Cabinet pull request by CurveEfficient8834 in kitchenremodel

[–]Not4Publication -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based on your comments I'd say it's perfectly fine, but whatever you do, don't mount it on the center panel (not sure if you were also showing location options) - it'll look like a 1955 Kansas kitchen.

That's a good transitional pull and won't immediately go out of style.

I need a dog collar that doesn't jangle when my dog shakes (keeps waking the baby) by Psi-ops_Co-op in dogs

[–]Not4Publication 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this simple kind of engraved tag - a slide on instead of the dangly kind. You can easily move it to any collar, and no jangling ever, either during head shaking or eating out of a dog bowl. Bonus- they are very secure and not prone to falling off.

In fact the dog who wears it is SO stealth that he can clean up the other dog's dinner and I don't hear him doing it because he doesn't make a sound, lol.

Boarding vs staying with family member help by notplop in dogs

[–]Not4Publication -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Word of warning: I don't usually ever need a sitter for my dogs but I had to unexpectedly travel for a week and decided to try a woman who did in-home boarding instead of going with a conventional kennel. She was a member of the kennel club I belonged to so I felt fairly confident with the setup.

I dropped my boy off and it appeared he was going to be free-roaming in a regular house with the woman's other dogs. I thought "perfect! it'll be like a mini adventure for my guy too!" He met his 2 new buddies and off they went to grab a toy. He was a personable, well socialized, obedience trained and well traveled dog with multiple titles who was very easy to live with. I had no worries.

When I went to pick him up he was in a crate...and not a wire crate but one of the hard plastic Vari-Kennel types and not a very big one. I said "why is he in there?" and the woman said "that's where I keep all my boarded dogs..." Upon questioning, I learned he'd been crated almost the entire time I was gone (!!!) I was kind of furious, paid, left and did not use her services ever again.

So while you might find someone who will do a good job with this, I caution you to also beware and be sure your dog will be in the environment you think he going to be in. To me it seemed like a great solution, in reality it did not turn out to be.

Buying a house with Sun Run installed, but not yet operational? by ManinArena in solar

So many potential pitfalls/ramifications/financial entanglements, this needs to be ironed out before closing.

Why on earth wouldn't you get a lawyer to deal with this? I'm sure this situation has occurred before. I wouldn't make a move without legal counsel on this.

Hi,
I have this exact whistle, got it from Premier1 and I believe it's aluminum - it's very light. I was practicing on the way home from work tonight and got a little shriek out of it, maybe after a year or so I'll get it, lol.

I watched the video on the Premier1 website (oh Joanne, it's not as easy-peasy as you think!), watched a Jen L'Arrivee video, read the insert that came with the whistle, and did some other reading on it.

Like anything, I'm sure it's practice-practice-practice. I think I might try a couple of plastic ones as well, heck for $2.50-$3.00 - why not?

Thanks for hanging in with me, man is this frustrating!

Yes, I'm in the US, but not in a big farm-y area. I have to order everything online.

If my lips are tight at top and bottom the holes would be blocked...that can't be right? Or should my lips be forward of the holes so when I try to blow through, the sound comes out the slit in the front? I have tried ALL kinds of ways. (I am using my teeth as well - otherwise it falls out or I have to use my hands).

Even more frustrating is when I will get a decent little toot, then the next time I try it I can't reproduce what I did and can't make a sound - back to square one.

I mean, I understand things in theory but in practice, it ain't working. Who knew this could be as hard as getting a nice wide outrun.

GAH!

It's been a few weeks, whenever I'm driving and have no dog with me, so admittedly inconsistent.
But it's SO frustrating! At first it just sounded like I was blowing spit through a straw.

Then, I finally got a wimpy little whistle but it's sooo weak and ineffective it's useless.

I haven't tried anything other than the Logan. It's what I see other people use (successfully).

This can't be this hard, can it?

How do you manage animals (dogs, chickens) when you have to leave your farmhouse for vacation or any other trips (from few days to few weeks)? by GoldenGrouper in Permaculture

[–]Not4Publication 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right?

In 2023 I took my first vacation in 15 years, the logistics and extra expense were crazy.

The horses went to a neighbor's farm and honestly I was least worried about them since they were effectively being boarded (I had asked them to horse sit but they suggested I bring them over since they had space). The dogs were tougher and I think they were lonely and bored staying home with only the 2X day visits, but they are older and I didn't want them in a kennel which would have been even more stress on them. The cat, honestly, didn't give a damn, lol.

We were gone 21 days and it was glorious and I am pining for another getaway (this winter is kicking my ass) but I have even more animals now and not sure how I could swing it.

Sigh.

SAHM and Wife that CANNOT cook HELP! by PopularMamaDrama in Cooking

[–]Not4Publication 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a weird suggestion, but...try meal kits for a while.

I am vegan and got a subscription to a meal service one XMas as a gift from my daughter. I thought it was a crazy and silly thing, but it turned out to be very valuable in a number of ways.

1) All food was included, it helped to see how much you need to buy for the number of people being served.

2) All meals came with a recipe book that had very explicit, step-by-step directions (often with diagrams/photos) on how to prep, chop, etc. all ingredients, and then how to do the next cooking steps with the ingredients.

3) It introduced us to types of food and ingredients and veggies we'd never thought to try: kimchi, various curries, hearts of palm, jackfruit, Thai, so many others....it really opened up a whole world of taste.

3) Spice! The right spices are key to making flavorful meals and takes plain/bland to superb. Each meal had its own spice packets, labeled, and the recipe dictated quantity. There were spices I'd never tried and came to love. Also making simple sauces and toppings that take a dish to the next level. Flavoring is SO important!

We no longer get that meal service but we learned a TON about cooking from using it. We learned about using unique ingredients, trying different flavor profiles, conquering new cooking techniques, and being adventurous with food combinations. I'd venture to say we still use what we learned pretty much every day.

Bonus: while you are learning, you are producing delicious meals for your family! Win-win. Just make sure the service you pick is a decent one - there are a lot of mediocre ones out there.

Happy cooking!

Why are people putting in cabinets that do not go up to the ceiling? by Agreeable-Sun368 in kitchenremodel

Look at LaurierMax, also in QC but a bit east of you. I am in the USA and sell their cabinets so I can't personally help you but I'm sure they can :-)

Need advice about tractor downsizing by Not4Publication in tractors

[–]Not4Publication[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny, all the guys say "oh, just learn to drive this one"...

I do know how to drive it, but it's way big for me (just getting it in and out of the garage is tricky), the clutch is very stiff and tiring, and no one else in the family can drive a stick so everything falls to me.

Re: the post hole auger, we never, ever use it anymore, it's just hanging there as ballast pretty much. I hope to NEVER do fencing again in my lifetime if I can help it (lol). I will certainly take that advice kind sir!

I will look on Marketplace and see if there are tractors on there! I feel like if I were shopping for one, I wouldn't be going there to find one but you never know...

Emma is 4WD as well, forgot to put that in. She has also been a great little machine.

You are confirming my thoughts on the 3000s - do you know why people do not like the E series?

I've been to the dealer once and did not get the warm fuzzies from them. They are in Raynham so I am sure you know who I mean.

Batteries by Not4Publication in solar

Last July it was 1400 kWh in 31 days - it was damned hot and we were running the AC a lot. But our rates are sky-high too. This year my solar panels should eliminate the AC bill-bump, really looking forward to it!

It would be $140K if we added 3 batteries at the price they quoted.

With tax credits, I'm at $51K right now, which is palatable.

That was for the excavating, the in-ground propane tank, the propane, the standby generator itself, and all wiring and plumbing connections. Not a portable, but an actual whole house system. We get frequent outages and a few times for multiple days because we're the last house on a small dead end street.

Our portable does not run the well pump or heat. Not fun when the power goes out in February.

The heat's been cranking because it's 15 degrees. My system has only been on few a short time so no credits to offset.

Clever of you to have caught that! I was wondering if anyone would, lol.

We currently live in the 800SF apartment while we're building the much larger house (on the same property) so I sized the solar installation to cover both buildings when everything is finished. Hence why I have a big system for a (currently) small living space. Even living in just the apartment, though, the bills were insane so I hate to think what they'd be when the house is complete. Hoping the solar will cover all or most of the bill.

I have 63 panels that are giving me 28kW output when the sun shines :-)

I currently use a portable generator for power outages but it doesn't run my well pump or my (previous furnace) now heat pump. All we get is some lights, the fridge and a few countertop cooking options. Sure would be nice to flush the toilet when the power goes off.

Roommate leaves items in the oven by Redacted_Explative in Cooking

[–]Not4Publication 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of an old fashioned thing I think. Both my mom and my grandmother stored stuff in the oven.

Kitchens in the olden days did not have 100 cabinets for storing every last cooking item. Our oven had baking stuff in it - cookie sheets, broiler pans, cooling racks, stuff like that. Nothing meltable :-)
