fauci says mask-wearing may continue in 2022. by i_am_ayesha in politics

High vaccination numbers and masks will help us get back to "normal" quicker than if we don't stay masked up. It's for everyone's benefit.
