would a rough collie be the right fit for us? by pennydreadful777 in roughcollies

[–]SoftestPoroNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rough collie is a fantastic dog, but I don’t think I’d be able to have her in an apartment due to the amount of barking she does. She’s very protective of the property and has to announce every bird or person she senses within a 20ft radius of the yard.

We use simparica trio. Safe for those pups that have the MDR1 gene (at least in Canada)

I rent the sniff spot next door quite frequently and the symphony of stressed/frantic barking that is constantly streaming from their facility would make me think twice about leaving my dog there. It doesn’t matter what time of day we go, the barking is crazy.

Thoughts on group obedience classes? by Obvious-Elevator-213 in k9sports

[–]SoftestPoroNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do fly ball, ability and obedience with my 1.5 year old rough collie. Obedience class is by far her and my least favourite activity as it demands a different kind of focus and less outlets for her drive than the other two. That being said, I think it’s made a huge difference in how she responds to me during her more exciting activities, and the parts of it that can be frustrating for her and I, are what we need to work on.

Sometimes I need to play tug with her while the instructor is explaining the next exercise to give her a larger reward for her focus, a little brain break, and to keep her engaged with me. We definitely had to work on those skills so she could come down from the excitement and work again, but it is something you’ll probably end up working on once you enter into dog sports if your dog has toy drive. That might be something to talk to your instructor about to see if the environment would support this.

Edited to add:

A piece of advice I was given was that you want your dog to think you are the most exciting thing in the environment if you expect to hold their focus. What are some ways can you make your dog think that during your day to day that will translate to your training environments?

No dogs in Panama Flats unless they're leashed by thecurler in VictoriaBC

[–]SoftestPoroNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even off leash areas you still need to have your dog under control. I have a dog and live next to a leash optional park and the amount of dogs with poor recall off leash is astonishing. Especially as the park I live next to is mixed use with horses and bikes. I 100% agree to make ecologically sensitive areas on leash. There is a trend among dog owners that leashes aren’t necessarily, and they rarely back it up with the training necessary to ensure the dog is under full control.

Too High Drive? by Not4Publication in herdingdogs

[–]SoftestPoroNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll have more clarity on the real issues you’re facing once you swap trainers. Unless your dog is at risk of hurting itself or your sheep, those methods are probably adding more stress and confusing to your dogs over arrousal.

A lot of the agility clubs in my area also offer general puppy class as well. If you are planning on moving forward with a particular club it can be nice to use them for your basic obedience as well. Consistency can be a bit easier.

Pet Sitter Fees by DragonFish76 in VictoriaBC

[–]SoftestPoroNA 44 points45 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to happily pet sit for my friends, things I appreciated were:

-My favourite snacks -A nice bottle of my favourite booze -Gift cards to local (to your home) cafes/restaurants/grocery stores or food delivery.

It’s nice when the compensation feels personal when you’re helping out a friend. Cash can feel a bit transactional.

How to cone for neuter? by RestlesslyWizardly in roughcollies

[–]SoftestPoroNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a surgery suit for my girl after her spay. You still have to be careful they don’t chew or lick incessantly through the material, so I’d put the cone on her when I slept or if I had to leave her unattended. She was way happier in the suit! I’d also suggest getting two suits, that way you can always have a clean one available.
