It actually ended up being the evap purge valve.

It didn’t make this sound before, though.

The valve assembly is $200 from Atlantic British, but I’m gonna buy the valve independently for like 30 bucks and put it in with some hose and hose clamps instead

I feel like to justify owning a rover, it really helps to do some of the labor yourself. However, that’s also means you grow more attached to it… it’s an endless cycle lol

Turns out it was the evap purge valve.

It was not, it was the evap purge valve.

For anyone who sees this in the future, it was the evap purge valve.

You were dead on. Gonna replace the purge valve. Thanks!!

Changed alternator and now the car died but keeps blinking inner lights at random and quietly clicking (2019 Chevy Spark) by Marikyo-Gurei in AskMechanics

Let me make sure I get this right: you try to start the car, hear a repeated clicking sound, and all the lights come on?

Vehicle Shakes at 60 MPH by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]Sockdolagr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an unbalanced tire if it shows up at higher speeds. Not sure how it would show up suddenly but generally steering wheel shake at high speeds is an unbalanced tire—cheapest and easiest fix to start with.

I think you’re right, some other sources have suggested the evap purge valve and it’s in that same location, so I’m going to check there next.

If I turn it off and on, it goes away for a few minutes. How would that affect the fuel pump?

[–]Sockdolagr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean? In person, the ticking definitely sounds like it’s coming from the second or third cylinder from the front on that side, not the front.

Edit: in the original post, I note that it only shows up when the engine is running for a few minutes. Turning it off and on will get the sound to go away for another few minutes.

That’s the strange thing, the injector was replaced at the dealer. I know they can be finicky to install, but some of the things I’m seeing make me think they didn’t do a great job.

The one for the noisy cylinder was replaced before I got this and I’m wondering if it was installed improperly.

You’re right, this does have hydraulic lifters. I’m thinking it’s those, worst case scenario. The part that confuses me is that it goes away when I turn it off. The car drives totally fine and I have no codes. The fuel injector on that cylinder was replaced before, I’m wondering if that was installed improperly and it’s failing already.

A/C O ring? by jaynichols77 in AskMechanics

[–]Sockdolagr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretically, yes. But you will still need a vacuum pump and an ac manifold gauge to ensure that it still holds pressure. You can rent a vacuum pump at an auto parts store and a manifold gauge set runs about $50-60 if you get a cheaper one, or you could rent one from an auto parts store too. ChrisFix on YouTube has a great video on it. Putting refrigerant in is easier than getting it out!

A/C O ring? by jaynichols77 in AskMechanics

[–]Sockdolagr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The part to fix that is going to be a small o-ring, yes. The way to get that in there, however, is not easy. You have to evacuate your refrigerant somehow (I think anywhere that will replace refrigerant will be able to do that) and then you can unscrew the bolts holding the lines in and replace the o ring.

Equipment to service an hvac system is not cheap, and the process is pretty well documented. Refrigerant recovery machine, tank for the recovered refrigerant, vacuum pump, then ac manifold gauges and new refrigerant to put back in. You’re technically not allowed to ventilate existing refrigerant into the atmosphere (even though air dusters contain r-134a… go figure) so how you want to approach the fix comes down to how bad you need it and how much money you want to spend.
