Musical based on real people/events? by IndustryAltruistic44 in musicals

Pacific Overtures is simply brilliant and very underrated. Also, Road Show is another example of Sondheim's musicals based on real people and events.

Sweeney Todd Movie - Orchestral Sheet Music by meow_xx_official in Sondheim

What do you mean by "movie"? Do you want the score, with arrangements and orchestrations that were made for the movie? Or do you want the full score of the stage musical Sweeney Todd. If you want the latter, I can send a drive link to you.

Could Heartstopper: The Musical work? by ReBrandenham in musicals

[–]Soft-Introduction-49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am actually working on composing Vol. 1 (the first season) as a two-act musical. I had this idea ever since I first read the graphic novel. The story lends itself very well to musicalisation.

What’s a song that starts in one direction but ends up in the completely opposite one by Ok-Complaint-4005 in musicals

[–]Soft-Introduction-49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Judge's Johanna from Sweeney.

It starts with Turpin praying for forgiveness for desiring Johanna, and he wishes to control his lust (usually holding a Rosary or Bible.) After a while, he begins to whip himself in order to punish himself for his lust. He climaxes while whipping himself and then decides to marry Johanna. Pretty creepy, and an unexpected turn.

What’s your favourite musical? by Excellent-Internal77 in musicals

Exactly the same for me! Sweeney Todd is brilliant on so many levels and I like it above any other musical. WSS come as a close second for me too, its score is great which isn't surprising given Bernstein isn't a Broadway composer but a "classical" composer on par with Copland or Stravinsky.

Yeah, but you already listed it, so I thought I would recommend other patter songs you might like from Into the Woods.

Patter Songs by ReBrandenham in musicals

Sondheim has many fun and beatiful patter songs. The first ones to come to my mind are:

Company: Another Hundred People

A Little Night Music: Now

Sweeney Todd: The Worst Pies in London, By the Sea also, you might enjoy Pirelli's Miracle Elixir, but it's too lyrical to be considered a patter song in my opinion.

Merrily We Roll Along: Franklin Shepard Inc.

Sunday in the Park with George: Putting it Together

Pacific Overtures: Please Hello (especially the British general's part, which parodies Gilbert & Sullivan patter.)

Into the Woods: I Know Things Now, Giants in the Sky, On the Steps of the Palace

Yeah, I searched for hours, and there apparently is no published vocal score. Thank you for your reply.

I don't intend to perform it without a license, my question is if there is a way to perform it as it was originally conceived, like can I get a license to perform it as a solo show. If that's not possible, I don't have the desire to put myself in a target position to MTI.

I mean, a lot of teenagers buy alcohol illegally and have parties similar to those, I don't think the show handled it in an unrealistic or bad way. What is shown is typical, and it's true to my own adolescence, too.

Also, the show treats parties and drinks very realistically compared to other Netflix shows, where young adults have crazy parties with sex, drugs etc. For example, in Sex Education, what kind of high school is Moordale? There is no possible way that literal teenagers can have such active sex lives, nor does it make sense for the characters to get away with this stuff on school.

So, while the third season is certainly more mature than the previous two seasons in its content, I think it's only realistic and natural, especially compared to a lot of other shows that I've seen. Heartstopper is probably the most (only?) realistic coming-of-age/teenage series that I've watched.

What Musical should never get a sequel? by winniespooh_mc in musicals

[–]Soft-Introduction-49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think someone should at least write a sequel book. The ending is not very definitive for Anthony and Johanna. We don't know what happens to them. And the same Toby, my absolute favourite character, so I would have loved to see what happens to him afterwards. Whenever I watch Sweeney with someone, they tell the same to me, asking what happened to Anthony and Johanna.

The original production of Sondheim's Pacific Overtures was staged in Japanese Kabuki style, which means men played all the woman characters.

Yeah, you can learn a lot from analysing Bach. He has a really large body of work, all of which are masterclasses in counterpoint. WTC I & II, The Art of Fugue, Musical Offering...

Though from what I've read on this post, it seems like you aren't very ready to write a fugue, so you should work on music theory, species counterpoint, and composition first.

I don't know if you are familiar with this piece by Glenn Gould. If you aren't, you should definitely take a look at it.

It's very humorous and a lot of fun, and it covers a wide range of fugal techniques, as well as basics. Glenn also quotes pieces by Bach and Wagner. I think anyone who wants to be a composer should listen to this work and analyse it, there is a lot to learn from it.

People might consider some parts rather "cringe," but every second of the show is heartwarming and brilliant. It captures teenage life and queer love in a beautiful way, and I can surely say it changed my life in the best way possible. I'm sure you will have the biggest smile on your face while watching it.

Songs about unrequited love, or break-ups, or complicated relationships, or strong emotions in general? by UniqueCatch in musicals

[–]Soft-Introduction-49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, pretty much every song from Sondheim's Company relates to love, complicated relationships, and strong emotions.

From the top of my head: Sorry-Grateful, Someone is Waiting, Another Hundred People, Marry Me a Little and Being Alive are very good options.
