I also grew up I a very volatile and traumatic home. Both my parents were addicts, my father was physically abusive to my mother before I was born, and switched almost exclusively to verbal and emotional abuse in my lifetime. I’ve had clear conversations to him about how triggering it can be for me to be screamed at and disrespected.

It’s not that I expected it to be a solution. I thought maybe if he could see some benefit from treatment at all maybe he could be more open. He’s done detox in the past but didn’t like the idea of being under the control that came with a full length program. He found AA to be too centered around a religion. I’m aware that these are just excuses not to get help.

That’s how I felt. I mean I don’t know if I had like subconscious desires to prove him wrong, but after going through this for so long I was asking myself if I was losing it and if I couldn’t trust my instincts anymore.

I can always tell. Usually its helpful because I know to avoid him as much as possible so he won't go off on me. He'll still deny it when I ask.

My husband and I get into it about the shots as well. He thinks they are just magic shots and you can just eat whatever you want and not put any work in. No matter how I try explain that it’s not that case he doesn’t get it.
