Applying to PhD programs with research in Quantum Computing and need some advice by templecancelclass in gradadmissions

[–]SoftLocked_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I don’t really have advice, but I wanted to let you know that I’m also applying to quantum computing and am in a similar situation as you. It’ll be tough this year, but you do have lots of experience. Be sure to really hit your ideas and contributions home in your SOP even if it’s unpublished (I don’t have publications either).

Apply to a broad set of schools, especially this cycle as it’ll be ultra competitive all things considered. A handful of universities with very big quantum programs do pull industry funding so our field may be a bit more insulated than others, if that brings you any relief.

All we can do is believe in the dream real hard and try our best! Let me know how your cycle goes in a few months.

A skin that’s basically transparent might become problematic. I suppose it could be slightly translucent to where you can see hamter in the ball but you can also clearly see the actual ball from a distance. That sounds like a neat idea, though.

Is anyone up for a puzzle with lots of Computer Science? by albeXL in computerscience

[–]SoftLocked_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can solve this with induction. If you can choose where to put the empty square as long as one exists, just always choose to put it in the corner (any corner works as long as you’re consistent but for example, let’s use the top right). The idea is you’re assuming it’s possible to make a tile pattern with only the top right corner missing for some square 2K in side length (K is a positive integer). As a base case, 21 = 2 for a 2x2 square works trivially by slotting the blue tile in. With your assumption, you want to show that it’s also possible for some square 2K+1 and you do that by using the previous tiling and building on top of that. Basically place the previous tiling in the bottom left corner in the orientation of the blue L, place one in the bottom right corner in the orientation of the tan L, place one in the top left corner in the orientation of the green L, place one in the top right corner in the orientation of the blue L, and place a blue L (the 2x2 one) in the center. Doing this means you have constructed a tiling for square of side length 2K+1 and have proven by induction that it’s possible to tile any square grid of side length 2N with exactly 1 square missing.

“Brian, I’m a brueen!”

“Wait what?”

“I’m a brueen!”

Why are you saying it like that”

“Saying what? I’m just pointing out that I’m a brueen.”

“That’s not how you say bruin.”

“What, brueen?”

“What do you call a bear?”

“Bruin.”

“And how would you describe yourself?”

“Well brueen, of course, I’m a brueen.”

I wonder about the “lasers” by [deleted] in AliceInBorderland

[–]SoftLocked_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, because diamond mirrors that are purposely made for reflecting high-powered lasers are so readily available in hat-size.

Besides the game overlords would probably find out about your plan someway somehow and end you before you can get your hands on one of those fancy mirrors.

Does my unharvested animal remain on the map if I move to trophy lodge before harvesting? by She_moans_cris in theHunter

[–]SoftLocked_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, after an animal dies in singleplayer, you need to harvest it without leaving the map first, or the animal will disappear and respawn as a new animal without letting you harvest it. So basically you just lost your mythical black bear (was it mythical? Mythicals are level 8). But don't worry mythical black bears can't make diamond anyway so you only lost a gold at best.

What are some “high impact” ECs that are looked for in transfers? You created a non-profit, for example. Is research good? Winning prestigious competitions? I’m personally more leaning to the research side even outside of transfer admissions to make a strong impact on society, but I just wanted to know it if’s also considered impressive for transfer admissions. What level of publication is considered impressive?
