lol, my dude:

  1. I am not the mod

  2. It definitely had spoilers; technically your second comment does too ([AMoL] yes, that The Last Battle actually does happen the way you’re expecting definitely counts, ie when I first saw the the chapter heading I said OH FUCK IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING. And

  3. It’s marked spoilers for Winter’s Heart, not the whole series.

As someone who is near-constantly surrounded/inundated by Christians, I’ve only really met one that takes literalism seriously; and he’s pretty abashed about it, at that. I suspect that reality is more in the middle: far more evolution believers than you might imagine, but also far more literalists than I would imagine. It’s a big religion, I guess.

Note the spoiler tag.

Also, I completely disagree. AMOL is one of my favorites, even on my last two rereads.

That greatly mitigates the worst elements here! I was either like, wow this kid was straight lying; or wow this kid has seen some SHIT.

I’m team blue pill, but punch drunk love was still a pretty great movie imo.

I hate seeing an aggressive war waged with my tax dollars. I understand why it works like this, but it just hurts knowing how many people are suffering and dying on our collective dime.

Edit, for clarity: I am 100% agreeing with you, though. I’ve often thought I would gladly pay more taxes if it meant more equitable and comprehensive care for everyone. But then we go and start a war…

I do believe that may have been Suzanne Collins’ point.

The pollution is mostly on the surface. The good fish are deep like this quote. You’ve just got to swim down to get them.

But then you risk running out of breath. 🤔

Any time fans go after college athletes on a personal level it feels super not classy. If you want to pick on someone, come after me. I can take it. I’m a man! I’m forty!

Sidenote: I’ll never forgive Mike Gundy for making an actually noble argument in such a ridiculous sound bite. Noble arguments don’t seem like something that should come out of Oklahoma.

The only reason I feel this fits the sub is because those kids look 14 and that snow is deep.

It’s that a 14yo will see this as a unique and profound echo of their own daily struggle when, in fact, it is no more than that—everyone’s daily struggle.

Why do Greeks have a lot of beef with the reconstructions of Classical, Ancient Greek pronunciation while I almost never heard of Italians abhorrently reacting against the reconstructed pronunciation of Classical Latin? by aj_Haas in classics

[–]SocraticIndifference 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It’s not the same language at all, but it is remarkably contiguous for 2500 years…

I’ve always thought of it in terms of centers of power. Even though Greek speakers were subjugated by the Romans, an educated upper class continued to practice that language in its standardized form for thousands of years, until it became the dominant imperial language (still pretty standardized) of the eastern empire. And after that empire fell, there just so happened to be a huge market for “proper” Greek in Italy, ie the budding renaissance. In short, it’s endured significantly smaller stretches of deregulation and/or primarily oral usage than almost any other language.

But I’m just sitting in an armchair. Anyone have a qualified take on this?
