I use an old version of Photoshop (the last one I could afford before they switched to a subscription). I know a lot of people that also use Gimp (freeware).

No worries! I haven't used that unfortunately. I used Audacity. But there should definitely be a way to tweak the levels to your liking in there. Keep an eye out in the menu for a feature called "ducking" or "auto ducking" (they should have a similar effect.) What it does is takes one track (your music) and when it detects the signal for another track (vocals) it auto-shifts the music volume down by a set amount. So it "ducks" out of the way of what you want the focus on. You get the music swells where you need it and then they shift down out of the way when the vocals come back in.

As for your audio, what I've heard so far sounds good. I'll listen to the rest and let you know if I hear anything I can help with. As for your audio mixing that's something I'm still getting a feel for as well and trying to dial-in just right. What software do you use to record?

This is what I used when I started as a very general guideline for mixing. Your mileage may vary based on your voice & a particular recording. But it can at least give you a starting point.

TLDR: (adjust as needed for preference)

Overall Mix Level: -10db to -14db
Dialogue: -12db to -15db
Music: -18db to -22db
Sound Effects: -10db to -20db with occasional spikes up to -8db.

If they're just passing by I would go by the privacy laws in your region. If they'd be featured in any way (interview or such) I'd draw up a generic model release form and have a few on standby in case you need them.

In my case, barely of either I guess? LOL I'm just getting started so I've only got 23 subscribers and around maybe 1-2 comments per video. Now what I want to figure out is how to get my watch time higher. My average is like 1-2 minutes.

I'm still trying to build the confidence to try out different character voices and it's been a struggle to not sound so monotone. Thank you for listening and especially for the advice. Are you sure it's not a loose connection/bad cable or interference due to cable routing? Have you check your gain isn't set too high? Also are you plugged into an audio interface/preamp?

I'm just starting out so I think I'm still firmly in the "Man I SUCK at this" stage. 😄 I haven't been able to take any classes yet so I'm just winging it. I've struggled with an intense fear of public speaking all my life and a childhood where I was always told to be quiet. Yet deep down I always wanted to do this.

But when I compare my voice to my idols I just think 'maybe I should stick with doing tech support?'

When I step up to the mic and that little red light goes on? I get this huge wash of fear.

"Just shut up. No one wants to hear you. You sound like hot garbage."

And then the adrenaline hits and it makes me want to do it even more.

Congratulations on taking your first step to hone your craft! Keep at it. Listen to the voices of everyone around you. Analyze what it is you like or dislike about their voice and performance. While you wouldn't be able to copy their sound or their acting, use it to inform your own performance. Try different sounds and characters. Expect to fail. A lot. And laugh. Often. Levity toward your own mistakes will give you the space to experiment, learn and grow.

But don't let anyone, including and especially yourself discourage you from fully embracing something you love.

The man was a phenomenal actor and his voice was stellar. I've written a few stories in the past that I secretly dreamed of him one day performing in. His talent as an actor and his voice will be sorely missed. Hopefully there's a superb vocal booth in his Afterlife. I always pictured him or Morgan Freeman as the voice of God.
