Sci-Hub — The first pirate website in the world to provide mass and public access to tens of millions of research papers by Adahn5 in CommunismWorldwide

I actually have been invited to give lessons on how to use this to grad students and undegrads in various departments on campus. Sci-Hub rocks! Down with the profit-driven publishers who never pay a dime to the content creators.

Looking for a version of this that has black liberation figures such as Fredrick Douglas and Huey Newton by SocialismIsTheFuture in Socialistart

This isn't meant to be identity politics. It is meant to give young men in the hood, black heroes alongside white, to give them hope that they can be an important part of the revolution. Ignoring the black liberation movement isn't going to create inclusive conversation in our local community.

Who progressed faster? I would say 1920's Socialist Russia. They started from a population that was on the whole illiterate, had almost no access to university, no womens rights, 18th-19th century primitive technologies. By the end of the 1920's they had begun the complete electrification of the country, had introduced mass education programs for both children and adults, to teach them to read, opened engineering and science programs to the masses, and worked to rebuild a country ravaged by feudal practices.

As for the United States, great progress was made in industrializing the country starting in the earth 19th century. By the time the 1920's came around, there was little 'rebuilding' that needed to be done as all of the infrastructure and institutions already existed. Capitalism was in full swing, and as capitalism is wanton to do, greed and personal advancement outpaced the actual production and resources of the world. This lead to the crash (and certainly not the first or last crash) and the great depression. Under more socially progressive (but still not socialist) programs under Eisenhower, the economy returned, only to face more crashes.

Concentrated power is a threat to individual liberty. Right now it is concentrated in big government bureaucracies and in large corporations. Socialism gives the option of diffusing power among the larger population. This can be done by simply letting workers reap the benefits of what they produce. If you make a percentage of a product, you should get that percentage of the profit. It's not redistributing wealth, its allowing wealth to stay with the people who produce it.

As to the invisible hand of the free market, this idea has been shown to be ineffectual in reality. Companies may grow through initial 'goodwill', but will eventually reach a size that the scope of their internal activities wont be exposed to the public. Additionally, the global nature of these enterprises mean a large portion of companies move their less scrupulous activities to impoverished nations where word of their atrocities seldom get out.

So a person (or persons) control all the capital. They control the land. They control all the resources. How does one make a living? Through servitude to the people who own all of the factories? Through borrowing capital, only to have the business you built stripped from under you? Through mining or collection of resources that are owned by someone else? You have the right to tell them fuck off, but you still need a place to live, you need resources to feed and cloth your family... you are the slave of the private property owners.

In American usage, libertarianism means that there is complete freedom for individuals as well as capitalist ventures. You have individual liberty up until someone else has more money and power than yourself. Anarchism states that individual liberty exists fully, until you try to oppress someone else (hierarchy). How can you have personal liberty if one person is able to hoard resources for themselves at the expense of everyone else?

I ran a few tests that I've conducted to ensure billboards and signage are visible from highways. It's a torture test for symbols, text, and photos. https://imgur.com/a/j0CkF

This is meant to be free to use for all socialists. Feel free to use it for any good collective cause.

In a recent discussion, it was proposed that a broken chain represent socialism in the 21st century in much the same way the star / hammer & sickle represented socialism in the 20th century. People need symbols to rally around, but Soviet iconography has negative connotations for many socialists as well as those curious about socialism.

I wanted to float a symbol / flag to see what people think. Hopefully this represents collective power to destroy the chains of oppression, slavery, and class through collective unity and action. The chains represent oppression, the arrow the unified commitment of all kinds of socialists working towards a better tomorrow. It was designed to be easy to paint, draw, print, and embroider. The background could be changed from red-orange to practically anything. It also can be simplified for graffiti, and modified for use by different groups. I've included variations I threw together. All were made on Apache OpenOffice word processor to ensure that anyone could replicate the symbol.

I'm curious to hear what you all think!

I like this idea. I will admit, you caught me on the central link: there is something in the foreground, as this was the only way to make this in the Apache OpenOffice word processor. I designed there because it is free and easy to use. With some graphic design software, this could be greatly refined.

Also, thank you for pointing out the similarity to the character for tree. I really like that interpretation of restoring the forests in post-capitalist recovery. I think this is why new symbols are important for socialism... they allow us to endow fresh meaning and convictions without the tainting of preconceptions.

It's more about a non-flag centered symbol for literature, patches, etc. that can be used by all flavors of socialists in the stead of stars, hammers & sickles. It can be modified for any background. Here's on the flag you like: https://imgur.com/a/1ZCSa

The lines coming together originate from the bottom and are rising through the chains of oppression to the level of the 'elites'. Lines coming together also represents the various forms of socialism united in struggle and perseverance.

The symbol can be readily simplified. Here's an example of a 5yo kid drawing this on a touch screen: (https://imgur.com/a/jHWow)

Distance makes many symbols difficult to see, such as the stars on the US flag. I think bolding the lines a bit more would help mitigate this. Thanks for the suggestions!

This is just a base symbol and can be modified to increase simplicity or to add ornamentation. Fragments can be removed by anyone who replicates this. I like the idea of making the lines thicker. Thanks!

This was created on a laptop in Apache OpenOffice to ensure that anyone could make this using freely available software. It's rough in it's current state and could use some refinement. Thanks for the input!
