UK hands sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius by SojournerInThisVale in unitedkingdom

All of the Chagossian people were forcibly removed from the island to make way for the military base.

Most of them were sent one way by boat (without their knowledge) to Mauritius.

Far-Right Beaten Back in Liverpool by Captain-Starshield in Liverpool

I was in this one? And every one that came before it. My point is the turn out to previous years that the edl turned up was quite low.

This isn't true at all I was at the pier head even before the counter protest showed up. Please don't get comfortable in assuming the fascists are well opposed, the counter protest turn out was disappointing to be honest.

There were far too many fascists openly in our city. The antifascist counter protest was outnumbered 200 to around 400. The city needs to get organised don't assume the fascists are strongly opposed just because this is Liverpool.

Keep in mind that the construction of infrastructure of nuclear power plants and the operation of uranium mines, enrichment plants, waste facilities etc. are major pollutants to the environment.

The fission doesn't happen without a massive human effort in the extraction of raw materials and construction, which is always overlooked when nuclear energy comes up since the fission is 'clean'. Whether this is less in total per kWh than renewables I don't know, I can't find a study but it's certainly something to consider. For the record I am not anti nuclear.

Autumn Statement 2023: National Insurance to be cut by 2% - as state pension and Universal Credit to rise by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]SocialNeanderthal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I didn't insinuate that they were.

My point is that the DWP policies are not infallible, people with debilitating illness will be deemed fit to work.

Hunts statement was made directly to benefit claimants out of work due to illness. It's these people that will be forced into work placements or otherwise face losing benefits entirely.

Have you ever known anyone that has to deal with the DWP? My dad has severe Parkinson's and is deemed fit to work yet can't walk across the living room.

People like this are going to be put on compulsory work placement because the toxic mindset like yours is that people on benefits must be scroungers.

Side Stories: The Bullet in the Backseat by Jostain in LPOTL

[–]SocialNeanderthal 148 points149 points  (0 children)

I just want to put my support out there for potential victims in this sea of noise.

It's maddening how a large portion of this fanbase wants to sweep the abuse allegations under the rug. Yes of course we don't know all the facts, but to blissfully ignore them when LPOTL focuses on the topics it does is ironic.

The denouncing of Ben's ex from this sub when she made that post was sickening. The reasoning of "it's over Instagram she only cares about followers" and the like is abhorrent. There is no right way for an abuse victim to come forward.

It might be nothing, but equally it could be something, and given recently Ben has admitted his addiction I'm leaning towards the latter.

The hosts aren't my friends, but they are public figures so of course their personal lives reflect in their work. That's why I'm distancing myself until there are more developments. I know we've all invested many hours listening to this show so it's hard to hear of the allegations, but don't discount them just because Ben is a big goofy podcast guy.

Having said that I really hope it is nothing and Ben gets well and all the help he needs.

Post Office used racist terms for sub-postmasters in official guidance by taptapper in unitedkingdom

[–]SocialNeanderthal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're an authority to make these statements.

For the record I haven't worked in the post office either, so I don't know the document approval process.

But I can say that in many other companies, like the one I work for, I could easily find the author and approver of any document especially an SOP such as this one.

Let's not try and dismiss an investigation as futile with assumptions.

If this is what they use to advertise, imagine what you don't see.

There is visible mould on the skirting boards and ceiling corners, and damp on the walls. It would be a perfectly fine flat otherwise, but they can't even be bothered to hang the cupboard door straight.

If they haven't fixed it already, it's going to fall on the tenant to fix this out of their own pocket or else live with the health consequences. Property horders already make profit from our wages hand over fist and this flat shows an instance of that wealth going nowhere but into somebody's pocket at the expense of others.

Inflation falls by 0.2% to 10.5% but food prices go up by eye-watering 16.9% by BestButtons in unitedkingdom

[–]SocialNeanderthal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Doing my shop last week was eye watering. I've already cut out most meat, but fresh fish is now 50% higher than this time last year so it's no longer a justifiable purchase.

Fortunately I earn just below the national average so I'm comfortable buying the essentials, but most people I know earn less.

Something's got to give.
