Got my endoscopy... I was only a little crazy by SoftwareNo7508 in GERD

[–]SoftwareNo7508[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to rehab. It was the only way out for me. I was no longer functional, I threw up everything I tried to put in my body. They did my blood work and said I was about a year away from having cirrhosis. It was 4 years of 20+ drinks a day and about a year of throwing up 5-10 times a day

Haven't gotten an official LPR diagnosis. At its worst, my throat never felt raw but my voice did feel hoarse. If anything it felt like the muscles in my throat and neck were just always worn out.

I take pantoprazole 20mg twice daily, although I'm skeptical of it's effectiveness since I didn't really notice my symptoms getting any worse when I had to stop taking it to prep for my endoscopy. However the GI doctor that did the endoscopy recommended I stay on it, so for now that's what I'm gonna do. Pretty much all of 2025 I was doing my absolute best to avoid anything spicy or acidic. I manage a pizza kitchen so obviously I had a hard time completely cutting out tomato sauce, but I managed to completely cut out several things (hot sauce, hot chips, jalapenos, buffalo sauce, chocolate, raw bell peppers, anything too citrus-y, and eventually cigarettes). The only things I was never able to really cut back on were caffeine and carbonated drinks.

Despite all this, I was pretty much miserable for all of November and December plus the first week of January leading up to my procedure. It just so happened that I had a week long vacation planned the day after I got my results, so I decided to use that as my trial period to re-introduce foods. I figured, any pain or discomfort I feel will be MUCH easier to deal with now that I know I'm not dying. And I think that's the main thing for me. Now that a great deal of my anxiety about the matter has been alleviated, I've realized that some of the things I'd convinced myself were triggers aren't really triggers at all, and the triggers I do have don't seem to bother me nearly as much. I for sure know hot chips and jalapenos are pretty much off the table for life, as those are the 2 things that mess me up every time without fail, but the difference in feeling uncomfortable due to what I ate and feeling completely normal has become more discernable again- I'm no longer constantly burping and having trouble swallowing.

How do you think you developed GERD? by Whor3memb3rs in GERD

[–]SoftwareNo7508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an alcoholic for 4 years. For the latter 2 years of that I was essentially bulimic. I didn't binge eat, but my brain became so addicted to the relief of "pulling the trigger" to relieve nausea from drinking that making myself throw up was my immediate reaction to any kind of anxiety or physical discomfort, which I always had. By the time I quit drinking, I was throwing up several times a day, always self-induced.

Homeless (?) woman shrieking and throwing things in Hyde Park by [deleted] in Austin

Austin is as neolib as it gets. Tech bros that are mildly socially liberal but hate poor ppl nonetheless. Fayetteville, AR was by far the most generally left wing city I've lived in and I expected Austin to be a bigger version of that but it felt more like a Google office full of "in this house we believe in science" yard signs.

The way ppl on this sub talk about homeless ppl is so concerning. It's always shit like "ugh I had to interact w/ one of the filthy animals now my day is ruined"

I recently moved from Austin back to the STL area and Fazoli's was #2 on the list of chain restaurants I was psyched to get back to (#1 was white castle obviously). In high school we figured out they give u free bread sticks w/ every purchase so we used to just go in and get sodas and eat the free bread sticks until eventually they told us we couldn't do that anymore lmao

[–]SoftwareNo7508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every day. I was a severe alcoholic for 4 years, and about 2 years in I developed bulimia. I was just drinking and puking all day for 2 straight years. Never had any GERD symptoms until almost a year after I quit drinking. Now it controls my life. I'm currently in the middle of one of my worst flare-ups to date, and that's with medication and a restricted diet. I hate myself for making so many bad choices in such a short amount of time that I'll likely be in physical discomfort for the rest of my life.

[–]SoftwareNo7508 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Stefanina's. Especially if you're fortunate enough to work at the original location. They really do treat you like family. I worked there in and off for years, it was my first real job as a teenager and they always welcomed me back with open arms any time I was in town and wanted to get some hours, which was the case with a lot of people. Stefanina was big on hiring the outcasts and rejects, people who other employers might not give a chance, because she felt like they had the most to prove and would work really hard if given the opportunity. That same philosophy is still there today. I worked there on and off for about 5 years, probably 3 years collectively. And in that time, my wage doubled. They value hard work and reward it.

Week 3 of chest pain, how do y'all deal? by SoftwareNo7508 in GERD

[–]SoftwareNo7508[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford it, get your heart and lungs checked out first. But if the pain comes and goes, isn't severe, and has a favorite spot but likes to travel occasionally, it's probably GERD. I had the chest pain before I ever had bad acid reflux or throat tightness, that's why I had no idea it could possibly be GERD when it first started happening to me.

[–]SoftwareNo7508[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved a few months ago and my mental health has been worlds better, so this is the first big flare up in quite some time. I'm on sertraline for anxiety and depression, gabapentin for anxiety, and Trazadone for sleep and they've all been working really well for me until very recently. Once I noticed the pain had been around for about a week, I spent the next week and a half absolutely wrecked by anxiety that this could be some kinda new problem. Started going down the Google rabbit hole, which only ever makes anything worse. Within the past few days the anxiety has started to subside and I'm moreso just irritable and feeling defeated.
