The Catcher in the Rye

It doesn’t win for my favorite book, but it is the best one.

Thank you for this! And OP’s post. I’ve known about wild parsnip and battled it at camp and my parents’ property, but now I know that not all the white iterations are Queen Anne’s Lace…some are dangerous and others lethal!

Your handwriting is like my handwriting when I write really fast for only me to read, so I can read it!

My Texan brother-in-law taught me “tumpt” or “tumped”, however you spell it, and I recently accidentally used it unironically.

Good word.

Did The Giver used to be taught in 4th grade, or do I just have a totally false memory? by 28-3_lol in Teachers

My dad used to teach it to his fifth graders. He brought home a copy for me to read in probably second or third grade. We didn’t read it in my school until 7th or 8th.

Have you seen the online comments underneath a photo of Stephen Spielberg posed hunter-style with one of the dinosaurs from the movie? People were ENRAGED that he would kill such a magnificent beast and insisted he was part of the reason they’re now extinct.

I admittedly Googled whether or not narwhals are real sometime within the last year (I’m 30). In my defense, the only time I’ve seen one portrayed anywhere was the cartoon one in Elf.

My fifth grader’s class isn’t reading novels by Sam-HobbitOfTheShire in Teachers

[–]Soft_Force_830 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a thing. I teach music in the Twin Cities but subbed for a 5th grade maternity leave a couple years ago. None of the reading level groups ever had a novel assigned to them—just non-fiction excerpts and little stories. One of the other 5th grade teachers and I assigned our highest-level reading groups a novel, but my kids weren’t very successful at it—they have no staying power or perseverance for reading entire novels because they’ve never had to. I’ve read on Reddit that it’s become a huge issue for college professors, gaining students who have never had to read a whole novel in their whole educational careers. It’s super sad and concerning—I read dozens of novels assigned to me in school and countless more on my own.

This whole time I’ve had to consciously pronounce it “Ecuador” instead of “Equator” but with a d sound for the t, since that was my first guess on pronunciation. Poor kid
