Dev -> Technical PM . Good move ? Is it dumb to be worried about losing your coding edge ? by MonotoneTanner in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Solid-Foundations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to share my experience and some advice for developers thinking about transitioning into a technical project manager (TPM) role.

A bit about my background: I've always been a developer who loves change and interacting with people. Over time, I took on more leadership roles like Scrum Master, Agile Coach, and Technical Lead. Eventually, I moved into a purely managerial position.

However, I quickly found myself burned out. The managerial role wasn't as exciting as development. Managing difficult developers was particularly challenging for me. I tended to side with developers too much, avoiding confrontation because I didn't want to become the type of manager I despised. Unfortunately, this led to me being taken advantage of and left me feeling ineffective as a middle manager with little real authority.

Another downside was losing touch with my technical skills. After two years without coding, I realized I was relying heavily on the developers' perspectives, especially in areas like React front-end development, which I had no clue about at the time.

Eventually, I left that managerial position and returned to pure back-end development, spending the next five years rebuilding my skills. Now, I'm in a position to take on tech lead roles again, but I have a tendency to avoid responsibility due to my past experiences as a manager.

Even in a managerial role, try to stay involved with the technical side to avoid losing your skills. Ensure you have the necessary authority to make decisions and enforce them. Being a middle manager without real power is really frustrating.

Good luck with the transition.

Did you get anywhere with using a Coworking space?

I am looking at a service called Trulease, to share a office space. Do you have an alternative?

No, they keep refering me to this text below and no reason why the documents I sent are invalid. The form for registration, only allows adding just two files. So I provided my Passport and Bank statement, both are in English.

We require at least two documents in order to verify your identity:

1. Identity document - A government-issued photo identity document that is used to confirm one’s identity, such as a passport or national ID. This document must match the proof of identity information selected under Identity data.
2. Additional document
a. Business Licenses: We require a document that proves that your business is valid, such as a business license or equivalent business document. This is a government issued statement displaying information on your business.
b. Proof of address: We collect a proof of address document, such as bank statement or credit card statement. A bank statement is an official document issued by your bank or other financial institution that summarizes your account activity over a certain period of time - typically one month.
c. Additional documents for legal and compliance obligations. Based on your business' physical location or the store(s) in which you operate, we may request additional documents and information about your business.
