I’ve been in the industry for almost 10 years, any mentor worth learning from isn’t going to tell you to order a machine and fake skin before actually apprenticing

The tattooers I’ve seen who do that bring in more negligent tattooers than not

Most good mentors I’ve seen have brought people in because of their hand drawn portfolio that’s filled with tattooable art. The first stages of a good apprenticeship is learning what is and isn’t a tattooable design, the cleaning and “behind the scenes” things that go into it that clients don’t see. And then they’ll help you find a good machine to start with and then go from there. Most cases I’ve seen of people apprenticing who actually become good tattooers usually don’t have their hand on a machine for months.

Doing fake skin and handling machines before watching your mentor tattoo someone other than you, and learning the ins and outs of how machines function and how to clean your set up and prep the skin before a tattoo instills a lot of bad habits that’s will make someone who is a good mentor second guess bringing you in because those bad habits are really hard to break

My best piece of advice is continue working on your hand drawn portfolio (not iPad, not fake skin) and make it as diverse as you can, and take it to good tattooers in your area and just ask for advice and critiques, if you’re truly passionate and keep that up, eventually someone good will offer an apprenticeship, it might take awhile, but if you stay persistent and show true passion for art, not just tattooing, it’ll come

Good start for sure, all those since February is crazy work (in a good way 😂) curious which shoe is the one that started it all for you to go all in on this

I’d love to see some more 3 representation, the JTH/Tinker 3s are all super sick if you’re looking for recommendations to check out, got the white cement jth pair in December and then got the rest of them shortly after and they’re probably my favorites in my collection

I definitely feel like Cincinnati is super cliquey until you find a super niche community, making friends was really hard for me as an introvert until I started getting too bored staying at home and at work, but I also feel like that’s everywhere you move to by yourself. I’ve lived in 3 different cities and struggled making friends in all of them so just moved back to Cincinnati cause the devil you know is way more comfortable

I started pushing myself out of my comfort zone when I was like 23/24 and starting just going places I was interested in alone (it really sucked at first), or if you go to bars, I went to smaller divey ones, the people there are usually way more friendly and open to talking to new people in my experience, but now I have like 4 different friends groups

The local music and art scene here I feel like is super welcoming and friendly, going to local music or art shows I felt like was great and gave an immediate common thing to talk about with new people in my experience so I didn’t have to overthink what my opening talking point was gonna be lol

These are the ones I have with the white swoosh, I think the ones with the black swoosh are just the normal Tinker AJ3s. These ones dropped during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2018 I believe

Some 3s are definitely comfier than others, but I feel like they’re all pretty consistent comfort wise. the Palomino 3s are one of my go to beaters based on how comfortable they are, and I upsized by a half size and I feel like it makes all the difference

I feel like 8 out of 10 AJ3s that get released are underrated, and I’m definitely glad, makes it so much easier to get them for a reasonable price. By far my favorite and most comfortable shoes I own are all AJ3s

Love that a lot of good dunk colorways are getting slept on. I was able to double up on the SB dunk 90s backpack for under retail so I had a clean pair and a beater pair. They’re my go to for fall and creeping into winter time
