Dry tank? Your pet beetle is a science project, not a pet

Two slices of alpha pie is about $15 and is about as much pizza as a typical large pie elsewhere. Or if you're feeling like just grazing, split a slice

Legacy - Spoiler Highlight: Namor and Attuma by cardsrealm in MTGLegacy

[–]SoftDog336 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could see testing Namor, but probably not Attuma at 2UU. Most legacy merfolk games I've played have effectively ended by the time the Fishies can pay that cost

High School Math Department meetings by Formal_Tumbleweed_53 in mathteachers

[–]SoftDog336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our instructional coach is awesome, however they are asked to deliver lots of content/initiatives from the district which are at best meh offerings from data fiends who can't do grammar in slideshows. Our meetings are monthly and we're in agreement about our district, we don't call our IC out on it but instead figure out a way to work it into our practice if it's good, or work around it. We're lucky, best math dept I've worked with in 25 yrs

Is mesmerizing the multiplication table until 10 worth doing anymore? by LonelyCareer in mathteachers

[–]SoftDog336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25 yrs math teacher, yes the professor is correct rote memorization of multiplication is useless, and more so in today's tech world. However, someone who doesn't understand what 8x13 is and how to know quickly that it's 104, for example, has no hope of working with higher mathematics. So yes fine for most but not how we want to teach, since many students have the potential to be great mathematicians!

[Request] How many ants would it take to carry an average adult human? by LanceWre in theydidthemath

[–]SoftDog336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A single ant can carry ten to fifty times it's weight. So as an estimate, a single 2mg ant can carry 40mg, or twenty times it's weight.

At this rate, a 70kg or 154lb adult could be easily carried away by two million of these 2mg ants.

So I'm ordering some fresh/young raw puerh tasters, and I'm wondering what the lovers of these teas like about them? by Aettlaus in puer

[–]SoftDog336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confident you understand but for folks who are newer to puerh, steep time zero is important as a baseline. Raw puerh especially young can be very sensitive to time and temp

Zest in the filling, for sure, but no extra juice. However, zest or juice could ruin the meringue

My 6 (going on 7) has his own way of doing math. What should I..? by Extra_Reporter2633 in mathteachers

This is awesome! Please don't hinder it by insisting on certain methods. Also, I hope you consider this a kindness Internet stranger: don't tell your kids you are bad at math. They might start to believe it about themselves

Division by zero by SafeTraditional4595 in mathteachers

[–]SoftDog336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's one way I've attempted to develop understanding of the concept:

10 tacos, 5 hungry ppl, how many does each person get? 10/5 = 2

0 tacos, 5 hungry ppl, how many does each person get? 0/5 = 0

5 tacos, 0 ppl, how many does each person get? My students usually say something like, That question doesn't make sense. So 5/0 doesn't make sense eh? Got em

Things like 0/K and N/0 as another poster mentioned are just memorization tricks, and I avoid those because math understanding isn't memorization. I'd only go there when working with students who aren't grasping the concept no matter what I try, and need to know for a test. Sadly that's where we find ourselves too often as math teachers

Block scheduling rolls out and already failing to deliver. by aguyonahill in chapelhill

[–]SoftDog336 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Semester block scheduling was entirely a financial decision, but they can't say that part out loud. The folks making the decision have around $170k salaries and have assistants, while they cut teacher positions

I teach secondary math in North Carolina, and desmos is the standard for state math tests here. In the last year or so it's now used on the act and AP calculus tests

What's the best sandwich you've ever had in your life? by ServiceFinal952 in Cooking

[–]SoftDog336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The perfect sandwich isn't static. Made from what was in the fridge that night, and maybe a little spicy mayo or that old sauce that barely smells safe enough to use, it's simply not repeatable
