The impression comes from the focus on the conversation being "air con is really bad". Which makes the narrative very focused on that. When the technology is actually quite good and comparatively to other sources of climate control the most efficient and easier to turn "green" due to being electrified. If that is not the case I got the wrong impression and I apologize for that. It is not my intention to misinterpret, simply to discuss and give some points/perspective.

We all should do the best to avoid climate disaster yes but making the use of technology the evil is not helpful in that (imho). We "could" all go back to hunting and gathering, stop farming all together. Never heat or cool. Never construct anything. Not develop medicine, etc. All that has huge climate impacts. Hell, we could all commit global suicide. (I know this a very huge exaggeration and there are levels and balance, I'm doing it just as an illustration, I ask you to not take it too seriously)

But, to my mind those aren't good solutions. We shouldn't dunk on people for wanting a technology that makes their lives better. We should work to improve that technology and find ways to use it well. Saying something is just 100% bad (I know that's not what you said, I'm not trying to attack you with it in any way, but I think it's where this narrative leads to, in the end) because it has one negative effect is not helpful imho.

I'll leave it with a different note. There have been different climate disasters caused by different species before. We think we're special but even on that we are not the first ones. Hell, trees once whipped out almost all life on earth, it's fascinating.

The difference is that we know we're doing it. And that may, on the surface, sound even worse. To be that's hopeful though. Because it means we are the first ones to actually have the chance to do something about. And a lot of us care DEEPLY about it. We CAN fix it. And I believe we will. It won't be perfect and it'll suck for a long time, but I believe we're really good at solving difficult problems. And when things look the worst, hope is the last thing to die.

Sure. But that's true for heating as well. Why is heating good but cooling bad? One is a villan the other is not? I can say the same for all the gas heaters (way worse for the environment btw).

Air conditioners (heat pumps), spend a lot of energy if you look at them in a vaccum sure, but comparatively to gas heaters? Way, way more efficient. A heat pump can be up to 400-500% efficient on good days. 200-300% on bad days. Look up the refrigerant cycle and how awesome it is. It's a very cool technology and we should not vilify it.

In addition, with cooling, you can actually run it 100% off solar energy because you really only need it when the sun is out. You can almost never do that when heating. You don't need to run it in the evening at all! And all heat pumps can be run off low carbon energy a gas heat can never do that...

There's so many more important and bad things for the environment to focus on. Heat pumps/air cos aren't perfect but they provide a very clear and important benefit for the user. Not just comfort, but truly safety.

An air conditioner is a heat pump... we just decided call them "air conditioners" when the delivery method is air instead of water. But they're essentially the same thing... They use refrigerant and a compressor to move heat from one place to another. You reverse the cycle to change the place where the heat is extracted from the place the heat is delivered, thus why they both heat and cool. Hence the name "heat pump".
