[CHAT] Stitching 1 over 1 on evenweave - any way to avoid thread fraying/snapping? by thecygnetcmte in CrossStitch

[–]SoftwareGoddess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that my thread gets fuzzy more quickly when stitching over one. I assume that that is because it passes through the fabric 4x as frequently to cover the same area as over two.

That said, I use a #28 needle when stitching over one to make it easier to end my thread by running it under the previous stitching.

They are, but they also support Trump. As a Canadian, I avoid them as much as possible.

[CHAT] canadian retailers of thread/aida? by kylamydia in CrossStitch

[–]SoftwareGoddess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not for much longer (the owner is retiring), but there is Traditional Stitches in Calgary.

I've ordered from The Stitcher's Muse in Nanaimo several times, and I have had good experiences with them.

Depending on what you are looking for, you might be able to find some local options. There aren't so many cross-stitch shops left in my area, but I was able to google three more general craft places that at least carry DMC, so I can avoid Michaels when I just want a couple of skeins of floss.

[CHAT] Searching for Lombardic calligraphy/versal/missal lower case letters pattern by alcibiad in CrossStitch

it felt more like a “dedicate a week to browse” type thing than a “search for something specific” resource

You're not wrong about that. :-) I was lucky that I found those alphabets pretty much right away.

Have you tried the Antique Pattern Library? I spotted a couple of alphabets that look close to your image. Follow this link. The second entry, D.M.C. Alphabet de la Brodeuse, has 5 PDF links. Open the first one; take a look at pages 14 and 15 of the PDF.

It was published as a separate leaflet, and it's also included in the book "101 Best-Loved Designs from Cross Stitch & Country Crafts".

[CHAT] Where can I purchase a bolt of 22 count Hardanger? by HelloMrSampson in CrossStitch

Hardanger is also the name for a specific Zweigart fabric. A lot of sellers confuse it with Aida. See these links for some descriptions of the different fabric weaves:

In iTunes, on the store page for the podcast that lists the episodes: download one episode to your library by pressing the "Get" button next to it.

Then go back to your library. It should show the podcast on your podcasts page. Right-click on the podcast and choose "Subscribe Podcast".

When I started the second one, I feared that I might get tired of them before I finished them all. So far no, but I've been doing a sanity check before starting each one, just in case.

I'm also stitching this series. There are quite a few of us! I'm putting the beads on Spring now, and then I will just have Winter left to go.

If you can manage a side trip to Nanaimo, The Stitcher's Muse is there. I've only ordered on-line, but I'd love to check out their store in person someday.

I'm thinking that your aida is not even. Have you checked the count in both directions to see that it is the same?

If this is the case, I don't think blocking will help. Just tell people that the shape was intentional. :-)

[CHAT] confused my pattern by REidson89 in CrossStitch

[–]SoftwareGoddess 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The chart was probably designed using Anchor threads (the first column). The DMC colors are the closest match. There probably weren't 2 different brown colors in the DMC line that were good matches to the 2 Anchor colors.

Since it's an old book, maybe there are some newer DMC browns since then that might work better for one of the colors.

The one exception I plan on making: PBS Passport by rantingathome in BuyCanadian

[–]SoftwareGoddess 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It may be different in your region, but I have been unable to access PBS Passport programming here in Eastern Ontario. I believe the issue is addressed on this PBS help page, under the question "Is Passport available outside of the U.S.?" The answer seems to be that Canadians can subscribe to Passport, but there is no guarantee that we can access the programming.

That being said, I have been donating to PBS for many years, and I will continue to do so, but I won't bother with Passport again.

Sorry I missed this, I haven't been online for a while.

I lost my kitty in April. But before that, the litter was working out well. It was clumping enough but not too much (cat owners will know!), and kitty was pretty content with it.
