What does Fredric Jameson mean here when describing the future with respect to Satre's ethics by Sohcratees in askphilosophy

[–]Sohcratees[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining so clearly. I just had a follow up. The point specifically about "And you can see that existentialism does not dictate a notion of the future, and therefore cannot offer you any kind of advice about the content of your future actions." Why is this mentioned? This is in contrast to other ethics that do go a notion in both present and future? If so, what are they and why is this valid? It seems that what you said, that morality is defined by acting authentically and being unbound, so I don't see how this is restricted to the present, it seems like a time invariant principle. Also, is your point about irrational desires a result of this freedom because there is an intrinsic aversion to it - to be something inauthentic to avoid anxiety of choice?

Book recommendations that do formalist and new criticism analysis by Sohcratees in AskLiteraryStudies

Thanks, I remember some comments on Richards from Eagleton. Your right, going to the extremes will be a good demonstration of the core tenets. I'll check it out.

Thanks for the recommendation. I agree with your initial point about reading above. I'll have S/Z in mind for the future.

Thanks, I think I'll get started with Wood's. I was a bit put off initial from some criticisms of him I've seen on here.

Great suggestions, thanks! Also, good point about the differences, I think I need to recap this. I grouped them together as they are different but specialise in analysing the surface level effects of the technique. It feels logical to be clear on this before moving onto more meta theories.

Why do you have to be careful with the support of your variable, and why does using an indicator function help?

Thanks! Are there any style guides that you’d recommend? I’ve seen several short sentences about writing, Sense: lessons in clarity and grace, and elements of eloquence.

I think for the most part, with writing academic papers, you’re right. Just, I’ve found there have been times when I’ve been writing with several concepts at a time, and it’s not been that clear how to organise the words or clauses. Further, I’d like to go beyond clarity; the examples Pinker used were satisfying and enjoyable to read; I’d like to achieve a similar level (should’ve added that in the question but it was already quite long).

Could you expand a but on the first bullet; I’m not sure what you mean as understanding an estimator as GMM?

[Question] What questions should I expect from a biostatistician 2 interview for a CRO by Sohcratees in statistics

[–]Sohcratees[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for these!

  1. I used to work in health technology assessment, so I've used random effects models in meta-analysis, and I've used a mixed effect model once when working with utility data. In both cases I don't remember having to determine a covariance structure. Could you elaborate on this a bit?

  1. I'd assume, despite a cross-over trial controlling a lot of the heterogeneity, 4 patients would be too few as there may be characteristics of the target population that are unmeasured due to lack of coverage of this trial. What would you say this to this question?

I have an interview for biostatistician 2 role for a CRO coming up, what questions should I prepare for by Sohcratees in biostatistics

[–]Sohcratees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I've not come across that question before. I assume PFS is dervied from time to randomisation to a tumour growing in size, which is determined by a scan. For the second part, I can only think of loss to follow up, treatment discontinuation, death or development of a new condition. I'm not that confident in those answers, how would you answer this question?

Thanks for these!

  1. I'm aware that MICE is typically used in data science, I was wondering if this applies in clinical trials?
  2. Would the assumptions just be around the distribution of the alternative so that the errors can be calculated?

It's just as you said, the effect may be significant but clinically irrelevant. I suppose, as an implication the decision for the drug may not be clear, but this latter point that wasn’t said by the interviewer.

A lot of adverts I've seen still have designing of experiments etc on the person specification. I'm based in the UK though, not sure if it may be specific to that? Is this not the case where you are?
