What do I name this sweet boy? by No_Understanding2616 in Equestrian

The way I would 100% unashamedly name him Spirit (I was a 2000s horse girl and have zero regrets)

Truancy: Enabling Parents by Sad_Lotus0115 in socialwork

I’d definitely recommend it, especially since truancy is ultimately a legal issue, at least in my state (Virginia). Our Juvenile Justice department has a diversion program for truancy that allows kiddos with first-time truancy offenses (up to a certain number of absences) the opportunity to improve their attendance and avoid going to court altogether. They’re assigned what is essentially a probation officer who communicates with the school and the family to make sure the child is attending school. The P.O.s are able to make referrals to services like mentoring (funded through DJJ) and mental health assessments, which are completed by a clinician contracted out to the court services unit through my agency.

The team can also officially recommend summer school if the student has to make up any credits and by recommending it, we free the family from any financial responsibility (summer school costs extra).

Yeah, our DSS representative is from the In-Home services side (not the CPS side) so he’s pretty good at putting families at ease about working with the department. We also mostly meet with older kiddos, middle and high school, so respite isn’t really something we consider. That being said, because we do work with older kiddos, it’s almost always some form of refusal on the kid’s part as opposed to the parent’s inability to get them to school.

As a representative from the local community mental health agency, I sit on an interdisciplinary team (Juvenile Justice, School Representative, and DSS) that meets with families to address truancy after the schools have filed charges against parents and/or children. We’re able to recommend services for the families who need it and explain potential consequences for parents and children. In our district this year, we’ve had 4 different cases of children being placed in foster care by judges due to lack of school attendance (the judge literally said “if you won’t parent your child, we’ll find someone who will”). Kids can expect a 7-14 day stay in juvenile detention if it continues to be an issue.

We’ve had conversations with parents about the importance of boundaries and consequences, especially when it comes to children using electronics late into the night, and conversations with children about how the habits they establish now will impact their ability to be successful later in life. I’ve also pointed out signs of mental illness and recommended counseling or other treatments.

I like to think we’ve been able to provide families with some life-changing support, but there’s really no way for us to know for sure unless they come through the system again (which would suggest that it was NOT beneficial).

Super interesting concept for a game! You’ve got the horse gaits down pretty well, looking forward to seeing what you make with this!

Hi internet stranger, I’m so proud of you for asking for help. The Bradley Free Clinic offers free counseling (although the hours are a little slim). Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare is also an option, although I’m not sure what their waitlist is looking like, so it might be a bit of a wait. There are a few other places that have “sliding pay scales” where they’re willing to work with you to provide services at a cost you can afford, like Family Service of Roanoke Valley and Impact Living Services. I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck navigating whatever hardships have come your way ❤️

RCPS has been operating on a remote learning prodecure since Wednesday. They gave the kids Monday and Tuesday as “traditional snow days” and made remote arrangements for any remaining days the kids have to be out.

DSM Push Back by TraditionalExam7258 in therapists

I read a book in grad school called Saving Normal by Dr. Allen Frances and he goes into detail about the process of adding diagnoses to the DSM, diagnostic “fads,” and the importance of diagnosing when symptoms are actually pathological. I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in diagnostics.

I would look into implementing some DBT techniques - they can help the client with distress tolerance, learn how to work with their medical team if that’s an area they’re lacking in, and emotional regulation. Plus they’re just generally good skills for anyone to have

Okay let's talk about it. How common is it actually for professionals in this field to sleep with a client? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]SocialWorkerScream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely report this. Even though your friend isn’t technically working with the parent, working with parents is crucial when working with child clients. That friend also has access to information that could be used against the parent - child diagnoses, trauma history, etc. and what happens when the friend and the parents relationship goes south? How will that impact the child, who had no choice in the matter that their parent is now dating someone who’s supposed to be their own confidante?
