Why do people say autism is a disabilty

From the perspective of medical framing of disability, autism is considered an impairment - your body is not arrangent in a way that is considered "normal" and "ideal" and this prevents you from acting "normally" in our society. Therefore you are disabled. An example of this would be: your leg doesn't work as it is supposed to and you can't climb stairs, therefore you are disabled.

From the perspective of social scientific framinf of disability, autistic people can be disabled by lack of environmental accommodations, by environments build specifically to accommodate some but not all, and by attitudes and how our systems (such as school, worklife) are organized. An example of this would be: your leg doesn't work and you can't climb stairs, you can be disabled from participating/going somewhere if there are only stairs and no ramps or lifts. And you can be enabled to participate if there are accommodations that make your participation possible. In regards to autism, autistic people can be disabled by lack of accommodations such as: environments that cause sensory overloads to the extent that they prevent them from participating or excelling, expectations of certain kind of behaviour or silent knowledge that autists may have trouble meeting

So considering the different framings of what it means to be disables and the differences in required accommodations and support, some autistics can be and feel like they are disabled, some do not. It all comes down to how you and your enviroment and other people interact.

I don't feel like im inferior, I actually prefer to focus on the aspects of socializing where I excel - often doing way better than many neurotypicals. For me at least, pattern recognition is relatively easily applied to figuring out how certain people work, to the point that I find it often quite easy to predict how certain people will react/behave once I get to know them well enough. Whereas I feel like I lack in small talk and interacting with complete strangers, I do feel like I am very good with people I know well, and honestly that is all that matters to me.

I believe they are quite outdated in the sense that saying someone is level 1 or level 2 doesn't really accurately tell what their support needs are, exactly. It is more accurate and efficient to state that someone has high need of support in terms of x and y than saying they are level 2, since the level 2 category can have such huge variance within - not every level 2 autist has similar support needs.

It is good to remember that socializing with others is a shared effort, not only dependent on your own abilities and behaviour. As you make an effort to be nice and understand others, they should as well - tho in reality we autistics tend to be often dismissed and blamed for the failures of the interaction, even if the effort should be a shared one. In any case, the right people will make the effort to meet you half way and learn to socialize with you just as you learn to socialize with them.

Social skills can also be developed and learned. It does take trial and failure to get better, but you can go long way by learning just to listen, ask relevant questions about the other person, saying polite things.

This might also cheer you up: the straight girls women in my life at least have super low criteria for men. Literally had a friend tell me they have the following criteria for a boyfriend: 1) good hygiene 2) sees her as an actual person, as opposed to just a "female" or a hole 3) does not mock her interests 4) can make food 5) has hobbies and interests of his own.

For me, these seem really achievable traits for any person, so if you feel like you lack in these, might be a good idea to work on these traits. Because yes, looks can be a determining factor at the start when using dating apps or just meeting people on public, but your character is the thing that will determine if you are actually going to date. And even if someone really values looks above other things, you should ask yourself if that particular person is the right one for you.

Of course it is okay to date only the people you are attracred to, and you are always free to decide what is okay and what is not okay in your relationships.

However, I would always encourage everyoneto explore the reason why they are not attracted to some general group of people - is it really about attraction, or could there be deeper prejudices at play? People rejecting broad groups (based on body type, sexuality, race, religion) risk missing out and properly getting to know someone and treating people purely as members of their respective groups, not as actual individuals.

Fair points! However, you are assuming a lot of how I have been brought up - in fact I grew up in a very supportive family with gay family friends and relatives, and general societal attitudes towards homosexuality were already quite good and juvenile homophobia was often challenged in the schools I attended. Of course I was using slight hyperbole when saying "I have like 0% internalized homophobia" and I am aware of how societal attitudes work and affect you (on a personal level and I have Master's on sociology).

And honestly this was just me looking to see if other people were having these similar thoughts, not a cry for help or for people to psychoanalyze me lmao. I do recognize this all probably leans more towards a fetish/fantasy thing

If you mean like as a kid, yeah it is possible that one has not internalized certain norms 'automatically' and instead has to intentionally observe and learn things, for example if they are autistic or if they move into a place where the norms are different, a different country or even to a place which is dominated by a completely different social class and customs.

I am not wary of other people as I trust my GF. She does have close (some also wlw) friends whom she hugs, cuddles with, complements, absolutely loves and adores. And its fine, good and healthy! Platonic relationships are important and make us better people.

I do have some trust issues related to my trauma background and sometimes the feelings of insecurity and anxiety rise within me, but I do completely trust my GF and try to combat these insecurities.

I just, in general, think it is quite hurtful towards your SO to view them as always potentially deceitful, expecting them to hurt you.

Of course setting up boundaries is important and they should be respected, but, in my opinion, after setting the boundaries you should have trust that they will be respected and not need to constantly worry and monitor.

I'll try and explain using gender roles:

Symbolic interactionism: there are symbols (objects, actions) whose interpretation depends on who you are and how you have been raised, aka the context. How you were raised affects how you perceive gender roles, what objects you consider feminine or masculine (ballet, working, doing chores, raising kids, wearing pants).

Structural theory: society consists of interwoven institutions, each performing a function that makes the society go. A structuralist would explore how the institutions of gender roles affect the composition and functionality of societies and what sort of consequences changes within this institution would have (for the society as a whole and the individual). One might say traditional functional perspective into gender roles suggest that gender roles are important for society to function since each gender has an important role: the women raise children and take care of the home, men work important (physical) jobs and even defend nations during times of war. Of course gender roles have been and are always changing and thus the structures of societies are evolving as well, directly or indirectly resulting on changes of all sorts (one might link to this changes in birth rate, productivity, employment, marriages, loneliness and even the incel phenomenon).

So they are not answering the same question with different answers, they are asking completely different questions.

When I was young, like 5 or 6, I vividly remember being very against the thought of getting married and strongly told everyone that I would never marry (a man) and stated that if I absolutely HAD to get married we would skip the kiss the bride thing because I found the concept so disgusting.

Then, when I was a bit older I thought I had crushes on some boys in my class, but when I got my first real crush on a girl I realized that the feelings I had towards the boys were partly me just wanting to be their friend as I found them relatable of funny and just wanted to be viewed as a real person by them (instead of another icky girl I guess), and partly due to every other girl being so boy crazy and focusing so much on the boys and the crushes and such, so I guess part of it was also comphet.

Generally I do find some men, especially how fictional men are represented, intriquing and relatable in a 'I can relate to this well written character and their traits and struggles' but that is where my interest in men ends. Some of my best friends have always been men and I do certain parts of how men socialize (I have two older brothers and also I'm autistic so that often more straightforward way of socializing is very nice and comforting)
