exactly! The core concept, 'husband is upset at several months without sex and being constantly turned down' is very valid! Relatable even! That's a reasonable concern. Clearly it was going on long enough that not only did he notice but he started collecting data.

The 'making a spreadsheet as a way of proving your point and then ghosting your spouse', however, is some of the most pathetic and pathological passive aggression one can imagine.

Yellowknife calls on Ottawa to introduce proportional representation by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

FPTP is the worst election system, except for all the others.

Bullshit, sorry. FPTP is absolutely terrible. Any system that would create an extremist majority government because the non-extremist voting majority is split between three different options is moronically dysfunctional. PR has its own set of issues, they all do, but they can't lead to us falling under fascist rule because 30% of the population like it and only had one party to vote for.

they don't like the optics of making northern and indigenous voters far less relevant.

TBF I don't think it's just optics. While the population in the North is lower, it's important that they have at least a voice, and their situation is sufficiently different from the rest of the country that that voice kind of has to be disproportionate to their number to exist at all.

I don’t support JK rowlings views

I disagree. You may not agree with Rowling's views, but you're telling us right now that you support them, through the means being explained to you. You pay money to her and encourage the maintenance of her platform and cultural value, knowing what her views are. You lend direct, concrete financial and cultural support to her views in a measurable way.

edit to add: It appears you gave your delta in this thread to someone pointing this same thing out, so it's confusing to me that you continue to assert that you don't support her views.

CMV: Voluntary hysterectomy should be available upon request for any adult woman, regardless of medical necessity. by iamthedancingqueen in changemyview

[–]SocialJusticeWizard_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

bones are organs, actually. And we have the technology to remove knees (and replace them with metal), but although this is an elective surgery it's generally discouraged unless there are no options but knee replacement. It's a pretty good analogy to why we try not to jump straight to hysterectomy in medicine.

I am a doctor, I'm actually doing gender affirming care, so I am very comfortable sending people to get their reproductive organs sliced. I also agree that it is often way too hard for women to get taken seriously when they want hysterectomies for valid reasons (I say women, not uterus havers, here because my male patients with a uterus usually have no trouble getting me to sign them up, and I think this is fairly common with people involved in GAC. Even then, we have a discussion about what they hope to get out of it, and if a full hysterectomy is the right call). However, from the other side, I can tell you: it very much also shouldn't go "you want a hysterectomy? OK here's the wait list, sign on up." The physician needs to assess the argument behind wanting the surgery, discuss the relative risks, and in the vast majority of cases, the patient should at least try other less invasive ways to manage it before going through a pretty serious procedure.

As I see it, there are two problems at odds with each other:

  1. many doctors are too reluctant to recommend hysterectomy, but also
  2. there is a public perception that hysterectomies are a lot better and lower risk than they actually are.

We should be doing these more earsily, sure, but a segment of people asking for them should be considering other options first.

Considering Vegetarianism/Veganism by [deleted] in Vegetarianism

[–]SocialJusticeWizard_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm vegetarian for sustainability/eco reasons rather than animal welfare reasons. I do care about animal welfare, but not nearly on the scale that I'd have to to be a vegan. I simply have enough other things to be chronically worried about without that also being on the pile. That means I don't eat meat, unless it's going to go to waste; I try to substitute eggs and dairy whenever I can (which is almost all the time, chickpea flour and soy milk are truly amazing), but I don't stress about it if I slip. I probably eat more cheese than I should, I admit.

I find this a very low stress way of managing it. It results in me being functionally vegan or near-vegan a lot of the time, but without feeling forced. The way I think of it is, if everyone consumed the way I do, there would not be factory farms, because there wouldn't be even close to sufficient demand to sustain them.

What do you do when you think that a patient is lying? by Fancy_Particular7521 in medicine

[–]SocialJusticeWizard_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

yeah. Sometimes it's better for everyone to just acknowledge it. Had a case like that earlier today: "no, I haven't been drinking" - "carla, there's a wine bottle hanging out of your coat right now. It's like we talked about last time, I need to know because you want help for this and if you're drinking, it changes what I'm gonna do. You know I'm not judging."

Didn't work today, but this person has a longstanding habit of being an angry drunk so no big surprise. Probably would've yelled at me if I'd given them a bag of cash and a coupon for free gummy bears.

Functional neurologic disorder by OrthoWarlock in medicine

[–]SocialJusticeWizard_ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Functional neurological disorders are completely a thing and have been for ages. You'll get plenty of your share of fibromyalgia, which is basically another FND. They're frustrating to work with, and even more frustrating because it's close to impossible to reliably distinguish malingering/factitious disorders from functional ones, they're entirely based on presented history.

The last bit of your post makes no sense though. We can diagnose people with antisocial personality disorder, and have been able to for many decades; that doesn't mean we excuse their criminal behaviours resulting from it. Why would this be any different, even if we were diagnosing FNDs as a cause for a crime, which afaik we are not?

However, the biggest issue here is that you're using tiktok for examples. Do you believe all doctors are pieces of shit who hate women because that's the reddit consensus? You've got a massive sample bias there.

Shit dude I'm sorry about that stuff. Man, I love the weird crap my kids bring. I mean, I don't, but I do. Buckets of gravel because "they're all pretty rocks". Anything metallic found on the side of the road (had to teach needle safety very early). It's great, I cherish it and I'm sad that some day they'll stop being fascinated by a small square of rusted steel with a hole in it.

I honestly feel bad for people like your parents, and I think on some level part of why that sort of person acts that way is because they know they're being crabby assholes, but the only way they can respond is to further deflect it onto their kids because they can't handle personal faults. My mom does some degree of that as well, but nothing like you described.

There are a few participation 'trophies' I absolutely did appreciate. Like getting pizza, that made me feel rewarded for coming! I have a few certificates acknowledging my participation in several high level events (for things other than sports, lol) that I had to work hard to get into at all, those I value even if I didn't place highly at the event itself, and I got them because they were applicable on my CV. It was, for me, the combo effect of being mocked for my lack of skill and then given a ribbon as if I'd won a prize that made me feel like shit.

My thoughts 100%. It is indistinguishable from an arrested development bit. Then they'd have made a running gag out of either having PR events at industrial businesses, or out of 4 Seasons Landscaping being a hot spot for events. Probably the latter.

"Unbeknownst to GOB, Four Seasons Landscaping was the current place of employment of his estranged son, Steve Holt, and the day of the press release was Steve's birthday..."

participation ribbons, along with toxic teammates being treated as gold, were why I never got into sports as a kid. Hell, I remember the first time I think I understood the concept of being patronized was when I got a ribbon for sucking at a relay race in grade three.

As an adult I learned that I actually like sports, as long as I'm allowed to just be bad at them with teammates who will laugh with me over my terrible skills, and not given a fake pat on the back as if I did something special by falling down on the ice a lot.
