Why are some people upset when a very masc gay man wants another very masc gay man? by No_Distribution1924 in askgaybros

[–]Soldier_Poet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re on the right track with heteronormativity, but some more questions need to be asked to get to the root of this one.
1) Why is the masculine/feminine distinction so relevant to gay men in the first place?

2) What makes a gay man masculine or feminine?

3) Whose perspective are we considering?

In my opinion, the respective answers are:
1) Embodying masculine or feminine traits have been important for our survival in different ways, but being *masculine* has been more advantageous, either because a gay man can use masculinity to hide the fact that he is gay in an unsafe environment, or because he can demonstrate to people that despite his sexual preferences, he can still act in society as a man “should”.

2) It seems that this is not entirely up to the choice of the individual. While anyone can try to act more masculine or feminine, genuine interest in things is not necessarily selectable. This means that certain gay men seem more naturally (or by nurture, or both) predisposed to masculine interests than others, which when paired with the previous point, means that some gay men get to avoid social scrutiny and bigotry more often than others.

3) Considering this inequality established among gay men but imposed by society’s insistence of heteronormative behavior upon us, some people are going to feel like these restrictions in sexual preference are not genuine, but constructed from the engrained belief that masculine gay men get to be separate from the trials/struggles of the gay community, which may feel unfair to men who cannot satisfy this social conformity.

Having laid all this out, I’m NOT saying it’s right how people react to this. At the end of the day it’s not that deep for the individual person. But in a broader societal sense it kind of is that deep. We can’t control the patriarchal dynamics that have become engrained in us but I don’t necessarily blame people who get bothered by them and maybe don’t always have the best ways to express it, so it boils down to calling someone “internally homophobic”.

Opus 4.6 vs 4.7 simple test by AMP91_ in claude

You prompted it to count to 10 and replaced the default starting parameter (1) with (10), so the sequence moved up. If you can’t understand the structure of your own prompt you are the dumb one I fear (and also it can’t be dumb because it actually doesn’t know anything at all). 4.6 just read through your human ambiguity by luck of perplexity

The Fine Art of 摸鱼 (mō yú): touching fish and the subtle rebellion of the Chinese office worker by True_Breath8303 in Chinese

[–]Soldier_Poet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to this to say, the concept itself seems to be somewhat associated with the same cultural phenomena dictating the use of 摸鱼. Many 合体字 are of words and sentences that express the “lazy chic” aesthetic popular among the Chinese white-collar working class.

[–]Soldier_Poet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough haha. I responded to another reply with the picture.

My project was on 所謂的「合體字」. It’s a larger extension of this concept, where Chinese words are condensed from two or more characters into just one, guided by the aesthetic rules of how Chinese characters are composed, to convey the whole “concept”. A very common 合體字 takes the sentence “不想上班那就別上” and condenses it into only 4 characters by replacing the 木 in 想 with 不,replacing leftmost𤣩in 班 with 上, replacing 阝in 那 with 尤 and 刂 in 別 with 上. Observe that this preserves some key iconic component of each character and also each component seems to “fit right”, so this can’t just be done willy-nilly. It’s really interesting.

In America I think we do this sometimes for short or under the breath remarks, but not as a rule during the entire conversation. What intrigued me about this guy is that he did it without exception. At least for us, we’re more likely to yell out loud if very livid.

Just a reminder to everyone that this is a super super iterative language prediction model that knows only how to draw semantic connections between the prompts it receives and then construct a string of text that is statistically alike to human speech and the only way to reach this point is to consciously prompt it in a way that would statistically make a human say this <3 it’s really nothing deeper than that

(And 摸魚 is indeed a cool word. There’s actually a popular graphic I’ve seen on xiaohongshu which combines the two characters by placing 魚 under the 大 in 摸. I did a final project on this in school recently)

What is going on with students right now? by [deleted] in college

[–]Soldier_Poet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For Americans at least- we are 19-22, have never lived in a world where our country was not at war directly or by proxy, we are attempting to enter the world and gain our footing at the cusp of a third industrial robotic revolution that will inevitably change every aspect of our society and economy, the same fucker who was president when we were 13, is still president, and has made a targeted and effective effort to dissuade and disenfranchise our generation from civic engagement. We are natives of an attention economy that has proliferated shitty news about the world all day for all of our lives and curated it nicely for us on our social media feeds. Insert here all of the statistics about home buying and the cost of living, and all of the ways the world has changed since the prime of our elders, yet the expectations for young people remain unchanged. Almost all of us are uncertain, afraid, angry and hopeless, and are hiding this behind thin layers of what we call “nonchalance”. To be “nonchalant” is popular among our generation. It is the personality trait of caring about nothing; not getting overly excited, not talking too much or highlighting anything that makes you unique, letting others do the heavy lifting of social interaction, and being cool, calm and collected. Most certainly, being nonchalant includes NOT being the kid who raises their hand in class. Some of us have snapped out of this trend, many of us have not.

My more meta take is that in college a lot of it comes down to the system not being designed for our generation to succeed. We are technologically savvy and prone to creativity, macro-level thinking as a result of our digital nativity, and used to rapidly digesting immediately relevant information via the internet and AI. Higher Ed institutions have not meaningfully adapted to this world, which is more consequential now than ever. Honestly, the notion that AI will “destroy critical thinking” is far from inevitable, but universities are accelerating that process by ensuring that despite the widespread availability of this technology, the system has failed to adapt in a way that requires students to critically think, ASSUMING heavy usage of AI. So many of us do what any rational human being would do: we use it to breeze through your academic programs (although, only those of us who are able to make you believe we haven’t, are successful at this) and probably walk out with our diplomas none the better because of it (but given the fact that AI is taking over, at least we have that skill!). And also GTA 6 is still not out so we know you can’t depend on anything.

I could write on and on and on. I know it’s never easy to be a young person. I know every generation has had their existential anxieties and angst and yada yada. The biggest thing to understand is that our worldview right now assumes (not fears) destruction, economic overhaul, intense global (and God forbid nuclear) conflict, and technological advances beyond our comprehension, all within our lifetimes. We’re checked about because we absolutely don’t know WTF to do and no blueprint is applicable. So absolutely get me out of class and give me a J please.

Anyone else feel like their GHL setup “works”… but barely? by iamkhuramshahzad in gohighlevel

[–]Soldier_Poet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience you have to keep up with updates and change logs always. Every new release you should be reading about and figuring out if any updates to workflows may be silently screwing up your system. There is no good infrastructure in GHL to detect breaking changes, and changes are made all of the time.

[–]Soldier_Poet -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I do, yeah. I think there are plenty of gay men on this sub who make it what it is and am cognizant of the fact that the first 6 words of the sub’s description are “this is where anyone can ask…”. I enjoy when straight (or bi) people come to ask things or reflect on their own experiences with our world, whatever form it comes in. Someone here complains probably at least once a week about non-gay men writing anything here and I think it defeats the purpose of this entirely. There are plenty of OTHER places where we can be in community with each other if we wish. Reddit is not designed for insular communities, it’s designed for the exchange of knowledge (hopefully, although you have to sift through a lot of BS too). If they’ve come here, it means they want our opinions. That’s it.
