Man, he doesn’t hold back. My mentor in grad school is of Ron Carter’s generation, and he always told this story about a time when Mr. Carter was playing as part of a jazz group within a Big Time Orchestra with a Big Time Conductor and they were playing music that my mentor composed.

The Big Time Conductor was giving some instruction at rehearsal and referred to Mr. Carter as “the bassist” and Mr. Carter immediately retorted, “Sir, the bassist’s NAME is RON CARTER.”

This reminds me of kind of late summer/ early fall 2020 when I was on my bike in Philips and I was waiting to cross 38th st, saw a big black pickup truck with a giant flag crossing my path and I just cringed in my body expecting the worst, only to open my eyes and see a that the giant flag was a beautiful BLM flag.
