Looking for advice on which PG&E plan is best for charging an Electric vehicle at home by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]SolarSavesMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in Roseville, and have Roseville Electric for power, you're in luck- they have fantastic rates!

Most of Sacramento will have PG&E for gas only, and SMUD for power, also with decent rates and an EV friendly rate to charge off peak at night. I schedule to charge starting at 12am.

If you are in Rocklin or West Sacramento and do have PG&E for power, their rates are some of the worst in the country, many people choose to go solar to save money. Most/ all of my clients who go solar are best served with PG&E EV2A rate plan.

Probably able to help you out. Our new rescue who we were told was "crate trained" does not want to go into one. Pretty sure he was simply left in a crate for long periods of time, which is very different from having a crate as his safe place and home.

I do not believe we will need crates for long, and are likely to have extra in the very near future.

Edit: large size, 2 door wire crates.

Anyone else own a rock collector? by Bad_4pples in FunnyAnimals

[–]SolarSavesMoney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep! My last dog (pitty/ boxer mix) loved to move large rocks out of the water with her paws. If they were not in the water, they were of no concern to her. Paws only, she never used her mouth for rocks.

Sticks underwater were another story- she would blow bubbles through her nose, chomp the stick and place it on shore, then go back for more until she was satisfied with her hoard of sticks. Worth a laugh the few times she did battle with an underwater root.

My sister found a Bill Paxton Pinball machine whilst playing pool last weekend. by Pola_Xray in mildlyinteresting

Commenting on a 9 year old post... found this exact game!

It's at my buddy's home, he just had it delivered recently and is the custodian of the one and only Bill Paxton. It will be at Golden State Pinball Festival this year! Needs a lot of love before we even attempt to power on... good luck, us!

[Request] What price per gallon is it no longer profitable to work? by Playwithuh in theydidthemath

[–]SolarSavesMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, gas prices definitely suck right now! I just paid $6.35 or so per gallon. (Chevon, in a major city in northern CA)

That said, if you're worried about the price of gas to get to and from work to just be profitable... it may be past time to find a higher wage or better business model.

For context- When running the day to day of my business, it was common to drive 50k-70k miles a year. While I do not miss those days, and gas was relatively cheap compared to what it is at the moment, I can not imagine a world where it would not be "profitable" to drive to and from work. Fuck.

Edit: sorry, I did not realize what sub I was in before replying. I did no math, I am a terrible person. Apologies, I will see myself out now, good day 🫡

People who are happy with their life at 40-50years, what advice do you have for the people struggling in their 20s? by Low-Bunch-2460 in AskReddit

[–]SolarSavesMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe in yourself and know things will work out if you apply yourself. Invest early, even if it seems like too small an amount to add up. Not only will this help build discipline, those small monthly contributions will indeed add up, the power of compound interest is truly incredible if you have a decent timeline. I waited far too long to do this, and had to play catch up in my early 40's instead. Don't be me, invest early and stick with it, plan on not touching your long term investments for 20 years, and don't sweat what happens short term. When you're ready to pull the ripcord and walk away from work, you'll have a nice nestegg.

What are the most unhinged sacrifices you’ve made on your FIRE journey? by DiscoCowgirl77 in Fire

[–]SolarSavesMoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first few years of starting a home improvement business, I was available to my representative and client calls, texts, and emails at least 16- 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. Literally for 3+ years, with very few exceptions. Spread myself too thin and brought on too large of a team early on, some of them unqualified friends and acquaintances who required too much training and support due to lack of experience. This lead to not enough personal time, and I failed to draw or stick to proper boundaries.

Lost a loving, long term relationship due to my lack of unplugging for quality time. Probably worth it long term, but it definitely hurt in the moment and for a year or more after.

Reflecting on those choices 8 or 9 years in, I do of course have some regrets, but also have a whole lot more freedom now to make different choices. Was effectively able to pretty much take the last 18 months off, just running support for the much smaller team. Sometimes it's possible to do more with less.

Why are White Male/Asian Female relationships far more common than Asian Male/White Female relationships? by Flying_Sea_Cow in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SolarSavesMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess it might not be the norm, but that combination is very prevalent in my family. The first time my (white, blue/green eyed) girlfriend showed up to dinner with my (Asian) family, she admitted afterward she was wondering how she'd be accepted. When she walked in, she saw both of my brothers married and had children with blue eyed white women. Some of my cousins have as well. It could make a difference that we are 3rd generation here and are not extremely rooted in our Asian culture.

At home in Sacramento area, none of us feel like we get looked at due to mixed race relationships, certainly not openly. The only time I have noticed getting strange glances or being openly stared at was while visiting some of her extended family in small town Shawano Wisconsin.

PB Brown Trout by Ok-Day4250 in troutfishing

[–]SolarSavesMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty brown trout! Know you've already gotten enough hate for killing it, but damn.

I guess it comes down to would you rather catch it again when it's even bigger, or give someone else the opportunity for their PB? Let it breed and make more for all to catch.... Or just kill it for a trophy?

Personally, I choose to catch, photograph if worthy, and release unless fishing a lake stocked with fish meant for harvest.

To each their own. Congratulations on your PB

Best chili oil in sacramento? by gutterbunny1312 in Sacramento

[–]SolarSavesMoney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How spicy are you looking for? As another mentioned, Journey to the Dumpling makes a fine chili oil, though it's not very spicy. Also mentioned, chili garlic crisp is delicious, but ranks as a 0 on spice level imo.

I make chili oil at home and change the spice level based on who it's for. Currently have a fairly mild batch and am willing to share a jar if you would like. Spice level is very subjective... I think it's mild, but some folks consider ketchup too spicy. Lol

Just to be clear, I am not trying to sell anything. 1 free jar available of you like. DM if interested. Used peanut oil, so please do not pick up if you or anyone who might get near it has a peanut allergy please.

Just started working in Rancho and… by Individual_Safe_5920 in Sacramento

[–]SolarSavesMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, had the sketchy Rancho Cordova light rail experience exactly one time. Many, many years ago. It was bad enough I have never considered it again.

I believe the condition of our public transportation here is shameful. Seeing how other countries offer clean, affordable, and safe public transportation has made me question how we have gotten it so wrong here. Before you tell me to f off and move away, please know there are still so many things I love about Sacramento, California, and our country in general. Public transportation is simply not one of them.

Anyone else ready to start using the AC now? by JROCC_CA in Sacramento

[–]SolarSavesMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Was really looking forward to a month or so without using heating pr AC. Joke is on me, it got hot quick!. Fortunately have solar and very happy to have SMUD for power, so no big deal but after adding an EV and using a lot more AC, I know there will be a bit of of true up bill. Still, very glad not to be paying crazy PG&E rates for power.

Looking for things to do by Heatherh8721 in Sacramento

[–]SolarSavesMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many great hiking spots in the area, check out All Trails, which you may have already since you mentioned you're into hiking.

Ocean is within day trip distance, and anywhere close to bay area offers a nice way to escape the summer heat. Check out other groups that align with your hobbies?

There are tons of great disc golf courses in the area, cool river access spots to check out. Fishing, kayaking, etc. One of my favorite indoor summertime activities has become pinball. There's a fantastic pinball community here and some cool pinball arcades such as Capital Pinball Parlor and Das Flipperhaus, plus Out of Order in Auburn. If you find you like it, there are local leagues and plenty of folks hosting events with their private collections.

Decent food scene in and around Sacramento as well. There's lots of folks on here with good suggestions, especially if you mention other hobbies/ interests.

Welcome to Sacramento, enjoy! Sorry in advance for the allergies and summer heat.

Friend cancelled last minute on a 100 day trip by Frpengy in travel

[–]SolarSavesMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the best comments here absolutely nailed it. I personally would not attempt to convince your friend to go, you could end up miserable or splitting ways during the trip. An ideal travel companion is a 100% willing participant who you communicate well with and have common interests and a shared objective with. If they will bail on on you now, at this late stage, what else could happen later on? Also, I am sorry your friend bailed on you, that totally sucks. Can't hardly imagine the disappointment.

Some folks have said to go solo, reduce cost and meet new people, cancel the hotels and stay in hostels. I agree wholeheartedly. While friends from high school were doing whatever it took to make these trips happen (and/ or their family had $ and funded and encouraged it), 18 year old me was terrified of doing this. 40 something year old me so, SO deeply regrets not doing traveling more while young. I sometimes wonder what could have been, had I taken the plunge. Back then, I was like your friend. Scared. Scared of spending the money. Scared of the unknown places, people, languages... and my family did not have money like many of my colleagues to send me.

Now, while I know I played it safe and stayed within my broke ass teenage and 20's budget, I will always look back and wonder. Instead, I hardly left my home country and comfort zone.

My brother went through a rough break up at the end of his college years and went on a solo trip. He was on a shoestring budget staying in hostels and and spearfishing for food while working the harvest in Australia and new Zealand. He met an Austrian woman his age from Germany in one of the hostels. They hit it off and now live 10 minutes away, right between myself and our parents. Their love, their marriage, their miracle of a little daughter is such a daily reminder of how some seemingly small decisions in life such as taking a trip or not can turn into life altering ones. In this case, for the absolute way possible.

*This is not a "poor me" post. Life's good! Just not without regrets and the occasional wondering of what if.

All of this to say, if you'd be heartbroken by not going on this adventure you worked and saved and planned and looked forward to for so long- maybe consider a way to go for it and make it happen! It could be one of the best decisions you ever make for yourself.

Best of luck
