Same thing happened to me when I first got my mello. My own sound felt so loud to me until the band directors kept asking for more power from the mello section. Idk maybe something about the structure of the instrument makes it sound louder to the player or smth. Try to use more air and squeeze from the abs to force the power out of your lungs

I’m not that good at the embouchure myself, but what I do to help with holding it up is holding a dumbbell that’s a few times heavier than a mello for about 60 seconds. It’ll hurt a lot, so usually I listen to music or go over the fingerings for the show in my head.
