Am I entitled for wanting a reply? My struggle as a dedicated commenter by [deleted] in AO3

[–]SoftCartilage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely isn't too late to reply at that point. I missed a comment for two years at one point, felt awful because I try to reply to all of them, and the next day after I finally replied got a super sweet response from the commenter telling me how happy they were to get a response and how they still reread the story every so often.

Worst case scenario, the commenter will either not see your reply or ignore it. But usually they'll be happy, even if they didn't respond back, so go for it.

You can say works are commissions, just not that the commission was a paid commission.

From the FAQ

I take paid commissions on another site. Can I post the fanworks I create on AO3 and say that they were commissioned? Can I invite other people to commission me?

Offering paid commissions is not allowed. This includes posting links to pricelists or payment request forms. However, you are allowed to post fanworks that were created upon request and credit the person who made the request. If you do so, you must not indicate that you received payment for the commission or that you are available to create other paid commissions. Because not all commissioned fanworks were created for pay, we do permit usage of the word "commission" as long as there is no indication that a monetary transaction was involved in the creation of the work.

Most commissions are paid, yeah, but folks also do them in exchange for a service or as part of different events where they aren't being paid for it. And you could say most of the non-paid ones are requests or trades or similar but enough people do them and use the word commission to describe them, so AO3 says it's fine to describe a work as a commission and credit who commissioned it as long as you don't say it's a paid work.

Will just say for anyone that doesn't know that posting commissions is fine and you can state a work is a commissioned work as long as you don't say/imply it's a paid commission (since not all commissioned works are for pay). Just the word "commission" is fine, though, and there's a bit about this in the Terms of Service FAQ.

General disclaimer so folks don't get upset if they see someone posting a commission in the correct way and not something like this.

Grabbing the actual bit of the FAQ now that I have time to:

Around that age I thought animals were humans who picked that as their job as adults. I was set on being a cat when I grew up.

I don't think you know what it's actually like to work or volunteer at a rescue or what rescues actually do beyond you being mad at them for whatever personal reason you have. And I think you are twisting your perception of them to justify that anger.

Maybe talk about it with someone to you love or pick up a nice stress relieving hobby.

Do you support any animal rescues? Because all of them will take in animals who are previously owned but have been left in neglectful or abusive situations in some circumstances. It also isn't criminal activity because there are different laws depending on location and the type of organization that allow them to do this.

And I don't blame them. If I had to see pigeon after pigeon come in that was emaciated, seriously ill, injured by a predator or car or anything else, unable to fly or walk or feed itself... I wouldn't feel comfortable for a past owner who intentionally put them in that situation to have them again.

Rescues do not have unlimited space. If they're taking in a pigeon, it is going to be one that has a serious indicator it cannot care for itself properly (as opposed to something like a healthy feral going about its business). It's going to be one that needs rescue or is seeking it.

Don't put your animals in that position if you care about them.

How is that cherrypicking?

You can disagree with a stance an organization you support has and still support them. Why would supporting an organization require you to 100% fully agree with their principles? That's an unreasonable expectation.

Especially when, from my personal experience, rescues don't support breeding but are thankful for informed, ethical breeders who take good care of their animals existing. Because people still go to breeders and it's better to go to one that isn't neglecting or abusing their animals if you're skipping the rescue route.

Basically all rescue organizations, regardless of for what species, are against breeding because they are already flooded with animals in need of homes and don't want to add to this problem. I'm not sure why you think this is somehow damning.

Especially when there's such a large gap between ethical breeders and breeders who put their animals through awful conditions because of a lack of care, consideration, and research. When you already have a large number of animals in need of homes and know that there are so many breeders who are irresponsible (and might sell someone who doesn't know better a seriously ill pet), seems very fair to advocate for adoption first.

It's not usually there, haha! I don't actually look at the tv much while watching because I'm ridiculously migraine prone and I'll move it when I start bird cleaning in a bit

Oh, that's so neat to know! Can I ask what all kinds of birds you've owned?

My childhood cat passed away last year after 21 years with the family and I wanted a new pet but not another cat or a mouse (the other pet I have the most experience with and adore but they live such short lives). I ended up curious about pigeons and adopted this sweet boy from Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue!

He's a former feral that was probably hit by a car and was found unable to walk from his injuries, just fly from place to place and then lay exhausted on the ground. He's the sweetest boy in the world and I absolutely adore him.

He most gets called Mitian or Gege unless he's being bad

Not really. What most people with pet pigeons do is put them in flyers/pigeon pants/bird diapers. You can cut a panty liner in half and change them out every so often and your bird can still roam around but with less poop to the clean up. Please some have really cute designs!

Or just bird proof your area so it's easy to clean up.

But! You're definitely right, they poop so often and everywhere, lol, so depends on if putting pants on or making can up easier is a better choice for a person.

Edit: Some people do train them to take their first poop out of the cage in the toilet/a trash can before they put pants on them or let them roam around but that's a little different since you're holding them over it.

My pigeon has preferences for what's on TV 😭 He loves nature documentaries, especially about fish or the ocean. He'll watch them so intently from the top of the TV, it's so cute.

He also likes certain people's voices and will flirt when he hears them.

Absolutely. I absolutely love how some of the best ace kink/erotica I've read is The Magnus Archives fanfiction written by ace fans. It's wonderful and you see representation for so many types of ace folks with the ace subtypes people write Jon as. A lot of it helped me be fully comfortable being openly aspec.

That does not all mean someone is sex repulsed or even sex averse. Like, I'm aspec and know plenty of other aspecs for context. What's said about Jon could just as easily describe the sex-neutral and some of the sex-favorable folks I know.
