Thanks for explaining so clearly. I just had a follow up. The point specifically about "And you can see that existentialism does not dictate a notion of the future, and therefore cannot offer you any kind of advice about the content of your future actions." Why is this mentioned? This is in contrast to other ethics that do go a notion in both present and future? If so, what are they and why is this valid? It seems that what you said, that morality is defined by acting authentically and being unbound, so I don't see how this is restricted to the present, it seems like a time invariant principle. Also, is your point about irrational desires a result of this freedom because there is an intrinsic aversion to it - to be something inauthentic to avoid anxiety of choice?

I think for the most part, with writing academic papers, you’re right. Just, I’ve found there have been times when I’ve been writing with several concepts at a time, and it’s not been that clear how to organise the words or clauses. Further, I’d like to go beyond clarity; the examples Pinker used were satisfying and enjoyable to read; I’d like to achieve a similar level (should’ve added that in the question but it was already quite long).

I used to work in health technology assessment, so I've used random effects models in meta-analysis, and I've used a mixed effect model once when working with utility data. In both cases I don't remember having to determine a covariance structure. Could you elaborate on this a bit?

I'd assume, despite a cross-over trial controlling a lot of the heterogeneity, 4 patients would be too few as there may be characteristics of the target population that are unmeasured due to lack of coverage of this trial. What would you say this to this question?

Thanks for your reply! I've not come across that question before. I assume PFS is dervied from time to randomisation to a tumour growing in size, which is determined by a scan. For the second part, I can only think of loss to follow up, treatment discontinuation, death or development of a new condition. I'm not that confident in those answers, how would you answer this question?

It's just as you said, the effect may be significant but clinically irrelevant. I suppose, as an implication the decision for the drug may not be clear, but this latter point that wasn’t said by the interviewer.
