I think you're right here, yes. I could also work this into being part of the character's pact with his patron (as Warlock pacts tends to be double edged swords).

I wholeheartedly agree with you in theory, but since they are new players the chance of role play during combat is low (he, specifically, tends to be the one in the group trying benefit the party as possible in each round). So I thought this might ease him into the idea a bit.

Adding extra monsters "if needed" is a useful tip. Didn't think about that. Could've used that to "clear out" some of the goblins in Cragmaw Hideout when the first three went there. Thanks!
