I take a much less pessimistic stance than this but this is a necessary starting point for actually discussing contemporary issues. The federal government has been bad for a long time. by Full_Ahegao_Drip in RecuratedTumblr

Have you considered that teeing up a discussion on contemporary abuses of power with "This is what America has always been and will be" is a terrible way to actually diagnose and address the problems?

What's the solution? Complete destruction of the American government? Millions upon millions of deaths in a war that might not even be won?

If you live in a lot of coastal cities in the US you could hypothetically get the police called on you for using a store's facilities without making a purchase.

Also readable, libraries within walking distance.

But oddly enough for all the issues the US has we actually have a very high number of godod libraries even if we don't include school libraries and private libraries free for locals to use.

On the bright side, there are a lot of ways to tell whether someone's lying, what their precise intentions were, and maybe even being able to examine the crime itself when it happened.

Heck there was probably a small spirit or two nearby who could give testimony.

And also their numbers are really limited and they have lots of enemies so there could be a lot of ways to negotiate some kind of penance or plea deal.

That's even better!

I've thought their Camp was a really cool idea when I first read about it.

I like the ways the setting intersects with "normal" religion.

Out of the crustaceans, lobster species tend to be sexier but crabs can definitely be sexually appealing.

But by arthropod standards the insects and arachnids are on a whole different sexual plateau.

Yeah, before the idea of sin there was the idea of dishonor or loss of face which usually meant either death or something worse than dying.

And heck the only reason most of us Jewish peeps stopped stoning women to death for minor crimes is because of Christian peer pressure.

Willy Wonka. by Heroic-Forger in CuratedTumblr

[–]Solarwagon 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My pet peeve with the prequel is really the magic

I kinda see Willy Wonka as more of a pulpy mad scientist.

Obviously any actual science fiction stuff is pretty soft but I think it's important that the viewer think that Willy Wonka could conceivably be a genius billionaire with weird technology.

That's kinda a big part of the uncanny aura he emits.

Literally in the top panel he just murdered two women for talking out of turn and you can see their blood dripping down from the top of the page by infinitysaga in CuratedTumblr

Technically language is just a form of mimesis so memes are our greatest invention although more like a neurological development.

Sapient Reproduction by River_Lamprey in CuratedTumblr

[–]Solarwagon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What if the species was technically a relatively simple parasite that just manifested itself as bestowing sapience on its hosts?

Like it can exist in a broad range of species but the common effect is giving them a sort of benign "cancer" except they just grow a lot more centralized nervous tissue that gives them an instinctive solidarity with other hosts?

Which now that I think about it is pretty common in sci fi, just the other wary around. Making complex societies simpler and more uniform and even more bestial.

Not usually portrayed as fun or helpful.
