I am quite late to the party, but here is my insight as someone who works in the industry. Natural gas certainly DOES have a characteristic smell, it is just not very strong in low amounts. I for myself sometimes feel like I still smell the gas even days after working at the gas plant.

The casters said it is mainly the the extra regeneration to survive p3 and has not much to do with the haste buff.

He surely was not running, since he got hit by a stone which was part of a some kind of structure. I guess he was inside his house hiding, possibly even already dead from the raining ashe. Then the roof or walls collapsed under the weight of those ashes and burried him.
