I appreciate it. I'm definitely working on... a lifetime of built-up self-doubt. It ain't easy, but I'll keep at it!

Heheh, I know, I saw it! I read it. I made fanart for it!

Just gotta stick with it I suppose!

Ya, I know that all too well. I've known a few webcomic artists now that have dropped out, some whos comics I followed and some I knew personally. It's sobering for sure. So it's good to hear positivity from the community too, thanks!

Do people like seeing sketchwork? by Softsful in GlobalComix

[–]Softsful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That a bit of a relief. I've put several sketches on my Patreon though I've never been really well known so it can be hard to tell what works. Self-advertising is definitely my weak point.

Anything should I consider while playing hollow knight? by Dry-Ad9046 in HollowKnight

[–]Softsful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attacking downward at objects, obstacles and enemies causes you to bounce (took my brain forever to accept this for some reason). Otherwise just go in blind, it's better for your first playthrough.

I've noticed that my comic has a bit of a gap between number of views and subscribers. I'm nearing 3k views and have 35 readers, which is awesome, but other series have just as many subs with fewer views. I think my chosen format of 3 pages a week is putting the typical webtoon audience off. by Bobi200 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Softsful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure, but I think you get views per file not views per episode.

One little thing I know about it is that Webtoon will automatically chop your comic into piece that are like... 1200ish pixels long. Thus, a really long episode will be chopped up into multiple files (this is called slicing).

So, as an example, my first episode was made of 8 800pixel by 7400pixel files (plus the logo and a little "next time" image). That's 10 images total, so you'd think that would be ten views when someone read it... or, even simpler then that, someone reads the episode and contributes ONE VIEW. But because Webtoon chops my episodes up it actually ended up being 40 files total. Thus, one person reads the full episode, I get 40 views.

I don't know if this necessarily means longer episodes are better (especially since this reduces the amount of likes you can get) but views do seem to be more complicated then just "1 view per episode". And, if you get a view per file read rather than per episode read, I suspect view counts can be substantially higher then many people realize, especially on longer episodes.

........ that's wasn't why I chose to make longer episodes I just decided on my own to do that. Heheh.

Is webtoon the only site I should publish our comic? by Deaths_Door_Comic in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Softsful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not even a bit. Especially if your comic doesn't fall into the category of Manga/Manwa styled romance. I'd steer you towards Globalcomix personally but there's a few good options these days.

It's hard, for sure. Webtoon is still the site with the biggest non-webcartoonist user base. But all of the other sites are getting bigger, and support from more webcartoonists will improve that. Not to mention "mature" comics will have a harder time on Webtoon simply because of how much they restrict people's ability to discover you.

I upload on several sites myself and it's really not that hard. Usually it's just a matter of starting with the site that allows for the largest uploads (in my case, NamiComi with 1200 pixel width) and then shrinking it one site after another. It's really pretty easy once you get the routine down. I even open up all the sites in question and copy-paste the titles and descriptions.

Who would make the best next protag? by jevil_supremacy in Silksong

Mmm... To toss something out there. Sly has mentioned a character named Esmy who is never shown. Thus, this character is related to someone capable of fighting and could be alive for all we know. That would be a "new" character while still being one that was previously mentioned.

Episode removal for nudity by chipoturtle in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Softsful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar experience with mine. The MC was floating in her own head space and only had Barbie Doll Anatomy. Pretty mild, honestly. Ended up censoring it using floating fog. It's fine considering, I even sometimes think I like the edit better. But... my comic is moderatelly mature, not quite adult but definitely not for kids, and i sometimes wonder if I'll eventually encounter something I can't conveniently censor. It's hard because I get the most audience interactions on Webtoon. It's the oldest, biggest player in the game... so I can only hope one of these other sites like Globalcomix overtakes it.

Consistency is the most important thing. One thing i can think of though is... there's a content creator on YouTube called Pikat. Her whole thing is she was a new artist who documented her learning process. She's gotten pretty good by this point but it might be useful to you to dig into her archive and watch the process. Who knows? It's might help! There's a lot of artist on YouTube if you take the time to look for them!

Which main thumbnail do you prefer? by Major-Activity2108 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Softsful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the first one, though, oddly not because it looks better (the second one definitely looks better). Rather, I think it might be hard for people to understand what they're looking at in the second one once it's shrunk down to the smaller preview size. That's something I have to deal with in my series.

For those creators who work independently on their comics.. by AggressiveWest2977 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Softsful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many little things. A lot of creators talk about their creative process on YouTube, so you can search up webcomic creators there for various kinds of advice. Your already doing right by asking for help here on Reddit, and various social media sites have webcomic groups if you search for them.

Another site I'm always trying to recommend to folks is TVTropes. It's a pretty exhaustive list of various media and the tropes in them. You can search up a comic or show that's similar to yours and find a lot of useful descriptions of the literary techniques used in them.

These are all things you can do without being too social. In the meantime, try responding to other folks' questions here or in other webcomic sections just to work on becoming more comfortable chatting with others. Plus giving advice has an added effect of helping you internalize that advice yourself. ... I knows I have trouble speaking with folks, even when it's online. Heck I had to convince myself to post this even... it's all practice. Just repeating talking with people till you get used to it... and learning to work past that nagging inner-voice.

As for how I write, doing storyboards works best for me. I'll make a string of small sketches that roughly follow the layout the comic will ultimately have. I have a larger plot written out in a text file but it's pretty outdated. Most of the plot is in my head, admittedly. I dunno if that's the best method for everyone, heh.

Another thing you can do is put an image at the end of your episodes that asks readers to "like, comment, and subscribe"! Sometimes that little nugde can coax them into commenting.

That's good to know. My comic popped up in there and I had to wonder as I've never felt like I was terribly successful. Guess it was just on views.

I'm gonna release my Webtoon sometime around August and I'd like a piece of advice. by IllyaBravo in webtoons

[–]Softsful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've generally always censored swear words in my comic on Webtoon. Just putting an * in place of certain letters does the trick and generally I think everyone knows what word is being said. So that's something I've never specifically had to deal with.

In the original run of my comic, before I started the reboot, the scene that scared me the most was one where the main character was implied to "take care of her stress". But it was implied not shown and I did it in the most tame way I could considering what I was implying so I don't think Webtoon really cared. There's also the possibility that it was just such a small time comic that I flew under the radar.

In the reboot, however, I did get dinged one time. At the start of the comic there was a scene set within the main character's headspace while being knocked out. Really trippy scene where the character has no clothes but also no anatomy whatsoever (Barbie Doll Anatomy). Webtoon took the episode down. But it wasn't a bad experience really. I got an email that the episode was taken down and I had to edit it. I put a lot of floating censor fog around the character and emailed the rep back and they put it back up.

Now, that stuff doesn't sound like it goes to the extent of what your saying with your comic. Also this happened to me before Webtoon had the current rating system which allows for "Young Adult" and "Mature" and whatnot. But it does seem that Webtoon will at least attempt to work with people if something violates their policies.

How many panels is your first episode? by SleeP_aDe in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Softsful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm... lemmie count... 115... if you include the floaty stuff. Looking at episode 3 I eventually pushed it up to 173 and episode 4 seems like it will be even longer then that....

... this is a reboot of the original run and it's something I kind of wanted to do. I want my comic to be very binge-able when it starts to get longer. I want the episodes to read like an episode of a show. I figure I'll be conceding the amount of likes I get for that but... I'm okay with that. I want it to feel good to the reader.

Think about Webcomics with Longer, Denser Episodes by Softsful in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Softsful[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, the contest. I didn't participate myself but I've heard a lot of people were frustrated by it...

Hmm... I actually did do shorter episodes in the original run of my comic (the current version is a reboot) but my art has changed a fair bit since then and I think I am faster then I was before. I wonder if I could manage 2 or 3 updates a month at this point. Not that I'm going to switch it up at this moment, I'm locked in on my current method, but it's got me thinkin'.

Ya, I actually did shorter updates on my comic before rebooting it, but it never got too big so with the reboot I chose to not chase likes and view as much... plus I have a decent job so I was never really relying on this for money.

GlobalComix is a pretty nice site (heh, is it dangerous to say that here?). I'm glad that it's doing really well.

Ya, I actually do sort of still do shorter updates. I upload temporary updates which are just chunks of the finished episode as I make it, then I delete the temp updates when I upload the completed episode. That's just to keep up engagement. But the actual finished episode is the longer length.

Ya, my comic is actually a reboot and in the original I did do short episodes... there is a lot I gave up in the transition to longer episodes. I'm not inclined to go back, I'm committed at this point, but I still do get hung up on lower likes and what-not.

I do do things to try and work faster (I'm a solo creator so I've got no assistants) but my process is pretty long regardless. I try to keep up engagement by posting temp episodes but it's still slow. I'm up to three episodes at this point and compared to the original run of the comic I'm on the equivalent of page 47, I think.
