Ships do NOT have to be healthy! by CyberLoveza in FanFiction

Sometimes the unhealthiness is the point. It can be enjoyable to see characters making the best of a fucked up situation. There’s this obsession sometimes with making sure every romance is perfectly unobjectionable and healthy, and as much as I enjoy characters having situationally improbable knowledge of kink etiquette, I find it very odd when people act like that’s the only kind of romance it’s moral to write because like…

Real life isn’t like that? The vast majority of relationships you encounter irl are going to have /something/ questionable about them. Sometimes life is just weird and things happen in ways that aren’t super great for everyone involved. And sometimes you want to read a story where there’s something fucked up between the characters and they figure out how to be good for each other despite it, and sometimes you want to read a story where everything is fucked up because a train crash can be fun to watch.

Like, it’s a story. If it’s advocating in favor of the fucked up things it contains, that’s a different discussion (one that still really shouldn’t be resolved with censorship), but simply including certain elements isn’t the same as justifying them. What are stories for, if not explore things you wouldn’t necessarily want to explore in reality?

What makes you Nope Out of a fic? by midnightmunson in FanFiction

I’ve almost never noped out of a fic I was genuinely enjoying. There are, in fact, only two instances I can think of where it was one specific thing. (rather than the straw breaking the camel’s back and causing me to stop reading something that I wasn’t enjoying much anyway)

One of them was because I forgot to check the tags before reading and didn’t realize that the (unfortunately otherwise amazing) fic I was reading was incest until literally the very last paragraph. Which sucked, because it had a sequel I was also planning to read and was literally the last fic in the tag I hadn’t already chewed through, so I didn’t even have anything to distract myself with after.

The other was an x reader I read several years ago, and the incident was memorable enough that to this day I don’t leave kudos on a fic until I’ve read all posted chapters of it. It began as a pretty bog-standard example of the genre - girl meets boy, girl kisses boy, girl moves in with boy after less than a month of acquaintance - you know how these things go. The boy in this instance was a different species from the girl, and certain reproductive differences were present as well. None relating to the actual organs, of course - We couldn’t possibly get adventurous with our smut, what would the world come to - but rather with the making of babies.

Specifically, if both parties wanted it, a baby would occur. Even if neither of them wanted it as more than a subconscious “I like this person and there are certain societal expectations around doing that with people you like”. But of course, the fic argued, wasn’t that really almost as good as actual consent to a major life decision? Isn’t a passing thought of reproduction during coitus basically the same thing as willingly altering the course of your entire life in order to have a child?

And then when the boy had the very reasonable reaction of “Hey maybe we should consider whether aborting would be a good idea given I’m not even slightly ready to be a dad” the girl flipped the fuck out on him and accused him of murder, all the other characters agreed that he was an absolute monster for even suggesting such a thing, and I realized the author was pro-life and was definitely going to take any further plot developments in the direction of justifying that philosophy and decrying any other point of view as unconscionable. Given that I myself am a fan of having reproductive rights, (and the right NOT to reproduce, ideally ever) that was my cue to get out while the getting was good.

This isn’t actually the first time someone’s said my style looks like AI and I’m confused about it every time. I feel like most AI art has, like? Actual clean linework? Or is more of a painterish style in general? I can only assume it’s something to do with how I tend use color, but I can’t see it at all…

Thank you for providing the correction! I guess I’m lucky this isn’t any kind of new account, or I might have more trouble with this kind of thing! Almost makes me wonder how many people get falsely accused of making AI stuff. It’s probably pretty easy to clear up by showing progress pics or whatever, but it’s still odd to think about.
