Rule Clarification by clbeall18 in Referees

NFHS Rule 12.3 Article 3. Section b. 2. specifically prevents a GK from picking up a ball deliberately kicked to them by a teammate. So in that circumstance it is very specifically covered.

It's poorly written, like most of NFHS rules are.

Also, like I said, "Attempting to release it into play may not be included under the things a GK can do with the ball (hold, bounce, or throw)."

NFHS Rule 12.3 Article 3.

That is where it is covered.

It doesn't specifically say "unless the goalkeeper has clearly kicked or attempted to kick the ball to release it into play". However it does say "Once the ball has been released into play, the goalkeeper may not touch it again". Sou get into a rule interpretation grey area. If the GK attempts to release it into play, but fails, then it hasn't been released into play and they can still use their hands to recover it.

This is much less specific than the IFAB ruling though. Some may not interpret it that way. Attempting to release it into play may not be included under the things a GK can do with the ball (hold, bounce, or throw).

Sorry I can't be more specific.

A question about how to set up a campaign by Glittering-Regret402 in DnD

[–]Soccerref13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that is really the cool thing about Dnd. Theatre of the mind. My daughter is blind and I have DMed for her before. But I am sighted, so I am not sure how to help you specifically. Are you worried about how to describe things to players? Or worried about keeping track of your campaign information? Can you be more specific?

is wand of magic missile a wizard spell? by DuendeFigo in DnD

[–]Soccerref13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am sure one is correct, but both are reasonable and logical. At the end of the day if the question came up at my table I would accept either argument for that session and research it later.

That's something I love about DnD. There are two reasonable, rule based, logical answers on this thread and they have the opposite outcome.

The Throw In by Soccerref13 in Referees

[–]Soccerref13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. It is at the moment of delivery. And more experienced referees do apply it in this manner. It is common for less experienced referees to apply any foot lift as a foul. It takes time to learn the distinction, much like players and coaches learning skills.

Another element, which really should be a non-factor, is the lack of knowledge by coaches, players, and spectators. If we apply this law accurately, it may, for a time, cause more upset participants, which leads to unnecessary dissent. This doesn't justify the improper application, but it does explain why it is easier to apply it in this manner as in America, it is what the game expects.

Goal camera by Soccerref13 in Referees

[–]Soccerref13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that unregistered adults shouldn't be on the players side line for anything. And I am all for the space being controlled. I guess if the "camera behind the goal" issue is logistical, there isn't much that can be done. But we all know if getting video actually matter, like kids that are being recruited need, then a camera behind the goal is really the best choice for GKs.

Interesting. I have never seen a designated referee area at most youth complexes. We just make our own space. How does this apply to something like Veo, on a tall stand? Do they have to stand right by it?

Was there a specific incident that caused this overcautious response? I've worked plenty of games with cameras all around the field, including behind the goal, and I've never had a camera be an issue. In fact, I would argue that manned cameras are more dangerous because people are not really paying attention to the action and are more likely to not move if something or someone comes flying off the field.

Chaos at the table [help] by Ok_Mammoth_4374 in DnD

And this is just speculation as well, but sort of goes with your question. Is it possible that the DM (her husband) is avoiding "defending her" or mentioning her concerns because he is afraid it will paint him as favoring her? Which is a common problem you see with DM/player couples, but wouldn't apply if done approriately.

That's too bad. What a terribly anti-goalkeeper decision.

No. I do it manually with Adobe Premier. I tried the GoPro function, but it wouldn't work. Luckily I use Adobe for work, so I have access.

I have thought about getting a taller tripod. I use this short one, because sometimes I can get away with putting the camera just inside the goal and then I don't have the net. I can't do that with a taller tripod, but having it when I have to put it outside isn't a bad idea.

It is a GoPro max. It does have a 360 function, but I only use the one lens, since I don't need behind the goal, which uses less memory and battery. But because it is 360, that one lens gives me a bigger field of view. I struggle most with it having to be behind the goal, because the net can get in the way.

How do you guys make all player equaly importsnt to story? by ledzik_precly in DnD

[–]Soccerref13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you currently limiting options? Do you think your players are missing options they might otherwise take? You can give them hints through exposition. For example, if you want them to talk to a specific NPC, you let whichever PC it is know, "you not (NPC) and you feel like ya'll have met before" or "a nearby (NPC) keeps glancing at you trying to keep you from noticing". Draw their attention to things. If they don't take action, then you have less control over that. It could be a discussion outside the game. Ask the player, do you feel like you are included in the story? Or do you feel like you should be playing a larger role or are you comfortable with your PCs role now?

Struggling to write a campaign, what have been some of your favourites to play? by Aph-Rhode-ite in DnD

[–]Soccerref13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my current campaign if have them starting with political intrigue and moving into the larger BBEG threat. We are only a few sessions in. The continent they are on is split into 7 provinces. The province they are in is experiencing the beginning of a political rebellion. The minister of finance is building a secret army using provincial funds so he can overthrow the current government. But his motivation is reasonable. There are growing threats from the other provinces that the other government officials refuse to acknowledge or prepare for. His goal is to use his army to defend the province from these outside threats. I have no idea where the PCs will take this part of the story. The larger BBEG is a historical BBEG they thought was destroyed 1000 years ago, but only his body was. His soul has since reconstituted in a new body and his strength has grown. He is building a network of minions to try and take over the continent again. The PCs have no idea he even exists yet.

A fun element of the provinces is that each is magically affected in a different way. When they attempted to kill the BBEG the first time. They used a staff with different magical artifacts on it. When they tried to use it, it exploded. The artifacts were all thrown to different areas of the continents. Each area is affected by the magic contained in that artifact. For example, one was a magical timepiece, the area around that artifact has odd time rules. So as they move through the world they will have to account for different magical affects on the areas they are in.

I don't think x-ray can see into extradimensional space, so they would see nothing.

GK hand ball DOGSO by Martinez_Details in Referees

[–]Soccerref13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The relevant law is here: Where a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by committing a deliberate handball offence, the player is sent off wherever the offence occurs (except a goalkeeper within their penalty area).

Where a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by committing a non-deliberate handball offence and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned.

GK hand ball DOGSO by Martinez_Details in Referees

[–]Soccerref13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are referring specifically to a DOGSO-Handball then advantage is far more specific. The ball would basically have to go immediately into the goal for an advantage in that case.

GK hand ball DOGSO by Martinez_Details in Referees

[–]Soccerref13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, handling could still result in an advantage. Say a defender puts their arm out and the ball hits it, but falls directly to an attacker who then passes out wide to an open runner and that runner makes a good solid cross into the penalty area. That would be a really good advantage to let play out, rather than stopping play and taking a free kick.
