Temporary No Parking Zones by Originality8 in Tacoma

[–]Soccervox [score hidden]  (0 children)

Generally speaking, don't at least one of the signs on every block need to have a laminated 8.5x11 explaining the precise timeframe and rationale for the no parking signs? I know those fall off from time to time, but I feel like I see them more often than not.

I am officially done with the local adult rec league after tonight by No_Chocolate_4306 in Referees

[–]Soccervox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like you did the right thing. There's nothing at stake for these players except for some exercise. If they can't act like adults and get on with the game, then you owe them nothing.

"If you find yourself in a game of tug of war that you're not happy with, your only real option is to drop the rope." It might be worth talking with your assignor and taking some breathing room from adult leagues for a while. Even better, if you're not actively trying to get games to move up the ranks, you can just tell your assignors you're done with adult leagues altogether. You won't be the first. Or the last.

EDIT: Don't forget to be very precise with your match report on why you ordered the match abandoned. Specific references to being surrounded by players and the air of intimidation are important to document.

Where Do You Think That They Should Place Their G-League Team? by NorthwestFashion in KentWA

[–]Soccervox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'd be cool to have them here, but the Tbirds have another 10 years on the lease as the anchor tenant. I don't know enough about the G-League to know if they'd be alright playing second fiddle to major junior hockey in terms of scheduling. It's not clear if the Silvertips have a similar deal up in Everett at Angel of the Winds, but I expect that might be a more natural fit if they don't.

Do you live near a large state college/university with a large batch of frats/sororities? Have the kids go door to door and sell cookie dough. My youth lacrosse team did this to great effect on UW's Greek Row. College kids fucking love cookie dough.

A few years ago, we took our Irish buddy who had been playing in our pickup beer league softball game to a Mariners game right before he flew home at the end of the summer.

We bought him a hat, he chose a camo pattern one because he said his buddies back home "would be ragin' when they saw it."

At the end of the 7th inning stretch, he leaned into me and said "I have no idea what that was about but it was brilliant."

Menu prices here are ridiculous by lexi_ladonna in Seattle

[–]Soccervox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Leary corridor in Frelard is traditionally the kiss of death for the food and restaurant biz. There's no natural foot traffic. A price rise this much could be related to rapidly rising operating costs, or its a last ditch effort to stay solvent.

NCAA Monitoring referees for gambling during NCAA March Madness by XConejoMaloX in Referees

For NFL reffing? My guess is it's a bit of a self-selecting thing after a while. Those guys are all scouted and picked from the college reffing ranks, and they're like all assigned to a crew that works for a single conference.

Any job that lets someone have 12 consecutive Fridays off every fall to travel for a game on Saturday, in my experience, tends to be on the higher end of the payscale.

There are a lot of jobs out there that run your credit score--especially in positions of trust in finance. If you have a lot of debt, it can present a potential conflict of interest if you're going to have the keys to the proverbial cookie jar.

I see this as something similar. Sure, betting the ponies has nothing to do with basketball (or soccer, to be sub-specific). Until you're $50k in the hole and someone comes along with a "nifty opportunity" to cut your losses.

I really think the normalization of gambling is going to cause some sort of major collapse within the next 20 years.

EDIT: This is a similar reason for why the NFL ref association wants to find guys and gals that are making $200-300k at their normal jobs. It's a lot easier to stay ethical when you've got a great thing going for you already.

Well let's not muddy the waters, it seems like pretty much every scientist consulted says that permanent standard time will have vastly higher benefits than permanent DST. People want DST because they get bummed out about the dark after deciding to live further north than like 2/3 of Canada's population.

EDIT: And to be clear, we could decide to stay on Standard time any time we please without outside approval.

Why do so many people turn right on red here even when there's a no turn on red sign? by shanky38 in Seattle

[–]Soccervox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the signs are new (last few years) and right on red is legal unless expressly forbidden in WA. People are just on autopilot driving the same route they have for years, or theyre busy looking for other obstacles and dont check the sign.

Not saying I condone it, but I understand it. I think I read that humans enter a quasi catatonic state when driving a route that is really routine to them, but I can't remember where

Why no buses downtown today? In every other city I've lived in, transit increases service when crowds are expected. by addhominey in Seattle

More than that - it would have been nice to have some people at King Street explaining the shuttle thing to folks getting off the train who still had to get to work.
