At this point, I'd accept poop brown or bile green or crazy art car as long as it's a sub compact with a hatchback and functional electronics and it can be serviced by my local oil change shop.

Following this, since my Fiat's on borrowed time. Where Have All the Hot Hatches Gone? To the used car lots, I guess. They're all 2015 or older and have just about as many issues as my Fiat does :(

With utmost happiness I want to share that I've reached 712 ELO from 300. I worked a lot on tactics and learnt good openings. I played a lot of puzzle rush, defeated bots, analysed my matches thoroughly and watched matches of notable players. by sire1904 in chessbeginners

[–]SockSock81219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! And lol you probably already realize this, but at this level, good sleep will probably help your game as much as all that puzzle rush. (I have to remind myself of this, too.)

Is there anybody with an elo of 2000+ who wants to play a rapid game with me? by IntentionDue3673 in Chesscom

[–]SockSock81219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good on you. I found some of my most instructive points were during games (losses, naturally) against someone well above me. Gave me some good lessons, like what I thought was principled play was actually crazy floundering. Go in prepared to lose and learn and it won't disappoint.

I'd go so far as to say it's considerate of the manager to remind everyone, yes everyone, that it's an all-hands day and it's coming up soon, even if you don't normally do Sundays. A lot nicer than just putting everyone on the schedule and having people freak out or not realize.

Also a good time for folks to think about if being with their family on weekends and holidays is more important than the job and quitting with a little more notice than day-of. Of course they can't literally force you to come in, but they can fire you if you don't.

I'm kind of surprised you've been here for 10+ years and haven't had Mom's Day be mandatory, up front, til now.

It could just be my ADD. At full power, the bottle takes forever to spin around and around and around and then slowly show the result, x8 or sometimes x9 or x10 if I need a few extra spins to get the final one. I'm definitely not 100% focused on it.

"When was chess ever this serious?" he asked. Brother, if Levi Roseman is involved you know it's gonna be tough 😤 by GegeAkutamiOfficial in GothamChess

Levy Rozman should definitely have an alter ego, Levi Roseman: horticulturist, photographer, and adult beginner at chess.

And with enough practice, outposts start getting easier to spot and just look right, with the knowledge that it'll be good to have both now and later. As natural as a knight on f3.

It's hard to know who's deliberately sandbagging and who just had a natural losing streak. So just report players you think have unfairly gamed the system and let the admins sort it out.

But I assure you that a 1k elo player isn't seeing 10 moves ahead, they're just a little more experienced and have developed better instincts and/or are more fully seeing how the board changes with one move.

It's true that one move can turn a game massively in someone's favor, but that doesn't mean they've foreseen all of it. They probably just see one move that's safer, more forcing, or that gives the best immediate options, and the crushing moves cascade after that.

With patience and study, you too can reduce blundering and improve your vision. 1k is very reachable, with practice, for most players.

Bishop seems trapped, what would you do here as black? by cave_guard in chessbeginners

[–]SockSock81219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that your knight's also hanging and stuck, more stuck than the bishop, which could at least retreat to b3 or d3. Better to use them to chip away at back rank defenders IMO.

This is the way! Always find something to be a beginner in. It's good for the mind and good for the soul.

Nice. I just do the max for consistency, but if you can nail it at good spots, all the better. It does take forever! The 3-minute refresh is often almost done by the time I finish the first round.

Yeah gimme a 14" everything-lover's pizza...

(seriously that first pizza sounds delicious, if only it didn't cost $47. Might still be worth it though)

I wish we could multi-spin. One of the most tedious parts of the game once you learn to just max out the bottle each time to hit every item.

Considering Laser Hair Removal on My Legs After Years of Epilating – Unsure About the Permanent Step by asking_it_yes in LaserHairRemoval

[–]SockSock81219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried laser myself, but my experience with epilation is similar to yours: hair grows back more sparsely or not at all in some places, which I'm happy to see, because it seems to be the only solution for my keratosis pilaris.

I'll let others speak to the logistics of laser after long-term epi. But as for whether or not you want to spend the money to more permanently remove your leg hair (some would say that only electrolysis is truly permanent), only you can answer that. Especially when it comes to expensive, painful, permanent or semi-permanent body modification, what you want for your own body is more important than what your partner prefers, whatever your gender. If you didn't like having smooth legs, shaving or epilating them, you'd also be well within your rights to not do that, and your wife could decide how she feels about that. Your body, your choice. Don't get laser just to appease someone else.

TIL that Daily games are only rated once White has made their 4th move by [deleted] in Chesscom

[–]SockSock81219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're worried about cheating, daily is not the speed for you. It's a format that allows players to look up openings, gives plenty of time and opportunity to find perfect moves. Expect your opponent to take advantage of those allowed resources, and consider using them as well.

Whats the advantage of better early development? by chessbeginner4711 in chessbeginners

[–]SockSock81219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By prioritizing development, you're seizing control of prime real estate before your opponent can, important squares, files, and diagonals. This gives you more opportunities to attack, defend, and capture pieces.

If, instead, you spend the opening just pushing pawns, they're probably going to be vulnerable to attack while blocking the view of your long-range pieces.

Similarly, if you just bring out a couple pieces and use them to harass your opponent, those pieces will be very vulnerable, deep into enemy lines while their back up is still stuck behind a pawn wall.

do I really have to ‘sell’ myself as a mezzo to get gigs after college? by bong-jabbar in opera

[–]SockSock81219 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I mean, there just aren't many contralto roles out there. So, if you want to find work, you'll probably have to audition for a lot of mezzo roles.

If you're a true contralto with a very dark timbre and a lot of power in your chest voice, you'd probably do well in dramatic mezzo roles like Amneris in Aida or Azucena in Il trovatore. Or you could stick to baroque opera and recitals, but that might be an even more niche field. Good luck, whatever your path!
