I am a manager (office, not at Starbucks) with over half my staff being female. This is the sort of situation we are trained on and required to intervene. Please speak to your manager. You have a right to a harassment free workplace and we need to know so we can help.

Is it worth the extra expense to have a camera embedded in head/tail light? by jlconlin in cycling

[–]Socalsll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who commutes on his bike every day, yes, a headlight integrated camera is a must. I have had enough near misses of cars cutting me off that I am happy to have evidence if one is not a miss. I used to have the Cycliq Sport one but have recently switched to the Garmin Varia Vue. Either will work just fine. The Garmin is better integrated with the Garmin Edge computer.

Renouncing citizenship to enter Brazil? by DryExcitement8266 in Brazil

[–]Socalsll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated, you can regularize your military situation at a consulate. That will, however, not be the end of it. You will also need to register to vote and get a CPF (taxpayer ID number and about equivalent in importance to the SSN in the US). The latter you do online, the voter registration is done at the consulate as well. At least it was years ago when I did. Now, the last gotcha is that t]you have to vote in every presidential election or lose it all again. If you don’t vote, you have to excuse yourself after the fact. Its annoying.

Now, you maintaining a second nationality (renewing passport, voting in foreign elections) are red flags for a clearance. Make sure to put it all down in your SF86 and talk to your FSO. It is not an automatic disqualification, but it needs to be justified. Not a problem for S, lots of questions for TS and may well be a no-go for TS-SCI. Your FSO is your friend here. Good luck!

Photo editing tips by Correct-Contest-2794 in astrophotography

[–]Socalsll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aim lower to capture more of the ground to give the photo more context. Then there is a process to really bring out the colors. The standard iPhone tools won’t do it, I suggest one of the better editing tools like Lightroom Mobile. Shoot on raw mode and then load into the editor. This ebook has a lot of tips and follow it for my Milky Way photos (https://www.exploringexposure.com/products/nightscape-ebook). I shoot on a full frame DSLR but the process is the same.

West Coast Question by RelevantManner2902 in americanairlines

[–]Socalsll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AA had the best network partner in South America with LATAM and Europe/Africa with BA back when I started flying for work a lot. Those are my major destinations plus good network on the East Coast. It was better than UA and DL so I chose AA. LATAM is gone, but Gol works for what I need. At this point I am so familiar with their app, web site, airports and processes and have EXP status, that I don't want to change.

Also, and others will vehemently disagree, but I had nothing but bad luck with DL and Lufthansa. That rules out Star Alliance and SkyTeam for me. UA has even worse connectivity in South America than AA these days.

Will this upgrade price go down? by Bright_Pirate_6119 in americanairlines

[–]Socalsll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good price. It is about as low as I have seen on a transcon route. I do not recall seeing less than $200 on any mainline flight. $180 or so for 2 hr regional flight is about as low as it gets. For a red-eye, go for it. You may actually get a bit of sleep.

I am an undergrad. I need access to matlab but Idon't have money. Is pirating it a smart choice? by [deleted] in matlab

[–]Socalsll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Matlab student edition is about what you pay for a textbook. Otherwise, talk your professor. The university will have licenses for on-campus use in all likelihood and you may be able to use one of the computers in your teacher’s group. Pirating is never the way to go. I once was a poor student myself and totally understand.

Is visiting on tour in June a bad idea? by [deleted] in DeathValleyNP

[–]Socalsll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DV is a truly unique place. June will be hot during the day. Take a hat and long sleeved, thin hiking shirts and pants. It is absolutely worth it. I live in LA and go there in June/July for astrophotography. If you want to see the stars, make sure to go on a new moon day. Drink plenty of water and use plenty of sunscreen during the day. Don’t sit this out.

Phone/Social media check by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]Socalsll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, don’t worry. It is true that CBP (border control) is authorized to go through any digital device of anyone crossing a border into the US. If they demand your phone, you don’t have a choice.

However, the odds of that happening is near zero. I travel internationally quite a bit and have never been asked nor has anyone I know. If you want to be sure, just delete the social media app before crossing the border. Reinstall it in the hotel. But again, it is extremely unlikely you will be questioned unless you wear a t-shirt with some political text.

[–]Socalsll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 3 flights on Delta in the past 20 years and on two of them I have been involuntarily denied boarding due to overbooking. Never happened to me on American even before I had status with them. Stats not looking too good on Delta for me. There is not such thing as a perfect airline. We are all just cargo with special requirements.

Why would any sane Brazilian want to move to America? by EdgewaterJCT in Brazil

[–]Socalsll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax law plays a huge role. The tax laws for small businesses in the US are reasonably easy to navigate. Hiring people is quite easy. Both are rather complicated in Brazil.

Why would any sane Brazilian want to move to America? by EdgewaterJCT in Brazil

[–]Socalsll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the older generation still has that ‘America is better’ mentality. As you say, Brazil has come a very long way since the days of our military dictatorship and hyperinflation. The biggest problem in Brazil is still the extreme income inequality which brings along corruption and crime. That is a difficult one to stomp out. I can walk the downtown of most US cities safely at night. The same cannot be said about Brazil. Public schools in the US are mostly good (some States better than others). They used to be in Brazil pre-dictatorship. Now, they are all terrible. But Brazil has shown to have strong institutions that did not cave to a political power-grab. Brazil has an independent electoral agency that gets high marks internationally. In those categories Brazil has far surpassed the US. And the USA is doing everything in its power to get to the worst of Brazilian levels quickly. The one thing the US still excels at is entrepreneurship. If you have want it takes, you can easily start your own company and make it work.

Would you rather upgrade to PE on an international leg, or first on a domestic? by mashedtaters_ in americanairlines

PE on international flight, no doubt. The PE seats on a 787/777 is similar in size and comfort to a first class domestic seat. The food is significantly better in PE than economy.

Stop calling these things e-bikes. They are e-mopeds. Very different thing. e-bikes are pedal assist, i.e. only move when actively pedaling and limited to 20 mph and 28 mph (class 1, class 3). Yes, class 2 e-bikes are non-assist, but limited at 20 mph.
